Olympiacos 2-2 Inter: a 'Pazzo' comeback
Sunday, 21 August 2011 20:22:57
GENEVA - A 2-2 finish. The last friendly of summer 2011 for Gian Piero Gasperini's Inter. A Greek exam that was anything but boring, and a defeat staved off with heart and muscle. There was the brace from Pazzini and many other positive things. In the first half, for example, we saw excellent buildup, chances, improvement from individual players and Gian Piero Gasperini's plans becoming reality on the pitch. A flexible Inter that changed formation three times (3-4-3 and 4-3-3) because, after 27 minutes, they were playing with a numerical advantage. It was the exact opposite to the beginning of the second half, with a shaky school-boy defence that let in the first goal from a dead-ball situation, and then a second one far too easily. Two goals down, 11 v 10, with Milito and Pazzini together, the Nerazzurri rebelled: they fought and ran, despite the oppressive heat, and found two goals thanks to the Tuscan hit man, who nearly grabbed the winner with his last touch at the last second. In the end, the result was 2-2. Here is how it all unfolded.
First Half. Inter took to the pitch looking sharp in the new white away jersey from Nike. Zanetti was confirmed in the defensive back line. In attack was a line of Alvarez on the right, Milito central and Castaignos on the left. Olympiacos, the reigning Greek champions, lined up in a 4-2-3-1. After 3 minutes there was a diagonal combination from Cambiasso to Milito. 14 seconds later it happened again after high pressing from Cambiasso, then an exchange between Milito and Alvarez, who tried to advance, that was read by the opponents. This play showed what Gasperini is looking for: recovery of the ball, followed by immediate forward passing or movement up the flank. After 5 minutes the Nerazzurri's defence positioned itself in a line of four, with Zanetti as left-back, and Jonathan low on the right but pushing high, a move permitted by the opponents' tactics, as they played with their forwards out wide. The reply from Valverde's team was a high header from Modesto (which Inter allowed after giving away a free kick). It was a lovely contest, with Olympiacos always ready on the restart. In the 16th minute a quick triangular play put Castaignos (always determined on the left) alone in the box, only to be foiled by Costanzo. Five minutes later there was another rapid attack from the Nerazzurri when Obi won the ball and released Alvarez, who cut inside only to see his left-footer blocked. Milito continued to show good movement at the tip of the spear (as he did in the 25th minute when he was put through by Motta, for example). Then we saw exactly what is wanted by Gasperini, when Obi pressured Mellberg and drew a foul; the Olympiacos defender had previously been booked and this time he saw red for his challenge on the Nigerian workhorse. Now Inter were at a numerical advantage and thus went back to 3-4-3. After another 9 minutes of balanced action a combination between Motta, Milito and Alvarez in just a small patch of the pitch resulted in a clear chance for Inter, but the finish from Alvarez wasn't quite up to the task. There were more attacks coming from Inter's right flank involving Alvarez and Jonathan, who continued to show his mettle with his running, endurance and depth. One particular cross in the 39th minute saw Milito head just wide. Then just one minute later Thiago Motta rose to see his header climb over the crossbar on another excellent chance.
Second Half. The Nerazzurri had already suffered on the first free kick taken against them (at the far post). Then on the second one, from Julio Cesar's left, there was a repeat; after 60 seconds Feis slipped past everyone at the near post and put Olympiacos ahead for a mocking 1-0. And to think that everyone had been pondering the complete opposite, with Gasperini bringing on Pandev and Pazzini after halftime for a change to 4-4-2. Inter responded with an off-target shot from Chivu and a goal from Pandev that was wrongly disallowed for offside, which then resulted in another counterattack for the Greeks. Now 1-0 down, Gasperini's team was taking a bit of time to recover, but in the 63rd minute a cross-shot from Castaignos (on the right before his substitution) failed to find the right angle. In the 65th minute Pazzini found himself on the end of another dubious offside call after a pass from Obi. This was followed by a shot that went wide from Milito on a ball from Thiago Motta. But Inter were once again floored when Olympiacos doubled their lead through Modesto in the 68th minute; the attack came down the right side and Ranocchia's clearance went no further than the ex-Cagliari player, who placed his shot past Julio Cesar from the edge of the box: 0-2. There were more changes of players and formations (Santon wide on the left, and a decentralized Milito giving more support), and Inter still did not give up, urged on by Gasperini. On his first ball Faraoni sent Pazzini towards the goal; the young Nerazzurri full-back sent in a lovely low cross on the run, while the Tuscan forward timed his run to insert the ball at the near post: 2-1. One minute later Pazzini nearly had his brace, but his glanced header went straight to the opposing keeper. Then the match went into overdrive, with Inter looking for a draw and Olympiacos doing everything in their power to keep their advantage. It was a thrilling finish. And in the 44th minute Inter found their deserved equaliser. Cambiasso, on the ground, stabbed at a corner kick and kept it alive in the 6-yard box for Pazzini to strike like a cobra and volley the ball home to end the match at 2-2.
