by Guardian Chalkboards

by Guardian Chalkboards

Man Utd 3 - 0 Tottenham

By Phil McNulty
Chief football writer

Homegrown striker Welbeck celebrates his crucial opener at Old Trafford

Manchester United swept Tottenham aside in impressive fashion as the Premier League champions made a powerful statement of intent at Old Trafford.

Spurs were without unsettled Luka Modric as he continues to be linked with a £30m move to Chelsea - and he was sadly missed as United overpowered Harry Redknapp's side after an evenly-contested first half.

Sir Alex Ferguson embarked on an expensive summer rebuilding programme, but it was United's home-grown talent that built the platform for their second successive win as they go in search of a 20th domestic title.

DID YOU KNOW?
Danny Welbeck's only other Manchester United Premier League goal came against Stoke on 15 November, 2008

With England coach Fabio Capello an interested observer, Danny Welbeck headed in Tom Cleverley's cross just after the hour and the young striker then produced a wonderful instinctive flick to set up a second for Anderson.

Wayne Rooney completed the formalities with a pinpoint late header from Ryan Giggs's centre to extend Spurs' miserable sequence of 22 years without a win at Old Trafford.

United's new goalkeeper David de Gea suffered more uncertain moments of handling but Phil Jones, another summer acquisition from Blackburn, ensured injured Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic were not missed with an outstanding performance.

The hosts' new arrivals made an impact early on as Jones and Ashley Young led a sweeping counter attack before Cleverley brought a fine fingertip save from the stretching Brad Friedel on his Spurs debut.

De Gea, watched from the directors' box by his predecessor Edwin van der Sar, was a focus of attention after early blunders following his summer move from Atletico Madrid and he needed to show neat footwork as Rafael Van der Vaart threatened to catch him in possession.

Young's movement was presenting problems for Spurs and he was inches away from giving United the lead with a looping header from Rooney's cross with Friedel stranded as he scrambled back towards goal.

Spurs wasted an opportunity to strike just after the break when Aaron Lennon was desperately wasteful with a cross inside the area, an incident that saw Van der Vaart pull his shirt over his head in fury.

It was the signal for United's most concerted spell of pressure - a decisive phase of the game that eventually led to them taking the lead just after the hour.

Redknapp keen to bolster Spurs squad

Friedel excelled once more with a fine double save from Anderson and Rooney, but he was powerless to prevent Welbeck taking advantage of Cleverley's inviting delivery by glancing a fine header into the corner.

United were carrying all the momentum and threat, with Friedel in acrobatic action again to save Rooney's free-kick as it seemed destined for the top corner and Welbeck's ambitious overhead kick.

Welbeck was oozing confidence after his goal and he illuminated Old Trafford with his part in Anderson's second 14 minutes from time. He took Anderson's pass inside the area before delivering an instant backheel which the midfield man took in his stride to score.

Tottenham rallied briefly and Jermain Defoe volleyed against the post following a rare De Gea error, the Spaniard flapping at a cross and allowing the Spurs striker to strike the woodwork from the angle.

But Rooney's third was simply confirmation of United's superiority as they move into second place behind neighbours Manchester City in the table.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson:
"The second-half performance was absolutely fantastic.
"It was a fast game in the first half, it was end-to-end. Tottenham had a lot of possession, but in the second half we just took off."

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp:
"I'm sure [Luka] Modric will stay. The chairman has made his mind up."

Manchester United 3 Tottenham 0: Danny heads for the top! Fantastic Welbeck is too hot for Spurs
By Matt Lawton

Last updated at 12:13 AM on 23rd August 2011

[size=1.2em]After securing £40million in sponsor ship from a certain logistics company, this was probably a night [size=1.2em]when [size=1.2em]Manchester United[size=1.2em] needed to deliver. [size=1.2em]
[size=1.2em]And it was the timing of the delivery that would have pleased Sir Alex Ferguson most.

Heads I win: Welbeck opens the scoring for United on the hour

MATCH FACTS
MANCHESTER UNITED (4-4-2): De Gea 6; Smalling 6, Evans 7, Jones 7, Evra 6; Nani 6, Cleverley 7 (Giggs 81min), Anderson 7, Young 7 (Park 81); Rooney 8, Welbeck 7 (Hernandez 81).
Subs not used: Lindegaard, Berbatov, Carrick, Fabio da Silva.
Scorers: Welbeck 61, Anderson 76, Rooney 87.
Booked: Evans.
TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR (4-4-1-1): Friedel 8; Walker 6 (Corluka 46, 6), Kaboul 6, Dawson 7, Assou-Ekotto 7; Lennon 6, Livermore 6 (Huddlestone 74, 6), Kranjcar 6 (Pavlyuchenko 74, 6), Bale 5; Van der Vaart 7; Defoe 6.
Subs not used: Gomes, Jenas, Bassong, Townsend.
Booked: Dawson, Defoe.
Man of the match: Wayne Rooney.
Referee: Lee Probert 6.
Attendance: 75,498.

[size=1.2em]The fact that on an evening when United's manager urged supporters to once again put their trust in a fresh crop of young players, those players proved their worth.
[size=1.2em]A relatively meaningless end-of-season game at Hull aside, two-and-a-half years ago, this was the youngest United team to have appeared in a Barclays Premier League encounter.
[size=1.2em]But Ferguson anticipated that there might be some concern among the Old Trafford masses and tackled the issue in his programme notes.

[size=1.2em]Conscious, clearly, that he might not land his principal transfer target of the summer in Wesley Sneijder, Ferguson urged supporters not to 'fret'.

[size=1.2em]He said he had confidence in this new generation of United players and by the end of this thoroughly entertaining encounter there was more than enough evidence to suggest that, as ever, the man knows what he is talking about.

Double your money: Anderson makes it two for the hosts

[size=1.2em]Even if there were still periods of the first half when United could have used someone of Sneijder's considerable quality and experience.
[size=1.2em]Ferguson sent out Danny Welbeck, Tom Cleverley, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and David de Gea at Old Trafford and Welbeck, in particular, repaid that trust, scoring the first goal and creating the second for Anderson before Ryan Giggs replied for the old guard by inviting Wayne Rooney to score the third.

Flying high: Rooney's late header completed a great night for the Champions

Heated: Nani and Younes Kaboul clashed in the first-half

[size=1.2em]That the cross for that opening goal came from Cleverley would have also pleased Ferguson, although nothing seemed to excite him more than the backheel Welbeck directed into the path of Anderson.
[size=1.2em]How fitting that on a night when United chose to mark that 19th league title with special scarves for every United supporter it was their No 19, Welbeck, who did most of the damage. Also of some encouragement was a clean sheet for De Gea.

Best of friends? Fergie and Redknapp share a joke while Roberto Mancini and David Platt look on

[size=1.2em]Twice he spilled a shot and twice Jermain Defoe nearly punished him, sending one effort against a post before just failing to beat the Spaniard to the loose ball on the second occasion. For Harry Redknapp, it was all rather more disappointing.
[size=1.2em]His players gave a pretty good account of themselves for the opening 45 minutes but lost momentum as United grew in stature after the break.

[size=1.2em]Crucially, they lacked something in midfield, a central partnership of Jake Livermore and Niko Kranjcar failing to impose itself in a way Luka Modric might have done had he not been holding out for that move to Chelsea.
[size=1.2em]United were able to carve through Tottenham's midfield, with Nani planting a cross on the head of Rooney only to see his colleague direct a soft header into the hands of Brad Friedel. Friedel's selection was an interesting one.
[size=1.2em]Heurelho Gomes did little wrong at Hearts but he was on the bench, pointing to the possibility that the Brazilian has always made his manager nervous.

[size=1.2em]It was developing into an entertaining game.

[size=1.2em]Some classy football as well as some crunching challenges, with Jones - while proving himself an able understudy to the injured Rio Ferdinand - lucky not to concede a dangerous free-kick for a foul on Gareth Bale.
[size=1.2em]But the breakthrough came just after the hour, Cleverley delivering a perfect ball that Welbeck rose above Michael Dawson to meet with a terrific header.

[size=1.2em]That Welbeck then provided the final ball for Anderson to score United's second in the 76th minute thrilled Ferguson.

[size=1.2em]We thought he was having us on when he first said Welbeck could soon be in the England squad.

[size=1.2em]But the one-two he executed with Anderson was exquisite, as was the cross Giggs then provided for Rooney to score the third.

Oh what a night! Welbeck celebrates on the night United fans celebrated their record 19th top-flight title

Garrido uses Bruno Soriano at the back to help guide Villarreal through
August 24, 2011

Villarreal's starting shape. Cani and Camunas switched flanks throughout.

Villarreal qualified for the Champions League last night with a 3-0 victory over Odense, sending them through 3-1 on aggregate.

Pre-match teamsheets suggested that Villarreal would be lining up in a 3-4-3 shape, with Juan Oriol, Mateo Musacchio and new signing Cristian Zapata in a three-man defence. That seemed unlikely, since Oriol is an attacking left-back, but it was difficult to see quite how Juan Carlo Garrido was going to play.

It turned out to be not dissimilar to their usual 4-2-2-2, albeit with some interesting variations. Bruno Soriano, usually regarded as a central midfielder, filled in at centre-back, despite the presence of two regular centre-backs on the bench in Gonzalo Rodriguez and Carlos Marchena. With a growing feeling that central midfielders are able to play at centre-back without any problems (see Sergio Busquets and Javier Mascherano’s roles for Barcelona last season), this was further evidence that managers may be starting the shift.

Certainly, Villarreal play a similar brand of football to Barcelona, and in this game dominated possession for the entire 90 minutes, so Soriano’s ‘heat map’ of his positioning probably wouldn’t have been too different to had he played in central midfield against an average La Liga side – in other words, near the halfway line. He had played at centre-back just once before, against Porto in last season’s Europa League semi-final second leg, again when Villarreal had to field an attack-minded side, having lost the first leg 5-1.

The second odd part of the formation was the use of Cristian Zapata at right-back. He had played that position for Udinese back in early 2009, but is very much a centre-back shoved out of position.

When Villarreal moved into attacking positions in the first half, they had no width down the right

This meant an odd, lopsided shape to Villarreal when they attacked. Zapata took up the role of an outside centre-back in a three-man defence, with he and Soriano spreading to the flanks. Oriol played as a wing-back, providing width down the left and stretching the play.

Villarreal only played across two-thirds of the pitch, however, because Zapata rarely made forward runs, limiting their presence down the right. With Cani and Javier Camuñas playing as interiores and moving inside, Villarreal frequently had five players in central positions, Oriol on the left, and no-one on the right.

Odense were aware of the lack of width, and therefore defended extremely narrow, forcing Villarreal to play through small spaces through the middle. Moves were too slow, and Villarreal went in 0-0 at half-time.

Garrido didn’t change personnel or positions at half-time, but did make changes. First, he got his side to play quicker when Odense were drawn up the pitch, taking advantage of space in behind. Second, and more crucially, he asked Nilmar and Cani/Camuñas to work the right-hand side – and this new threat took Odense by surprise. Balls were slid into the channel for Villarreal to collect on the move, and cross quickly.

There were three obvious outcomes from the sudden focus down the right. The first goal came with Nilmar running into the channel, then crossing for Giuseppe Rossi to score. The second came from Cani staying wide, then sending in a superb curling cross for Rossi to finish again. Furthermore, Odense’s left-sided midfielder, Bashkim Kadrii, suddenly had to do some defensive work, and was dismissed for two bookable offences.

Villarreal probably made winning this game more difficult than it should have been, but it was an interesting starting shape from Garrido, and a clever change of strategy midway through.

Leverkusen 0-0 Dortmund: two similar systems cancel each other out
August 27, 2011

The starting line-ups

Arguably the first ‘big’ game of the European League season produced a fairly uninspiring 0-0 draw.

Both sides were unchanged from their previous league fixtures, and both lined up in familiar 4-2-3-1 systems.

This was a slightly frustrating game to watch. The first two-thirds of the match were tense, tight and evenly-balanced, and with two clever young coaches in Jurgen Klopp and Robin Dutt on the sidelines, it seemed the game might have been decided by an astute tactical switch or a well-timed substitution.

As it turned out, both coaches were forced to adapt when their side went down to ten men, and late on it appeared that both were happy with a point.

Early pressing

The start of the game was a frenetic battle of pressing and passing in the centre of midfield. Dortmund came out of the traps quickly and immediately pressed, forcing Leverkusen into a couple of dodgy passes in dangerous positions.

Strangely, whilst it was Dortmund largely responsible for this type of game, it was probably Leverkusen who benefited from it. Klopp’s side wanted to play clever passes and involve Shinji Kagawa and Mario Gotze in play as much as possible, whilst Dutt’s side was a little more direct, with balls played from defence to attack bypassing the congested midfield zone. They weren’t playing ‘long ball football’ as such, but Stefan Kiessling was more of an outlet for direct balls than Robert Lewandowski.

Kagawa anonymous

Dortmund’s main problem was that Kagawa couldn’t dictate the game. In fact, that was a secondary issue stemming from a more immediate problem – they couldn’t get the ball to him in the first place. Leverkusen played intelligently against him, keeping it tight between the lines and blocking off the passing angles to him. Kagawa could have been more intelligent with his movement, moving to the flanks when Gotze came inside, for example – instead he stayed central and the first half bypassed him.

Renato Augusto, playing broadly the same role for Leverkusen, was more involved because he played deep and passes into his feet were easier. The home side had a clear route of attack: Dortmund were playing high up the pitch and keeping an aggressive offside trap, and whilst Kiessling wasn’t a huge threat in that respect, Andre Schurrle played high up against Marcel Schmelzer, and moved in behind the defence for passes played between Schmelzer and Mats Hummels. Roman Wiedenfeller had to make a brave save with his head for a Schurrle one-on-one, the game’s best chance.

Second half

Things opened up a little in the second half, and Dortmund were more of a force. There were few major tactical shifts at the beginning of the second period, though it seemed that Klopp instructed his side to sit deeper, as they weren’t so vulnerable to balls played in behind. The knock-on effect, though, was that Leverkusen players had more of a chance to run at the back four, and Hummels was lucky to escape a second booking when he brought down Augusto on the edge of the box.

Another result was that the midfield zone was more stretched, and this suited Dortmund, who put together some fine passing moves as the half went on. They also had more of a chance to counter quickly, something rarely seen in the first half but a key part of their strategy last year. Kagawa was more visible yet still not a huge threat, and it felt like he needed one of Dortmund’s two holding midfielders to make more of an effort to break forward, distract Leverkusen’s holders, and potentially open up space for Kagawa. In that sense, they miss Nuri Sahin.

The red cards (to Michael Kadlec, for a challenge on Gotze, and then Gotze for kicking Kadlec’s replacement at left-back Hanno Balitsch) rather ruined the end of the game, and meant the sides went into safety-first mode. Dortmund had passed the ball excellently in the 13 minutes when they had a numerical advantage, keeping width and spreading play from one flank to the other, but Gotze’s dismissal put an end to that, and also to the contest.

Conclusion

Not a huge amount of overall interest here. 4-2-3-1 played 4-2-3-1, and Dutt probably would have been happier with his side’s performance – managing to stifle Dortmund’s creative players, and also work a couple of good chances.

Neither side did enough to win the game – there was a lack of ambition in the sense that midfielders and full-backs rarely broke past forwards, and neither defence became overloaded. 0-0 was fair.

Guardiola ends the European Super Cup final with six central midfielders
August 28, 2011

The Barcelona XI that ended the European Super Cup final - the six midfielders are highlighted

Usually ZM looks at sides’ starting line-ups for matches, before assessing how the shape changed as the game went on.

This is slightly different, however, because the interesting thing about Barcelona’s Super Cup win over Porto on Friday was the way they finished the game, with six central midfielders amongst the ten outfield players.

The arrival of Cesc Fabregas has prompted various questions about where he’ll fit into the side. The real answer to that question is rotation – with Andres Iniesta a little injury-prone, Fabregas only averaging around 60% of league minutes over the past three seasons and Xavi Hernandez needing an increasing amount of rest these days, it’s not as big an issue as some have suggested.

Nevertheless, it is interesting that Pep Guardiola has tried to strengthen his side in midfield (and further forward, with the arrival of Alexis Sanchez). It’s hardly as if Barcelona need improvement in those zones – epitomised by the fact that when they won the European Cup final last season with a 3-1 win over Manchester United, their three forwards all scored a goal, and their three midfielders all recorded assists.

What Guardiola really needed was a centre-back. At a crucial stage last season he had a severe shortage in that position, meaning Sergio Busquets and Javier Mascherano had to deputise. Eric Abidal’s return from illness gives Guardiola another option there, but with Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique both out for a couple of weeks, Abidal is the only established fit centre-back at the club. Gabriel Milito has left the club, although with his lack of pace, he was completely unsuited to Barca’s high line. 21-year-old Andreu Fontas has been promoted to the first team, although at this point there’s nothing to suggest that Guardiola sees Fontas as anything like a regular this season.

So, whilst Busquets and Mascherano may have ‘filled in’ at centre-back last season, this campaign they might do so on a more regular basis. Pique, Puyol and Abidal will still be the first three choices, but Guardiola’s decision to prioritise spending €50m+ on a winger and another central midfielder suggests that he’s more than happy to play holding midfielders at the back.

In many ways, it makes perfect sense. Barcelona have the ball for the majority of every game they play, and therefore passing skills become more vital for the centre-backs. Guardiola wants good ball circulation from his side, and having two midfielders at the back will simply increase his side’s ability to pass effectively.

With the side playing so high up the pitch, Barcelona’s centre-backs will probably be playing in a similar zone of the pitch to holding midfielders in post sides, as mentioned with Bruno Soriano of Villarreal in midweek. Marcelo Bielsa, a good friend of Guardiola and another who favours a high defensive line, happily played central midfielders at the back with Chile – with Gary Medel and Arturo Vidal featuring there. He looks to be doing the same thing now at Athletic Bilbao with Javi Martinez and Carlos Gurpegi.

It’s along the same lines as something ZM has mentioned on many occasions – particularly the idea of a ‘modern centre-half’ who would start in midfield but drop into the backline as play develops. Busquets has done that many times before, of course, and did it on a permanent basis at Atletico last season.

It points to the gradual homogenisation of the centre-back and holding midfield roles, and a further development might be to play three players – two centre-backs and a holder – who can all play in each of the three positions. A trio of Mascherano, Busquets and Pique would be able to do that – Pique has the ability to play as a holding midfielder.

In this match, in addition to three central midfielders, Guardiola used Andres Iniesta on the left for the final minutes – nothing unusual about that, since he’s played that position quite often. He was the sixth nominal central midfielder in Barca’s system 4-3-3.

Can it go any further? Quite possibly. Messi, after all, is playing deeper and deeper – having gone from a high right-winger, to a central forward, to a false nine, and arguably now to a number ten in some games. Interestingly, in pre-season Guardiola tried both Fabregas and Thiago Alcantara in the Messi role, suggesting that a midfielder could sometimes play that role, too.

For Guardiola, he is taking his ideology a step further. His impact upon football has been significant in his short time in charge of Barca – having been forced into early retirement as a player because clubs didn’t want passing midfielders, as a manager he set about trying to build a midfield comprised entirely of passers.

The next step is to try and get as many passing midfielders into the side as possible.

Tottenham 1-5 Manchester City: Dzeko scores four but City impressive across the pitch
August 28, 2011

The starting line-ups

Manchester City produced an excellent performance to maintain their 100% start to the season.

Harry Redknapp was forced to use Niko Kranjcar and Luka Modric in the centre of midfield, whilst Peter Crouch got a start upfront.

Roberto Mancini gave Samir Nasri his debut in place of James Milner, whilst Nigel de Jong missed out through injury.

City were better in every department throughout this game.

City dominate first half

The first half started slowly, almost as if the game had kicked off too early for the players and supporters. It was also scrappy, with some needless bookings on either side. When it eventually settled down, City took command.

Whilst the sides were broadly playing the same system, the key was the use of wide players. Spurs’ are classic wingers who remained near the touchlines and wanted to take on full-backs, whilst Samir Nasri and David Silva came inside, picked up possession and contributed to flowing passing moves.

It can be a problem playing two wide players who like to come inside, because it makes the play narrow and predictable, and decreases the active playing zone meaning the opposition are less stretched (with the caveat that the full-backs get space to dart forward and provide width). Here, however, it worked quite well because Spurs had no true holding player – in fact, they had nothing like a holding player. Tom Huddlestone was only fit enough for the bench, and whilst Luka Modric and Kranjcar did a decent job in possession, they left too much space behind them. With Silva and Nasri both able to move into that position (which produced a good chance for Silva after seven minutes) and Aguero dropping deep, Tottenham were always likely to struggle in that zone.

The key was that Nasri didn’t both continually come inside. Nasri, in particular, kept width down the left and played in a different way to in his Arsenal days – in the sense that he got to a position near the byline, and then crossed the ball – albeit after checking onto his right foot. The first two goals, for Dzeko, both came from Nasri assists. He also enjoyed his relationship with Gael Clichy, who he knows from both Arsenal and France.

Second half

Redknapp tried to get some control of the midfield zone with the introduction of Huddlestone, who did a decent job in front of the back four. Still, City were the better side and Dzeko poked home another cross for his hattrick, whilst Aguero scored a great goal after another Nasri assist.

Tottenham’s problem was that City were finding too many gaps – and yet the more Tottenham tried to get back in the game, the more gaps they were going to leave. Being forced to replace Modric with Jake Livermore was maybe a blessing in disguise, but it meant there was less attacking threat. Jermain Defoe came on upfront but was forced to fend for himself.

In truth, the game was over by the time of Dzeko’s 55th minute goal, and the second half was a non-event as contest. Dzeko, however, was superb – clearly in form, now confident in the Premier League, and ready to lead City’s title charge. He was always a danger – he attempted ten shots in total.

Conclusion

An excellent performance from City, who utilised their three creative players well. The main man to benefit was Dzeko, who can now be sure of decent service in various ways – balls slid through the defence, crosses hung up, cut-backs from wide. City have a lot of attacking weapons.

Tottenham capitulated – they made it too easy for City between the lines and couldn’t get their creative players into the game.
