Simeone: "I know we can give much more than they're giving"
"The most important game is the Racing game and we must play as if it were our last"
Diego Pablo Simeone appeared before the media in midweek, three days before playing the game against Racing Santander. The coach talked about all the issues related to the team, both the suspension of Miranda, as well as Godin's injury and, of course, the important game on Saturday against Racing in El Sardinero.
To begin, he spoke of the possibilities in defense. "Miranda is suspended and Diego is evolving very well. The expectations are good that he’ll be available for Saturday's game. We are working very hard with Luis and Alvaro who knows that position very well. So the squad is well protected.”
Regarding the rival of the day, Racing, who are sat in the relegation zone, Simeone said that "one has to play the moments and look beyond the numbers. Racing have players like Munitis up front who’re fast, as well as players like Lautaro Acosta who work the ball very well."
As to whether this team could be on par with the Atletico of 96 in his playing days, Simeone said "I’m not looking for comparisons. Each team has its essence and its forms and players are not equal. The team is growing and I know we can give much more than we're giving.”
Asked about Dominguez, he said that he "it is a major player". With regards the players not playing so many minutes, the coach said: "The importance is the quality of minutes played by players, not quantity. In an important team like Atletico Madrid it is important the quality of the minutes with the players, not quantity. Silvio is still working and looking his best, Dominguez, Perea, Mario and Assuncao hopefully await their moment when they’re called upon."
Another issue that was discussed with the technician was the yellow cards due to the aggressiveness increasing the risk of missing an important game, like Barcelona. "For me the most important game is the Racing de Santander, because it is what comes now. Against Barcelona, Real Madrid, against any opponent you get three points. No game is more important than the other. The most important is approaching each game as if it’s your last. From there, we will look at the next game and who it is.” |
