APPIANO GENTILE - Words from Diego Milito two days before the UEFA Champions League match against Olympique Marseille, scheduled for Tuesday 13 March at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in Milan.

inter.it offers the full version of the statements made by the Argentine forward from this exclusive Sky Sport Italia interview conducted by Andrea Paventi.

Milito, Inter's new season restarted entirely from that second half against Catania. Or is it still too early to make these assessments?

"We hope that that second half represents a restart, which I also said after the game. In that game we showed courage and pride, which allowed us to feel alive. We were losing 2-0 after the first half and found the equaliser. As I said, the team showed great pride. Then came the victory against Chievo, which gives us more peace and more confidence."

Actually against Chievo we saw a different Inter. Was something really triggered in a negative period?

"Yes, it's a negative moment and we, as I said before, we very much want to try and reverse this situation. We talked among ourselves. We're trying to give our all and, fortunately, we played a great game in Verona and we won a tough challenge. I think this is important for our confidence in the future."

There has been a lot of talk about that speech by Julio Cesar between the first and second half of the match against Catania. Was it something that surprised you?

"No, it didn't surprise us. Julio can talk, just as anyone else can; we're a team, a group that's always united. At that moment he was sincere and he felt he had to speak up and say something to his team-mates. We all took it very well and right then he gave us a big hand. Then, fortunately, we drew. We're relaxed and hoping to overturn the result in this match against Marseille so we can get to the quarter-finals of the Champions League."

What was, in your opinion, the most important thing that Julio Cesar said at that moment?

"He was clear. He told us we had to return to the pitch and try to turn things around because we could not allow a defeat in our house. He said that we all had to give more from the start to the end. Then we took to the pitch and we were united until the end. We also had a bit of luck, and by bringing out a bit of courage we drew."

Is it a coincidence that you played a leading role in the run of wins around the Christmas break, and now you're scoring again with Inter recovering? Is there a bit of 'Milito dependence'?

"No, I honestly don't think so. We are a group and when we got seven wins in a row we achieved it together. I don't believe there's a Milito dependence."

You're very close to Esteban Cambiasso and Javier Zanetti. Can you tell us how much they've suffered in this period of the season? Did you say anything in particular to them?

"There's no need to say anything to them, as they're two very experienced players. They suffer from the situation like we all suffer. Actually they suffer in particular. Perhaps they suffered a bit more in this recent period, but they're experienced players with extraordinary careers that help them to overcome certain moments. Obviously they're not happy when things that aren't true are said, and those who know them know that they always put themselves on the line. They're the first to take to the pitch for training and they're important players for Inter who have given so much to this club."

Did you notice that in Verona when you scored the assist came from Zanetti and the first team-mate to celebrate with you was Cambiasso?

"Beyond all that, those two are my friends. Obviously I'm happy if I score. I looked for Pupi most of all because he had served me an excellent cross."

What significance did Claudio Ranieri's tears have for the team?

"A lot. Honestly I found out about it later because on the pitch I didn't notice. It's part of the moment; a release for a man who is trying to turn the situation around that we're all suffering from, and he did it together with us. It seems to me that it can be something normal, although frankly it surprised me a bit. But we are all with him. We're all in the same boat and we'll try to do our all to get out of this situation."

Have the players also felt weighed down by the burden recently?

"It's always difficult when you're unable to win games: the pressure and the anxiety to win at all costs start to build up. Fortunately we got the win last Friday and it was needed. It has brought us a lot of calm and it also gives us an injection of confidence for the game against Marseille."

Was there a time when you thought you perhaps needed something to shake you up? Or do you have to shake yourselves up in situations like these?

"No, the only way to shake things up is to train hard every day and improve constantly. The coach said as much when we spoke about it and, let's be honest, we've also had our fair share of bad luck. That's just what we did; we knew we'd start winning again. It was a very good win against Chievo and we played well too. We're happy and we hope to achieve many more important victories."

Is it still realistic to talk about third place in the league?

"Honestly, at the moment we must think about one game at a time. We know that third place is a long way away, although we do really want it and it would be hugely important for us. Obviously it's also an important target for the club, but as I said we must take each game as it comes. We have a massively important match against Marseille coming up and we're hoping to turn the tie around and go through. Then we'll concentrate on winning our games every Sunday. Further down the line we'll see where we might end up."

Is there a sort of pact within the dressing room? Like, we're even more united now than before...

"Actually we've always been united. We've never disbanded, not even during the times of difficulty. We've always tried to maintain a group mentality. This is a great group and we've shown it so many times, including the present moment. There's no pact, we simply always try to give 100%: sometimes you manage it and sometimes you don't. But the team is always behind the coach and we always give everything to win games."

You've had a very special relationship with president Massimo Moratti: what's he been like recently?

"Obviously a bit down - like all of us - because of the period. He is a huge fan. We've all spoken together and he has always shown complete faith in us. We also try to give our all for him, because he deserves it. He's a fantastic president and we want to give him lots more reasons to be happy."

Do you still believe that, if you beat Olympique Marseille, you can have a great season in the Champions League?

"We're sure we can. Of course the Champions League is a different sort of competition. If we get through this round we'll be among the top eight teams in Europe. Tuesday's match is massive and we're desperate to do well. And we'd then have everything to play for – this team has already shown it's capable of going all the way."

If you could say so now, why will Inter beat Olympique Marseille?

"We're convinced we can overturn the result. We played very well in the first leg and didn't deserve to lose. We're sure that we can win with the help of our fans."

MILAN - It happened in the Velodrome and it was the same story in the Stadio Meazza: everything was decided in the last minutes and, once again, it didn't go Inter's way. Nerazzurri hopes were raised after Milito's goal but Brandao brought them back down to earth and Pazzini's late penalty made no difference to the result. The final score was 2-1 in the second leg between Inter and Olympique Marseille and saw Inter bow out of the Champions League.

FIRST HALF – To face this Marseille side, Ranieri decided to field the same team that beat Chievo Verona in their last league match. Pazzini and Cambiasso started the game on the bench.

The Stadio Meazza was packed with fans who were willing the Nerazzurri through following their one-goal disadvantage from the first leg. Valbuena was the first to try a shot on goal which Julio Cesar dealt with easily after 2 minutes, but Inter came closer after Sneijder won back a ball: Poli picked out Zanetti, who managed to get into the box and cut back for Sneijder. The Dutchman shot but Mandanda managed to get his body in the way and the French defence were able to clear on 8 minutes. Inter were showing they were in control as Sneijder threaded the ball though to Milito, who after chesting the ball down saw his shot blocked by an on-form Mandanda in the 11th minute. Azpilicueta crossed but the header was narrowly wide of Julio Cesar's right post and that was the French team's response on 19 minutes, while Inter disappeared until the 34th minute when a deep ball picked out Forlan, who in turn looked for Milito, but the Argentine was beaten to the ball by Diawara. Remy blasted from outside the box on 38 minutes, Julio Cesar was about to intercept, but the ball went out. Sneijder was fouled about 30 yards out and Inter were awarded a free-kick: Sneijder took it but it went straight into Mandanda's arms. Maicon found Forlan's head with a cross which the Uruguayan sent wide in first-half stoppage time.

Proenca blew for half-time after 47 minutes and the teams headed for the changing rooms with the score even at 0-0.

SECOND HALF – The second half began with the same twenty-two players on the pitch. Marseille pressed forward, Inter reacted logically, but wasted a chance in the 54th minute when Sneijder picked up a bad clearance from Valbuena and finding himself free on the left wing missed a great chance when his cross was intercepted. Sneijder asked to come off and Ranieri chose Obi to replace him, while he sent on Pazzini for Forlan in the 58th minute. The changes brought new energy and ideas to Inter's game. Obi managed to get crosses into the box, Pazzo won back the ball and headed for goal, Inter looked for spaces but the French were giving nothing away. In the 67th minute Diawara fouled Poli on the edge of the penalty area: this proved to be a great opportunity for Stankovic, but his right-foot shot just wouldn't dip under the crossbar. Valbuena crossed after 71 minutes, Diarra met it and Julio Cesar did well to put the ball wide for a corner. And it was a corner that led to Inter's first goal: Cambiasso took it, just after coming on and Milito gave the Nerazzurri the lead: there was a scramble in the box, Samuel managed to find Pazzini, Morel blocked at full stretch, but the Argentine striker was there ready to tap in. 1-0 to Inter. Pazzini fought away and won a free kick after a foul by Diawara in the 84th minute: Maicon tried to find the back of the net, but Mandanda pushed the ball away for a corner which the Colossus took. Lucio was there, the Brazilian was waiting and found Cambiasso with a touch of brilliance, who was able to rise above the defence but sent the ball over the bar by inches. In the 2nd minute of added time the Stadio Meazza was silenced. Brandao went past Samuel and, finding himself with only Julio Cesar to beat, slipped the ball between the keeper and the post with his left. At the other end of the pitch, Pazzini was brought down by Mandanda, the keeper was sent off and the Nerazzurri were awarded a penalty. Pazzo took it and scored. Unfortunately it didn't count for anything: Inter are out of the Champions League.

MILAN - "Unfortunately tonight's win wasn't enough to put us through. We're sorry, we're really sorry because it was a hard-fought match. We really wanted to go through: we were up against an excellent Marseille side but we created plenty of goal-scoring opportunities. After we went 1-0 up it was all to play for. We tried as hard as we could to get the second but then came their equaliser, and in all honesty I don't think our team deserved it." A disappointed Javier Zanetti commented to Inter Channel about the game that saw Inter knocked out of the Champions League after two legs against Marseille.

The captain continued: "In both games it all happened at the end. Tonight in particular we were penalised excessively but we have to lift ourselves now and we should start by saying thanks to our fans, who have got behind us in every game. The fans are sad at the moment, just as we are, because we all wanted to progress in the Champions League. It's been a complicated season, difficult right from the beginning, but we'll try to end it as best we can. We must focus on the league now and do everything we can to finish near the top. It won't be easy because this is a tough blow to take, but we'll try. We're duty-bound to try and climb as high as we can and aim for third place. We know we have lots of teams in front of us but we must go for it."

JULIO CESAR 6 – Impegnato, ma nemmeno troppo, dal tiro a freddo di Valbuena, poi nessun pericolo evidente, fino al minuto 71, quando è grandissimo a deviare la palla velenosa di Diarra di testa. Fino all'ennesimo rasoterra traditore...

MAICON 5 – Brivido quando si fa anticipare da Remy, sul quale poi si disimpegna con grande fatica. L’unico cross vero arriva nel finale di primo tempo a servire Forlan. Ma in generale dovrebbe fare di più. E quanti cambi di fronte fa andare in fumo…  Nei minuti finali prova a ruggire: a momenti non pesca il jolly da calcio di punizione.

SAMUEL 6 – Prova sin da subito a tenere a bada con le maniere spicce l’ariete Remy. Sostanzialmente pochi problemi, anche se lui potrebbe essere più reattivo su Brandao: paga il mancato intervento di Lucio.

LUCIO 4,5 – Molto mestiere, discreta sicurezza, qualche rischio. Tutto in maniera regolare fino al recupero, quando si fa uccellare da Brandao, nullo nella gara di andata, che condanna l’Inter all’eliminazione.

NAGATOMO 5,5 – E’ sulla sua fascia che il Marsiglia bussa maggiormente mettendolo a tratti in ansia.  L’arbitro non gli perdona praticamente nulla, né in difesa né in attacco. Lui comunque si batte come un leone su ogni pallone, anche se non sempre ha la lucidità giusta.

ZANETTI 6 – Dal suo primo affondo nasce l’azione pericolosissima non concretizzata da Sneijder.  Grandissimo intervento in chiusura su Ayew (che poi si produce in una sceneggiata davvero assurda) , quando parte lancia in resta il Meazza si infiamma. Solo che progressivamente il suo apporto viene meno.

STANKOVIC 5,5 – Innesca lui l’azione con la quale Milito si ritroverà a tu per tu con Mandanda. Molto interessante anche il pallone che manda in area Forlan. Sprazzi in una gara non brillantissima, dove nemmeno al momento di calciare in porta riesce a dare il massimo.

POLI 6 – Corre con puntualità a dare una mano al compagno Nagatomo. A volte un po’ palleggiato dall’asse Azpilicueta-Amalfitano, riesce però a sbrogliare qualche situazione pesante. Prova anche una conclusione in porta nella ripresa e si guadagna anche una bella punizione che Stankovic manda alta. A lui non si può proprio  DAL 74’ CAMBIASSO 6 – In panchina, sbraita e si dimena, facendo capire di avere troppa voglia di giocare. Ha una occasione clamorosa da assist di Lucio, ma viene fermato tutto per off-side.

SNEIJDER 6 – Incredibile la palla che gli capita tra i piedi dopo sette minuti: solo un colpo di reni di Mandanda gli nega la rete. Inizio carico, poi si perde un po’. Una sua punizione viene bloccata facilmente da Mandanda. Il tutto fino alla sostituzione accolta a suon di fischi. Anche se il giocatore accusa un problema all’adduttore. DAL 58’ OBI 6 – Porta freschezza e soprattutto tanto dinamismo sulla sinistra.

MILITO 6,5 – Anche il Principe si ritrova ad esaltare i riflessi di Mandanda che gli nega il gol da colpo di petto ravvicinato. Capisce che può mettere in difficoltà i marcatori e li insidia costringendoli al fallo sistematico. Almeno fino a quando gli vengono prese le misure e non riesce più a pungere. Ma lo squalo quando sente odore di sangue azzanna e basta: e questo succede quando l’argentino risolve l’incredibile batti e ribatti in area trovando la rete dell’1-0.

Ci prova da posizione difficile nel finale della prima frazione. Colleziona però troppi passaggi sbagliati. DAL 58’ PAZZINI 6,5 – Parte come un leone, strappando palloni e lottando contro tutta la difesa avversaria. Si guadagna di mestiere il corner dal quale nasce il vantaggio. Poi si procura il rigore con l’espulsione di Mandanda che lui stesso trasforma. L’Inter vince con lui a segno; la statistica si conferma,  ma il dato più importante è che tutto, in quel momento, è andato definitivamente all’aria…

ALLENATORE: RANIERI 6 – L’inizio roboante è tanto bello quanto illusorio: l’Inter, superato il ruggito iniziale, perde progressivamente mordente consentendo al Marsiglia di fare il proprio gioco spingendosi anche in avanti. Il gol di Milito regala una speranza di una possibile coda, vanificata da quella topica di Lucio che consente a Brandao di suggellare una qualificazione forse non proprio meritatissima. Da sottolineare comunque che la squadra esce applaudita da San Siro: degna passerella per una pagina di storia che forse ora va definitivamente a chiudersi.
