Flamengo offer West Ham deal to take Tevez and Mascherano Jon Brodkin and Matt Scott Wednesday November 15, 2006 The Guardian The Brazilian club Flamengo are keen to bring West Ham's Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano back to South America. The Argentina internationals moved to Upton Park from Corinthians in August but have failed to hold down regular places, and Flamengo plan to discuss a possible transfer with Kia Joorabchian, the businessman who was instrumental in bringing the players to the England and effectively controls their futures. Sources at West Ham insist Tevez and Mascherano have no interest in returning to South America, but Flamengo will propose a loan move in January for six months, principally to strengthen their Libertadores Cup campaign. A Flamengo delegation is in London, though discussions about Tevez and Mascherano are not the major reason and the club are not confident of a deal.
The trip is understood to have been arranged to try to arrange transfer business not involving Premiership clubs and search for investment. That is another subject Flamengo wish to discuss with Joorabchian, who looks unlikely to end up controlling West Ham. He leads a consortium involving the Israeli Eli Papouchado but a rival bid led by the president of the Football Association of Iceland, Eggert Magnusson, is in pole position. Alan Pardew was yesterday assured of his job security should Magnusson's £75m takeover of West Ham be successful. The Icelander, a Uefa executive committee member, is in the advanced stages of due diligence and hopes to take control of the club this week or next. Pardew retains the support of fans and Magnusson has recognised the manager's contribution in transforming the Upton Park club from a Championship side to last season's FA Cup finalists. Magnusson has already committed to working with Pardew, who has been under pressure after a poor start to the season, and providing money for new signings in the January transfer window if the takeover goes ahead. The Icelandic consortium's team are inspecting the east London club's accounts and a formal offer is expected to be made within a week and perhaps as soon as Friday. After being rebuffed by West Ham's chairman Terry Brown initially, the Magnusson-led bid appears to have surged far ahead of Joorabchian's consortium. It also went through the due diligence process and had meetings with Brown and Pardew, but an offer has not materialised. Brown now seems to be keener on Magnusson, who was given a guided tour of Upton Park this week. The billionaire financier Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson, chairman of the Icelandic bank Landsbanki, is supporting Magnusson's offer for the Premiership club. Magnusson, who along with other members of the consortium is also putting up some of the money, met the West Ham chairman Brown last week and indicated he would be prepared to offer £75m, with the bulk coming from equity rather than borrowing, and would also be prepared to take on £22.5m debt. In Scotland, Hearts have replaced their caretaker manager Eduard Malofeev with the Kaunas head coach, Eugenijus Riabovas.
