An excellent striking performance from Kevin Gameiro helped Lorient to a superb 5-1 success over erratic Girondins de Bordeaux in Ligue 1.
By the time the striker notched his opening goal of the game, Morgan Amalfitano had already deftly lobbed visiting goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso with the outside of his right boot. Gameiro was quick to race clear of the defence to add a second to his personal tally, and though Fernando swiftly pulled a goal back, Arnold Mvuemba added a fourth from the penalty spot after the hosts’ Franco Sosa had been dismissed.
A swift counterattack provided Christian Gourcuff’s exciting side with the opening goal of the game. Les Merlus sent a fine pass over the visiting defence, unhinging the rearguard totally and allowing Amalfitano to loft a wonderfully deft finish over Carrasso.
Little more than 10 minutes before the break they doubled their advantage. A long pass forward picked out Lynel Kitambala on the right flank, and his low cross was perfectly delivered to allow Gameiro a simple close range finish.
Soon afterwards, Gameiro found himself with the freedom of the Bordeaux half to tease Carrasso before rounding him and planting the ball into the empty net.
Some hope for the visiting side was restored when Fernando glanced a wonderfully crafted Jaroslav Plasil free kick into the corner of Fabien Audard’s goal, but this ultimately proved to be false.
On the hour mark Plasil became the villain when he handled a free kick from Franco Sosa while standing in the box. A penalty kick was the logical conclusion, and though Mvuemba blasted his effort high into the net, referee Antony Gautier disallowed the goal for encroachment, much to the ire of Sosa, who talked himself into the book for a second time and therefore saw red. Mvuemba had no problems converting at the second attempt.
Even with 10 men Lorient looked the more threatening side, and it came as little surprise when Gameiro sealed his hat-trick. More wonderfully conceived offensive play from les Merlus released Mathias Autret on the right hand side, and his low cross was easily tucked away by the unmarked in-form striker.
Carrasso saw red in stoppage time after deny Amalfitano a clear goal scoring opportunity, handling the ball outside his box after the midfielder had juggled it over his head brilliantly.
The nature of this defeat raises new questions over Jean Tigana’s tenure at the helm of Bordeaux. Having previously offered his resignation to the board, the former Besiktas coach will have been hugely disappointed to see the manner of this defeat, even if it came against a slick offensive unit at the peak of their powers. |
