Branca: "Less media limelight, more substance"

APPIANO GENTILE – After two days of press conferences unveiling Inter's latest signings, technical director Marco Branca answered some questions from journalists about the Nerazzurri's summer transfer business.

Now that it's all over, can you tell us if Wesley Sneijder will be happy to have stayed at Inter?
"I'm sure he is and I also believe there was interest in him. No offers, no negotiations with any clubs, but there was talk of interest being shown in him by another great club besides our own. I think the name I read most often was Manchester United. It's nice for him but it's also nice for us because it's proof of how good a player who belongs to our club is."

Was there never anything more than a chat with Carlos Tevez?
"If you think about the price quoted and confirmed on several occasions, €45 million, you should realise by yourselves that it was never going to happen."

Would it have been better to bring Kucka here straight away?
"No, he came to Italy last year and he hasn't played that many games in Serie A yet, so we're happy for him to continue playing for a good team like Genoa. It will help him settle in better and keep developing his physical and technical abilities. We're sure he'll be a better player next season than he is now."

How do you rate your summer transfer business overall? Are you satisfied?
"Being satisfied with your transfer business only counts up to a point because what really matters is being satisfied at the end of the season, so it's something we should assess then. We're certainly satisfied with the solutions we came up with and which followed the very clear guidelines we set ourselves."

Why Mauro Zarate and not Rodrigo Palacio?
"A technical choice, a question of opportunity and those guidelines we're following."

Generally speaking, would you say it was a fairly low-key transfer window?
"I think to a certain extent this transfer window signalled a defeat for our system, which doesn't depend on Inter, Milan, Juve, Roma or any of the other big teams. It's the system that holds us back and which makes it hard for us to compete in terms of generating income. It penalises us as clubs and of course you journalists often pass over that fact when writing about how all the big players are leaving Italy. I think we need to sound the alarm call because this is a very popular sport and I don't see why we should be penalising ourselves as a society when we know what needs to be done."

What's your reply to those who say Eto'o should have been sold at a much higher price?
"It you consider everything the Eto'o deal goes close to 100 million euros, because at the moment, unfortunately, we also have to calculate the costs no longer borne by the club. We're talking about a fantastic striker who is 30 years old and who, in footballing terms, nobody wanted to see leave and who, in footballing terms, would have preferred to keep playing on the big stage, for the Champions League and the Ballon d'Or, but he realised he had been offered this crazy contract. So as friends, as companions who achieved many victories together, we found a solution that was right for him and for us too. It's not so much Inter that wanted to sell him but a system which is lagging behind a bit."

Is it true that there were some problems between Marco Branca and president Moratti?
"No, no problem whatsoever."

Are those precise guidelines you mentioned earlier more a reference to the financial fair play regulations or the Italianisation of Inter's squad?
"Italianising our squad, in all honesty, has never been a major consideration for us, in the sense that we've always enjoyed, and always will enjoy, welcoming great talents to this club. But necessarily we have to be careful with wages because we're working with around 40% less income than other big European clubs, and I think it's essential for us to stay within certain parameters so that we can carry on taking part in the Champions League."

Do you have any regrets at the end of this transfer window or did you manage to achieve everything you wanted?
"We achieved everything we wanted."

Do you think that maybe you weren't given enough credit for the Zarate deal in the media, considering the terms of the agreement for a young, important player who has always performed well in Italy?
"That's fine by us. As a club we aren't particularly interested in the media limelight. We have millions of fans but we don't really follow the media's obsession with our game. We focus more on substance."

Press Office
