One step closer to the target
Atletico travel to Sevilla with a 2-1 lead after tonight • Diego Costa scored twice from the spot
The Atletico players gave their all in the cup classic. Accompanied by their fans, who had answered the call of Mono Burgos, Simeone’s men looked for the ball from the start. Sevilla arrived and shoed a different side to the one that conceded four in league goals, but they came out with the second leg very much on his mind.
The intensity and pressure in the opening stages were there for all to see and both sides showed their attacking intent, with the first attempt of the game falling to Koke who shot straight at the keeper, the not long later, Adrian did well to get in front of his man but blazed his shot over the bar.
Sevilla hit back and Negredo tried a speculative effort from 35 yards and almost caught out Courtois. The long distance shot looked to be dipping under the bar but the Belgian keeper acrobatically tipped it over.
Soon after the most clear cut chance of the game came, Diego Costaa was set through on goal after a perfect pass from Mario. As the Brazilian closed in on the goal, the keeper was quick off his line to narrow the angles, forcing him to shoot wide. It was the last chance of the first half and the sides went in all square.
Not long after the break the tie burst in to life Spahic handled the ball in the area and the referee pointed straight to the spot. He also gave out the maximum punishment, showing the Bosnian defender his second yellow card of the march, reducing Sevilla to 10 men. Diego Costa had the responsibility from 12 yards out and made no mistake, sending the keeper the wrong way and guiding the ball in to the bottom right hand corner.
In the 56th minute, the referee was pointing to the spot again, and was also brandishing another red card. This time it was Diego Godin who was adjudged to have handled in the area and the penalty awarded to the visitor who has an opportunity to level things up. Alvaro Negredo step up sent the keeper the wrong way to make it 1-1.
This turned out to be a night of spot kicks when in the 71st minute, Sevilla defender Rakitic stopped the ball with his hand inside the penalty area giving Diego Costa another opportunity to score from the spot. Again the Brazilian went to the keeper right, this time Beto guessed correctly but the power and precision of the strike was too much for the keeper and Atleti took a 2-1 lead in to the final stages.
The Atleti fans were enjoying the final minutes as the side marched tovictory, but there was a further sting in the tail. As Costa raced through on goals he was hacked down by Fernando Navarro stopped who was given a straight red card for the tackle, leaving his side to play out the final minutes with just 9 men. Atleti were unable to convert the free kick and the game ended 2-1 with the remaining 90 minutes to be played in the Sanchez Pizjuan on the 28th of February.
