Whoscored.com

Prandelli’s Italian Uprising Topples Spain And Marches On
By Richard Whittle  11 August 2011

After a well-deserved 2-1 win over the World and European Champions Spain, Prandelli’s Italian revolution continues. Here's why he's such a visionary...

A wind of change is sweeping through the Italian game thanks to Cesare Prandelli’s revolutionary approach to the national team who downed World Champions Spain in midweek. Italy went from the heights of lifting the World Cup in 2006 to the depths of despair four years later when they failed to make it out of the group stages in South Africa, so when Cesare Prandelli took over as Commissario Tecnico from Marcello Lippi last summer the only way was up.
In breezy Bari on Wednesday evening, the Azzurri had the opportunity to gauge how far they had travelled along the revolutionary road set out by the new coach and La Nazionale did not disappoint with a well-deserved 2-1 win over the World and European Champions, Spain.
The only positive note to come from Italy’s early exit from the last World Cup was that Prandelli was given a clean slate when landed the reins of restoring pride on the international front, having turned Fiorentina into a top-four side in Serie A and to within a whisker of the Champions League quarter-finals only to exit to Bayern Munich.
After the debacle in South Africa, expectations had been suitably realigned with the new world order, which left Italy in a similar position to those other fading football empires England and France. However, the new man had the opportunity to create a fresh identity and introduced a new buzz word in Italian football: Meritocracy. Players would be in the squad on current form, not just because they were household names.
Lippi tried this policy in a friendly against Northern Ireland ahead of the 2009 Confederations Cup – but once the World Cup qualifiers kicked in again, the likes of the ball-playing Giuseppe Mascara, Pasquale Foggia and Sergio Pellissier were immediately cast aside for a more prosaic approach. Prandelli’s first task was be to ensure that he did not follow that tired and tested route to ultimate failure which only added to that unwanted number of one or two-cap wonders and little or no continuity from the traditionally successful Under-21 set-up.
His biggest worry was that the young players were not getting a look in at club level over the arc of a season to even merit a cap, with the likes of Inter, AC Milan and Juventus dominated by foreign or aged stars. However, as soon as Mario Balotelli moved to Manchester City after missing out in South Africa along with another maverick Antonio Cassano, the striker made the breakthrough to the senior squad in Prandelli’s first friendly against Ivory Coast last August.
Giuseppe Rossi was another who had been overlooked by Lippi but the former Manchester United and current Villareal forward was handed the number nine shirt. The shell-shocked youngsters who had been in South Africa, Domenico Criscito who moved to Zenit St Peterburg this summer, Claudio Marchisio and Leonardo Bonucci were shown confidence and given the chance to learn from their sobering experience while Andrea Ranocchia has made the step up despite some iffy outings for Inter.
Prandelli has become something of a visionary, putting forward a proposal that a select group of under-21s are allowed to play as a team in Serie B, where they would gain valuable experience of the rough and tumble of professional life
The saintly Cesare who is not only well-respected within the game but by the sports media in general, has taken many a stray waif under his wing including the likes of Adriano, Adrian Mutu and Alberto Gilardino to help them realise their full potential so there has been room for any player shining at club level to prove his worth on the international stage.
However, despite an amiable personality and an ability to get the best out of even the most wayward performers Prandelli has certainly not been a push-over when dealing with big egos.
He warned Cassano if he was not fit and playing regularly for AC Milan then his international career would be over and he left Balotelli and AS Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi out of his squad for the Euro 2012 qualifier against Slovenia after both players failed to observe his ‘code of ethics’ which was put in place outlawing any sort of unsporting behaviour. The pair had been sent off for their clubs in Europe so were blacklisted, but this was a temporary measure and the hand of forgiveness was extended to his bad boys when they demonstrated some contrition.
Even when the old guard such as Francesco Totti, Antonio Di Natale, and to a certain extent Alessandro Del Piero, were enjoying a rich vein of form last season, he resisted turning back the clock when the new generation needed all the support they could get.
In fact, Prandelli has become something of a visionary, putting forward a proposal that a select group of under-21s are allowed to play as a team in Serie B, where they would gain valuable experience of the rough and tumble of professional life rather than kick their heels at clubs where there is no reserve-team football.
One player who has benefited from leaving a top team has been Sebastian Giovinco, who looked set to become another wasted talent at Juventus where he failed to displace or even play alongside Del Piero. With his confidence shot to pieces, the Atomic Ant moved on to Parma – and lo and behold, he has been playing with the sort of verve and creativity that had originally marked him out as one to watch a few years ago.
Prandelli’s selection policy is very simple: if a player is starting for his club on a regular basis, good; if he is playing well, even better. Thus Giovinco has been given his opportunity, as have Alessandro Matri and Giampaolo Pazzini who have made the step up at Juventus and Inter, respectively while the promising Angelo Ogbonna who plays for Torino in Serie B was called up to the current squad.
The stirring victory over Spain is a major fillip for the much beleaguered Italian game and a year on after Prandelli’s first outing the quiet revolution is beginning to take shape which can only be good news for the country’s fledgling stars.

The 15 most intriguing managerial appointments of the summer August 11, 2010

Domenico di Carlo

It’s been a summer of few big-name signings, but plenty of interesting managerial moves across Europe. Here’s the most exciting 15…

15. Domenico di Carlo, Sampdoria
The first of many Serie A managers on the move this summer. Di Carlo had two solid seasons at Chievo, a club more than happy to finish in midtable. This challenge is something completely different – Sampdoria have Champions League football (as long as they progress past the qualification round), big expectations and some excellent players – aside from a complete overhaul of goalkeepers, the squad has remained almost identical to last season. Di Carlo’s major decision is whether to keep the attacking 4-4-2 system favoured by Luigi Delneri, or sacrifice a winger for another central midfielder, perhaps Fernando Tissone. Whatever happens behind the front two, it is the lethal combination of Antonio Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini that Samp are basing their side around.
14. Michael Preud’homme, Twente
After success at Standard Liege and a couple of decent years at Gent, Preud’homme has crossed the border to replace Steve McClaren at Twente. McClaren has not been the only departure from last season’s successful formula – captain and star striker Blaise N’Kufo, main creator Kenenth Perez, right-back Ronnie Stam and winger Miroslav Stoch are no longer at the club, and Twente looked out-of-sorts in their opening league game against Roda JC. Preud’homme has a small squad to work with, and the pressure of competing in the league and Champions League, McClaren might turn out to be a very difficult act to follow.
13. Paulo Sérgio, Sporting
Somewhat of a rebuilding job needed at Sporting – they may have only lost two players, but it’s been their two star names – Miguel Veloso and Joao Moutinho. It may turn out to be a blessing in disguise for both players and club – the two were stagnating at Sporting, and last season (28 points off the title in a 30 game season) was a complete disaster. Sérgio and Costinha, the club’s director of football, have concentrated on strengthening the squad at the back, signing three defenders, as well as veteran Maniche, who will probably play alongside Pedro Mendes in the centre of midfield. Further forward, a trio of Fernandez-Djalo-Liedson is deadly on paper – Sérgio needs to get it working on the pitch, but even if that happens, a title challenge is probably beyond Sporting this term.

Avram Grant

12. Avram Grant, West Ham
If a couple of penalties had not been missed, Grant’s reputation might be much more enhanced. Had John Terry converted his spot kick in Moscow in 2008, or had Kevin-Prince Boateng scored at Wembley in May, Grant would have recorded two astonishing victories. As it is, the West Ham job is a decent opportunity for him to further his career – they have a good squad that wasn’t utilized to anything like its full potential by Gianfranco Zola. In Thomas Hitzlsperger and Pablo Barrera he has signed two excellent technical players, and with the arrivals of Tal Ben Haim, Winston Reid and Frederic Piquionne the squad is stronger.
11. Bernd Schuster, Besiktas
A tremendously underrated manager who has experienced some level of success almost everywhere he has managed. This is his first appointment since leaving Real Madrid, where he won La Liga in 2008. He is in charge a side that stumbled to fourth place last season, but he has made two big signings – Guti from Real Madrid, and Ricardo Quaresma from Inter. He’s in the market for an experienced striker who will bring guaranteed goals – if that signing is completed, Besiktas could be a good bet for the title.
10. Andres Villas Boas, Porto
The new Mourinho? That’s the expected label for every promising new Portuguese manager, but Villas Boas is more likely to be Mourinho-esque than any other, as he worked with him at Porto, Chelsea and Inter. He’s distanced himself from the  comparisons, but it’s hard not to notice the similarities – Villas Boas was never a professional footballer, instead he started working as a low level coach at Porto under Bobby Robson, eventually becoming one of Mourinho’s most important members of staff. He dresses sharply, is still only 33, and like Mourinho, struggled in his first assignment as a manager, leading Academica to 11th out of the 16 teams in the Liga Sagres last season. He takes over an extremely talented Porto squad that has lost previous captain Bruno Alves, but gained Sporting’s captain, Joao Moutinho.
Jean Tigana

9. Jean Tigana, Bordeaux
Tigana’s managerial career has been something of a disappointment. After his Ligue 1 win with Monaco in 1997 he seemed set to become one of the game’s leading coaches, but since then has only achieved mild success at Fulham and Besiktas – where he won two Turkish Cups but failed to win the title. Now he takes charge of Bordeaux, following the departure of Laurent Blanc to become the national team manager. After brilliantly winning the title in 2008/09, Bordeaux struggled to juggle league and Champions League commitments last season, and slumped to sixth in the league. Transfer activity has been quiet – largely a good thing, since Tigana’s main concern was keeping Yoann Gourcuff. He has started with a 1-0 defeat to Montpellier, where Bordeaux lined up with a fluid 4-4-2 diamond shape.
8. Max Allegri, Milan
A tremendously difficult job. Milan have the same old problems – literally. An ageing squad has still not been refreshed, and the summer transfer window has consisted of signing two defenders from midtable sides – Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Genoa, and 34-year-old Mario Yepes from Chievo. Allegri is in a strange position – surprisingly sacked by midtable Cagliari towards the end of last season, and suddenly finding himself in charge of a Champions League side. He had been widely praised until his departure from Cagliari for doing a decent job with unspectacular players and limited resources, but it’s difficult to see how he’ll be able to transform this Milan squad into genuine title challengers unless there is significant investment in the side.
7. Roy Hodgson, Liverpool
Having been a manager for 40 years, Hodgson has finally found himself taking charge of a big club in his home country, after his success in taking Fulham to the Europa League final last season. Opinion remains divided on how difficult his task is – on one hand Liverpool are coming off the back of a disastrous season, on the other they retain a very good first XI – assuming everyone stays at the club, which is looking increasingly likely. What Liverpool need is a more solid squad, and the pursuit of unspectacular players like Luke Young and Brad Jones signals that someone at the club understands this – it remains to be seen how much control Hodgson has over transfers, but we can be sure that Liverpool will be well-organised and positionally disciplined.
Gigi Delneri

6. Gigi Delneri, Juventus
Another crack at managing a ‘big’ club for a manager who has been tremendously successful at clubs with slightly lower ambitions. Delneri (not Del Neri) made his name with Chievo, guiding them to promotion to Serie A for the first time in their history, and fifth place in their debut season in 2001/02. More recently, he took Sampdoria to fourth place last season. Between that, however, he had two unhappy spells when given the responsbility of managing clubs with title ambitions. In 2004 he replaced Jose Mourinho at Porto, but was sacked before the season had even started. He then took the Roma job, but only lasted six months. Delneri has a distinctive way of playing – generally favouring a 4-4-2 / 4-2-2-2 system, with a focus on attacking, pacey wingers – so taking over a club distinctly lacking in that area last season will be a big challenge. He’s sounded ambitious so far, saying, “We want to reinforce our Italian brand through serious politics on youth players, and as well as this the team wants to win instantly.”
5. Michael Laudrup, Mallorca
One of the most exciting players of his generation, and potentially a wonderful coach too. Laudrup’s most impressive time as manager was in Spain, where he took unfashionable Getafe to the Copa del Rey final and the the last eight of the UEFA Cup, so it’s no surprise he has returned to La Liga after a disappointing period in charge of Spartak Moscow. He’s already promised to play attacking football, and has a good base to work from – Mallorca finished in fifth last season, just one point off Champions League football. With 3rd-placed Valencia having lost their best two players, and 4th-placed Sevilla giving a chance to the inexperienced Antonio Alvarez, Mallorca are in a prime position to push on.
4. Sinisa Mihajlovic, Fiorentina
Mihajlovic as a manager? His reputation as a player hardly makes him the most obvious candidate to become a successful coach, but perhaps, as Jonathan Wilson believes, he is a more complex and interesting character than often portrayed. He endured an unhappy period as manager of Bologna where he allegedly fell out with senior players, but impressed last season at Catania, taking charge in December when they were 20th out of 20th in the table, and guiding them to a comfortable 13th place finish. He inherits a Fiorentina squad with relatively few changes from last season, where they faded after their Champions League exit to Bayern. Unfortunately, he’ll have to do without Stevan Jovetic for most of the season after the Montenegrin’s serious knee injury, and Mihajlovic might therefore have to turn to Adrian Mutu oncer the Romanian’s drug ban expires in two months time. This would be a fiery relationship anyway, but factor in a previous altercation between the two, and we might see Mihajlovic’s on-pitch behaviour come back to haunt him.
3. Steve McClaren, Wolfsburg
It’s difficult to judge McClaren’s managerial career so far – a decent job with Middlesbrough, an embarrassing failure at England, incredible success at Twente. His decision to leave the Dutch Champions signals his ambition, and in Wolfsburg he is in charge of a tremendously talented bunch of players, who slumped to a disappointing 8th place finish last season. Free of European commitments, it’s not unrealistic to expect a title challenge. Wolfsburg had no problems with goalscoring last season, but had one of the worst defensive records in the league. McClaren has sought to solve this problem by signing the superb Simon Kjaer from Palermo, but his main concern will be preventing Edin Dzeko from leaving. Keeping the Bosnian might be the difference between a decent title push, and a season of consolidation.

Rafael Benitez and Jose Mourinho

2. Jose Mourinho, Real Madrid
What more can be said about Mourinho? An astonishing run of success since 2003 has made him by far the world’s most talked-about manager, and has seen him mentioned amongst the greatest coaches in history. That will divide opinion, but his track record cannot be disputed. A title win in Madrid, and he will become the first manager in history to win the league title in England, Spain and Italy, not to mention his initial success in Portugal. He has played down expectations, notably saying “I am successful at clubs, generally in the second year”, a more modest introduction than his opening pronouncements when arriving in London and Milan. The short-term question is what style of football he’ll play – the attacking game Real fans want, or the defensive style Mourinho has (slightly unfairly) become associated with. The long-term question is whether Mourinho can stay at a club long enough to build a true legacy, or whether he’ll become a modern day Bela Guttmann, always in demand, but never staying at one club for longer than three seasons.
1. Rafael Benitez, Inter
More intriguing than Mourinho in Madrid? Quite possibly. With Mourinho, only failure will change our opinion of him – he’s been successful wherever he’s gone, so further success in Madrid is expected. Benitez’ reputation remains in the balance, however – he followed a tremendous run of trophies at Valencia with an ultimately disappointing spell in charge of Liverpool, despite a European Cup in his first seson. Failure or success in Milan? It will be fascinating either way, but the suspicion is that his mentality will suit Serie A well. He’s in the difficult position of taking charge after the most successful season in Inter’s history, and since they have won the past five Serie A titles, anything but a sixth will see Benitez ridiculed. His probable gameplan? To change as little as possible. There have been few key transfers involving the club this summer, and Benitez will most likely stick to the 4-2-3-1 that Mourinho favoured towards the end of last season.

由 jacobi_Cheng 发表在GoalHi足球

Gigi Delneri

15 managerial appointments – the verdict

May 23, 2011

Domenico di Carlo

Back in August, ZM published a list of the 15 most intriguing managerial appointments of the summer.

All were taking new jobs with speculation about how well they would fare. Some have done brilliantly, but more have been a disappointment, and an amazing number are no longer in their position. Here, then, is a summary of how each has performed.

15. Domenico di Carlo, Sampdoria

What was said - “Sampdoria have Champions League football (as long as they progress past the qualification round…it is the lethal combination of Antonio Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini that Samp are basing their side around.”

How Sampdoria did – Relegated. Di Carlo was sacked in March.

Sampdoria managed to blow their Champions League hopes in the qualification round with a late concession against Werder Bremen, and by January they’d lost both Cassano and Pazzini. The relegation is only partly the fault of di Carlo, who was in 9th position at the midway point in the league, and 14th place by the time he left the club, and Sampdoria ended up 18th. Losing the star strike partnership was a huge loss, and Samp went on a five game run without scoring a goal that coincided with Pazzini’s departure.

Rating – 3/10.

14. Michael Preud’homme, Twente

What was said – “Preud’homme has a small squad to work with, and the pressure of competing in the league and Champions League, McClaren might turn out to be a very difficult act to follow.”

How Twente did – Knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage, but a second-placed league finish, after losing to Ajax in a final day decider.

After starting the season with two 0-0s, it seemed that Preud’homme was going to struggle, but a good title charge and a victory in the Dutch Cup final means he can be regarded as a success. Slipping from 1st to 2nd in the league was obviously a disappointment, but considering that Twente lost many of their first-choice players from the championship season, it was a decent effort. The task now is to build the squad, and try and make a bigger impression on the Champions League, if Twente can get past the qualifiers.

Rating – 7/10.

13. Paulo Sérgio, Sporting

What was said – “Somewhat of a rebuilding job needed at Sporting…a title challenge is probably beyond Sporting this term”

How Sporting did – Another third place finish, miles away from the title winners Porto, and disappointment in the cup competitions too. Sergio was sacked in February.

Sporting’s main problems have been off the pitch this season, but there was on-pitch turmoil too. Sergio never really seemed sure of his best formation or starting XI, and it produced a disjointed, scrappy side that lacked cohesion. A title challenge was never likely, whilst getting into a European place always seemed assured, so perhaps judgement on Sergio came down to the derby games, with little else to play for – Sporting lost both games 2-0 to Benfica.

Rating – 4/10

12. Avram Grant, West Ham

What was said – “The West Ham job is a decent opportunity for him to further his career”

How West Ham did – Relegated, 20th place out of 20. Grant was sacked shortly after the relegation was confirmed.
Grant was hardly helped by being spectacularly undermined by West Ham’s board, but that doesn’t excuse West Ham’s poor performances all season. Grant appeared clueless tactically – with reports, like in his Chelsea days, that the players were essentially managing themselves – whilst midfielder Scott Parker seemed to be the one giving dressing room team talks. It’s difficult to understand quite what Grant was actually doing at the club, and it’s equally difficult to imagine him getting another Premier League job soon, having taken consecutive sides to 20th place in the Premier League, after the failure at Portsmouth last season.

Rating – 2/10

11. Bernd Schuster, Besiktas

What was said – “A tremendously underrated manager who has experienced some level of success almost everywhere he has managed.”

How Besiktas did – Spent the campaign around 6th place, nowhere near a title challenge. Schuster left the club in March.

No success here. Schuster spent his time bringing in big name players, many Portuguese – Ricardo Quaresma, Guti, Hugo Almeida, Manuel Fernandes and Simao. He combined these acquisitions with an attacking style of play, but there were various reports that he didn’t have control of the dressing room, and he chopped and changed systems with no regard for continuity. The sacking was no surprise.

Rating – 3/10

10. Andre Villas Boas, Porto

Andre Villas Boas

What was said – “The new Mourinho? That’s the expected label for every promising new Portuguese manager, but Villas Boas is more likely to be Mourinho-esque than any other.”

How Porto did – Treble winners, and unbeaten all season in the league.

An astonishingly successful season for Villas Boas, where he transformed Porto from also-rans last year, to amongst the best sides in Europe, despite getting rid of two key players – Bruno Alves and Raul Meireles. Porto were rampant against the smaller Portuguese league sides, and often against genuinely good teams too – Benfica were thrashed 5-0, Villarreal were beaten 5-1. The one disappointment is that we didn’t get to see Porto in the Champions League – hopefully the squad will stay largely intact next season, with Villas Boas still at the helm.

Rating – 10/10

9. Jean Tigana, Bordeaux

What was said – “Tigana’s managerial career has been something of a disappointment…transfer activity has been quiet – largely a good thing, since Tigana’s main concern was keeping Yoann Gourcuff.”

How Bordeaux did – Midtable for the entire campaign. Tigana left earlier this month.

Gourcuff left, and Bordeaux never looked like challenging for the Champions League places. Strangely, they did well against the top sides in the league – they drew both games with Lille, and beat both PSG and Lyon, but the performance over the course of the season was poor. Bordeaux generally dominated possession but frequently looked clueless in the final third, and Tigana’s career has taken another blow.

Rating – 4/10

8. Max Allegri, Milan

What was said – “A tremendously difficult job…it’s difficult to see how he’ll be able to transform this Milan squad into genuine title challengers unless there is significant investment in the side.”

How Milan did – Champions for the first time since 2004.

Significant investment arrived – Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Robinho and Kevin-Prince Boateng joined late in the summer, whilst Antonio Cassano, Mark van Bommel, Nicola Legrottaglie and Urby Emanuelson followed in January. Allegri’s side were unquestionably the best side in Serie A over the course of the season, combining a familiar base to the side with revolving door of talent upfront. The limp display against Tottenham in the Champions League suggests that this wasn’t a great side, but Allegri deserves praise for turning around Milan so quickly.

Rating – 8/10.

Roy Hodgson

7. Roy Hodgson, Liverpool

What was said – “Hodgson has finally found himself taking charge of a big club in his home country…we can be sure that Liverpool will be well-organised and positionally disciplined.”

What happened – Liverpool spent most of Hodgson’s reign in the bottom half, until he was sacked in January, and Kenny Dalglish took them up the table.

Well-organised and positionally disciplined they may have been, but Liverpool were frequently toothless upfront, and played very poor football that infuriated Liverpool supporters. Liverpool’s best displays under him were against the top sides – an opening day draw against Arsenal that should have been a win, a narrow defeat to Manchester United, and a controlled 2-0 win over Chelsea. This just suggested that Hodgson’s methods suit an underdog rather than a side looking to challenge high up the table, and his attitude away from home was rather defeatist. Hodgson has since taken charge of West Brom, where he has experienced success, but both he and Liverpool are better apart.

Rating – 3/10

6. Gigi Delneri, Juventus

What was said – “Another crack at managing a ‘big’ club for a manager who has been tremendously successful at clubs with slightly lower ambitions.”

How Juventus did – A final position of 7th. Delneri was sacked this weekend.

Juventus had only lost twice by the end of 2010, but a disastrous January and February saw the side slip down the table and out of Champions League contention. The difference in performance in the first half and second half of the season was stark, almost as if opposition managers were able to work out Delneri’s rather predictable 4-4-2 formation after one attempt. The sacking came as no surprise, and like Hodgson, it seems Delneri is not suited to big clubs.

Rating – 3/10

5. Michael Laudrup, Mallorca

What was said - “Mallorca finished in fifth last season, just one point off Champions League football…they are in a prime position to push on.”

How Mallorca did – 17th place, one point off relegation.
It’s mystifying how Mallorca managed to end up in such a state – they were in the top half of the table with five games to go, but an end-of-season collapse meant they almost ended up relegated. Like Tigana, Laudrup showed an ability to compete with the big sides, as Mallorca drew with Barcelona and Real Madrid, and beat Valencia, but there were also heavy defeats and Mallorca rarely showed the attacking football Laudrup had promised.

Rating – 4/10

Sinisa Mihajlovic

4. Sinisa Mihajlovic, Fiorentina

What was said – “His reputation as a player hardly makes him the most obvious candidate to become a successful coach…we might see Mihajlovic’s on-pitch behaviour come back to haunt him.”

How Fiorentina did – Just about ended the season in the top half.

Major injury problems disrupted Fiorentina’s season – star man Stevan Jovetic missed the entire campaign, whilst the likes of Riccardo Montolivo and Sebastien Frey were also out for long periods. Taking this into account, Fiorentina did OK, but it was a season that will be forgotten quickly – with nothing to play for after the early Coppa Italia defeat, Mihajovic’s performance is slightly difficult to judge, but he’ll probably be given another season.

Rating – 5/10

3. Steve McClaren, Wolfsburg

What was said – “He is in charge of a tremendously talented bunch of players…it’s not unrealistic to expect a title challenge.”

How Wolfsburg did – Bottom half for the entire campaign. McClaren was dismissed in February.

A tremendous chance gone to waste. McClaren had rebuilt his managerial reputation after the success with Twente, and now finds himself back being linked to West Ham, a second tier club, having been at Wolfsburg, a side who won the championship as recently as 2009. McClaren was able to bring in players, but had a bad relationship with Edin Dzeko, who eventually left in January, and star signing Diego rarely showed his true quality. A run of seven draws at the turn of the year suggested a lack of confidence and belief, and McClaren’s poor showing even resulted in an impressive ‘umbrella protest’ from the Wolfsburg fans. He left the club just one point off relegation, they ended up two points off relegation.

Rating – 2/10

Jose Mourinho

2. Jose Mourinho, Real Madrid

What was said – “He has played down expectations, notably saying “I am successful at clubs, generally in the second year,” a more modest introduction than his opening pronouncements when arriving in London and Milan.”

How Real did – Second place in the league, a Champions League exit to Barcelona, but a Copa del Rey in the bag.

Mourinho knew how difficult his task was, and dethroning the greatest club side of this generation proved too much in the first year. The 5-0 defeat at the Nou Camp was unquestionably Mourinho’s lowest point as a manager, and whilst he recovered to win the Copa del Rey, Real’s performance against Barcelona in the Champions League was disappointing, and Mourinho’s subsequent excuses rather sad. The side is in a good position to push on – Mesut Ozil has been fantastic, Cristiano Ronaldo has been prolific and the defensive part of the side is in good shape, and assuming Mourinho is around, they should strongly challenge for the title.

Rating – 6/10

1. Rafael Benitez, Inter

What was said – “He’s in the difficult position of taking charge after the most successful season in Inter’s history, and since they have won the past five Serie A titles, anything but a sixth will see Benitez ridiculed.”

How Inter did – 7th in Serie A when Benitez left, 2nd by the end of the season

Benitez took charge of a side that appeared physically and mentally exhausted, and the amazing stream of injuries he had to deal with was probably no coincidence. Benitez supporters point to the injury crisis as the main reason he failed, but Benitez actually dealt quite impressively with that – his problem was that when he had something close to his full side available, Inter rarely played well. There was a run of eight games where Inter only scored five goals, whilst they failed to score against fellow big clubs – Juventus, Roma and Milan all kept clean sheets against Benitez’s Inter. He won 40% of his league games in charge, whilst his replacement Leonardo won 74%.

Wesley Sneijder didn’t like his tactics – “I got frustrated under Benitez….he wanted me to play as a striker,” whilst Cristian Chivu threatened to walk off the pitch unless the forwards started defending. Amongst all this, Benitez did manage to win the World Club Cup, but it’s been a disappointing couple of seasons for one of Europe’s top coaches.

Rating – 3/10

Overall conclusion

Nine sackings, only two league titles.

Stoke 0-0 Chelsea: Villas Boas starts with draw

August 14, 2011

The starting line-ups

A decent game, but a 0-0 draw in Andre Villas Boas’ first game in charge of Chelsea.
Tony Pulis gave a a debut to Jonathan Woodgate at the back, and started with Stoke’s usual 4-4-1-1 from last season – two wingers, plus Jon Walters just off Kenwyne Jones.
Villas Boas kept Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka on the bench, using two wide players either side of Fernando Torres.
Chelsea struggled to get going and spent most of the first half dealing with Rory Delap’s long throws into the penalty area, but got better as the game went on.

Physicality
This was, as expected, a game with some strong challenges and lots of set-pieces. Stoke fielded four centre-backs and based their game around dead ball situations, though Chelsea generally dealt with them well – Petr Cech was keen to come out and try and punch the ball clear amongst the crowd.
It was also very high tempo at the start. Jones and Walters closed down Chelsea’s centre-backs quickly which prevented John Terry and Alex playing the ball into the midfield zone – they had to go back to Petr Cech, who then thumped the ball downfield where Torres had little chance of winning aerial duels. Walters kept an eye on John Obi Mikel to try to stop him dictating play, though the Nigerian still had more touches than any other player in the first half.
Chelsea high line
Villas Boas always instructed his Porto side to play high up the pitch and keep an aggressive defensive line, and that was immediately clear at the back today. Indeed, it was especially useful here because Chelsea wanted to keep Jones as far from goal as possible to negate his aerial threat, so Terry and Alex played high up.
This is usually combined with pressing higher up the pitch, but it was impossible to assess how Chelsea will play under Villas Boas in this respect. Kicks from Asmir Begovic were always long, and the defenders looked to bypass midfield and hit Jones, so there was often no opportunity to press. The Chelsea midfield instead dropped off and kept it tight between the defensive and midfield lines – not that there was a particular threat from Stoke in that area.
Wide players
The different roles of wide players in Chelsea's 4-3-3. In light blue, the counter-attacking wingers under Jose Mourinho. They started from a position level with the midfielders, then sprinted forward to join the lone striker. In blue, the half-and-half wingers under Carlo Ancelotti - defending wide, but coming inside to link midfield and attack. In purple, the possible role under Villas Boas, staying high up the pitch and cutting into the box.

The roles of the wide players will be one of the more interesting aspects of Chelsea’s play this season. They’ve almost always played 4-3-3 since the Jose Mourinho days, but he, Ancelotti and Villas Boas demand different things of their wingers. Mourinho wanted fairly classic wingers like Arjen Robben, Damien Duff and Shaun Wright-Phillips (Joe Cole being a slight exception) who would stretch the play, and drop off into midfield to form a 4-5-1 without the ball. Ancelotti, on the other hand, used players like Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka who would come inside to the midfield and make the side look more like a 4-3-2-1 with the ball – most obviously, in the title-winning 2-1 win at Manchester United.
Judging by his time at Porto and his use of Malouda and Kalou here, Villas Boas wants something different. He wants wide forwards who can provide initial width, then come inside and provide a goal threat. In Portugal he used Hulk as a second striker to the right, and Silvestre Varela providing width on the left. Both stayed high up the pitch and sprinted towards the far post when the ball was on the opposite flank.
It wasn’t entirely obvious what Kalou and Malouda were asked to do here – Kalou was quiet on the right, but Malouda played wider than he generally did under Ancelotti, although a couple of times his delivery was very poor when he received a pass.
Meanwhile, Pulis switched Stoke’s wingers to provide different angles for crosses, but they weren’t at all threatening in open play, forced too far from the opposition goal. What they really needed was pace, and Walters was unable to provide runs in behind Jones, whilst also asked to drop off onto Mikel.
Second half
Chelsea grew in stature in the second half, partly because Stoke pressured less from the front. The passing of Terry and Mikel was more incisive, and a couple of decent moments from Torres looked dangerous. Their combination play was decent, but only really when Lampard and Ramires made forward runs – the wide players exerted little influence on the game and were both removed. When those two midfielders did get forward, it was notable that Chelsea’s players overlapped a lot, to drag defenders away from goal and allow the man on the ball inside. The closest Chelsea came to scoring was one of these instances, when Anelka curled the ball onto the bar.
Villas Boas’ strategy late on seemed confused – Anelka and Drogba replaced Malouda and Kalou, and Chelsea then looked like a narrow 4-3-1-2ish shape, with Anelka behind the other two forwards, similar to how Ancelotti experimented immediately after Torres’ arrival. The man who many think would be best for that role, Benayoun, only got a couple of minutes on the pitch – and that was at the expense of Torres, rather than to combine with him.
Conclusion
Some promising signs for Chelsea, but not yet a clear departure from the way they played last season. With practically the same squad and with Villas Boas favouring the same base formation, any’ changes will be slightly more subtle – the way they use the ball in deep positions, and the way they try and regain possession.
This a difficult first outing – not only did Chelsea not look 100% fit (a theme of the opening weekend of the Premier League) they were also against tough, physical opponents. In no other game this season will the ball spend less time on the ground, and as Villas Boas wants a positive, attacking style of football, this might not be typical of Chelsea’s performances this season.
For Stoke, it was more of the same – almost no difference in style from last season, and they should be comfortably midtable in 2011/12.

Eight points on Real Madrid 2-2 Barcelona

August 16, 2011

The starting line-ups

The 2011/12 Spanish season started with an open, exciting Supercopa first leg between Barcelona and Real.

Like the Community Shield, a full-scale analysis of a semi-competitive fixture would be a little much, so here are eight talking points from the game:

1. It was interesting that Jose Mourinho went with exactly the same XI that was humbled in the 5-0 at the Nou Camp last year. The subsequent four Clasicos were all about Mourinho trying to correct the mistakes from that game. Real’s main playmaker in 2010/11, Mesut Ozil, barely featured in the Clasico mini-series, and when did, he was shoved out to the flank. For Mourinho, there was an element of demonstrating to his players that they’ve improved in the past year – from a 5-0 thrashing to a draw, without compromising Real’s natural plans (as they did in the subsequent four games).

2. Real’s main tactic in the Clasicos last year was to quickly play the ball in behind Barcelona’s advanced full-backs, taking advantage of that space and dragging the centre-backs wide. They tried that again here, and it worked perfectly for the first goal – Karim Benzema moved to the right in behind Adriano, Eric Abidal had to move to the left, and Ozil was free to finish in the centre. This appears the best way to attack Barca, and it’s notable that it was Benzema – rather than a winger – who got in behind, for the wingers can’t bring themselves to be brave enough to let Barca’s full-backs go free.

3. On the other flank, Cristiano Ronaldo was used up against Dani Alves. This happened twice in the five games last season – once in the 5-0, once in the 1-1 second leg in the Champions League. Alves makes significantly fewer forward runs when up against Ronaldo, and it will be interesting to see if Mourinho is prepared to play Ronaldo there in the league meetings between the two sides.

4. Pep Guardiola has complained about his players’ lack of fitness – Lionel Messi, Javier Mascherano, Dani Alves, Alexis Sanchez and Adriano were at the Copa America, whilst the club’s US tour caused further difficulties. “The problem is that the heat prevented us from training, and has hampered the team’s level of intensity,” Guardiola said. “We used to have pre-season in Europe, but now we tour. We have to adapt…we really need more time to get to our peak fitness.” This was obvious in how little they pressed throughout the game, far less than in the previous two campaigns.

5. That lack of pressing – combined with a more positive approach from Real – meant that Barca enjoyed much less possession than usual. Statistics vary according to precisely how ‘possession’ is calculated (see Opta’s explanation) but 48% seems to be the most frequently-cited number, more than 10% more than in any Clasico last season.

6. The use of substitute Fabio Coentrao in midfield was another interesting development. He played in that position during Real’s pre-season games, and because Marcelo did rather well in Coentrao’s favoured position of left-back last season, he might find himself used there more regularly this season. He brings a lot of energy to the role, and can also move to the left and offer Marcelo cover, something the Brazilian doesn’t get from Ronaldo.

7. Barcelona spent the second half of last season struggling for centre-backs, but haven’t purchased anyone who can play that role. Instead, Javier Mascherano again started at the back, hinting that the arrival of Cesc Fabregas into an already-congested midfield zone might mean either Mascherano or Sergio Busquets plays more permanently at the back, meaning another ball player can be accommodated in the side.

8. Perhaps you’d expect it from a small, pacey versatile attacker, but Alexis Sanchez already seems to fit into Barca’s system seamlessly. He’ll essentially be doing the reverse of what he did last season at Udinese – starting wide, then cutting in, rather than starting centrally and drifting to the flanks. His movement here was excellent, especially the way he moved diagonally across the front of the Real defence. The one caveat to this is that he likes to receive the ball to feet in deep positions, before running at pace. Barca’s current system requires the wide players to play higher up, and Guardiola will have to be careful he has enough vertical movement from his forwards.

大概是,有4点专门论述魔力鸟如何老瓶老醋对付巴萨(上半场),专打压上的边后卫身后空档,从而在巴萨左后卫薄弱处由本泽马突破传中,中路厄齐尔赶在巴萨中卫前面打门一蹴而就,取得领先,这很像上上赛季国米主场扳平比分的打法,后面所进2球,也是从巴萨左路薄弱处取得突破的;

依旧无动于衷 o(╯□╰)o

Arsenal 1-0 Udinese: Early Walcott goal gives Arsenal the advantage

August 16, 2011

The starting line-ups

Udinese constantly threatened on the counter-attack but failed to beat Wojciech Szczesny.

Arsene Wenger brought in Theo Walcott and Maroune Chamakh for Andrei Arshavin and the suspended Robin van Persie.

Francesco Guidolin ditched last season’s 3-5-1-1 for a more conventional 4-1-4-1 shape, with plenty of midfield runners trying to link up with Antonio Di Natale.

This was open and exciting, yet tense and nervous at the same time. It would have been interesting to see Udinese really go for it in the second half, but with the comfort of a second leg back in Udine, they never really committed enough men forward to overload Arsenal at the back.

Arsenal fluid

This was an extremely fluid 4-3-3 from Arsenal, with the front three rotating throughout, and the trio of midfielders also taking it in turns to get forward. Tomas Rosicky played a deepish role, where he seems more comfortable and gets more time on the ball, whilst Aaron Ramsey was the most advanced midfielder – creating the early goal for Theo Walcott with a good forward run.

The fluidity in midfield seemed to make the game open – probably too open for Arsenal after their early lead. They often left too much space between the lines of attack and defence, and it often seemed too easy for Udinese’s midfield runners to burst through the defence – Pablo Armero should have scored a one-on-one in the first half having beaten Arsenal’s entire backline with nothing more than a quick dash after a ball played twenty metres in front of himself.

The flexibility of Arsenal’s midfield created the same effect in Udinese’s side as they tracked runners. Emmanuel Agyemang was the deepest midfielder but played the role very casually, often moving high up the pitch and jogging back when Arsenal’s midfielders broke past him.

For a side that plays a counter-attacking style, Udinese defended surprisingly high up the pitch early on, which played into the hands of Walcott – who used his pace well for the goal – as well as Gervinho. Maroune Chamakh was poor and contributed little throughout.

Second half

After the break, Udinese played Giampiero Pinzi higher up the pitch to link up more closely with Di Natale, which helped force Arsenal back and gave Udinese more possession. The home side weren’t helped by two injuries to the backline – first Kieran Gibbs departed with a hamstring injury, then his replacement Johan Djourou suffered the same fate, and Carl Jenkinson came on at left-back.

As it happened, conceding the majority of possession might have worked well for Arsenal. Udinese are slightly reliant upon playing on the break, and often look less threatening when the opposition sit deep. With Di Natale they have a forward who likes drifting to the flanks and getting on the end of balls over the top – and whilst he’s a great poacher, he’s not a huge presence in the box from crosses.

A more traditional target man might have made things difficult for Arsenal – with their front three often ending up in central positions and the Udinese full-backs consequently free to get forward, 2 v 1 situations down the flanks might have yielded rewards. Guidolin played this one reasonably cautiously, however, only replacing players because of injury and/or tiredness, and keeping the same shape.

Wenger (and his assistant Pat Rice, as Wenger was banned from contact with the team) was limited in terms of substitutions because of the injury problems. Emmanuel Frimpong replaced Rosicky to give more presence in front of the defence, and it stayed 1-0.

Conclusion

A decent game, and a result that seemed to suit both sides for much of the second half. Arsenal were content with the clean sheet, Udinese knew that at 1-0 they’ve got a decent chance back in Italy – a second Arsenal goal might have been the end of their hopes.

The main tactical interest came in the overall pattern of the game rather than specific factors: counter-attacking sides need space either between the lines or in behind the opposition defence, and when Arsenal sat deep and stayed more compact, Udinese were less of a threat in open play than in the first half.
