Guaita 7.0
Show excellent agility to touch a Kluge header onto the crossbar, and throughout the young shot-stopper's handling was reliable and a calming presence. Blameless for Raul's goal, and made a vital save late on from Junmin Hao that could have killed the tie.
Jérémy Mathieu 6.5
Didn't get forward as often as Miguel on the opposite flank, but his one attack proved pivotal as his pinpoint near-post cross found Soldado unmarked to break the deadlock. A reliable figure in defence, keeping Farfan generally subdued.
David Navarro -  Flop of the Match - 5.0
The defender unfortunately never looks comfortable against quality attackers, and he was woefully short of pace when Raul skipped away from him to score. Not a night to remember.
Ricardo Costa 6.0
Better than his compatriot Navarro, but his distribution was suspect, and could not organise the defensive line into a tight unit, giving Schalke a chance to get in behind all to often.
Miguel 6.0
Put his recent personal problems behind him to produce an enterprising display from full-back, making himself an additional attacking option, but didn't close down Jurado quick enough in the build up to Raul's goal, and he drifted out of the game afterwards.
Mehmet Topal 6.5
The Turk looked composed and secure in the first half, comfortably breaking up play and feeding the likes of Banega and Costa, but looked slightly less dependable in the second as Kluge and Matip got the better of him.
Alberto Costa 6.0
Fired in a long range shot that Neuer did well to save, and set up an opening for Aduriz that the striker squandered, but other than that did not have impact on proceedings that his team would have liked.
Ever Banega 6.0
Worked hard as part of the midfield three, feeding the ball forward whenever possible, but was sacrificed after Schalke's equaliser for a more attacking option.
Roberto Soldado 7.0
A good evening for the former Real Madrid striker, who showed his striking instincts to sneak in between the Schalke centre halves to open the scoring. Faded later in the match but was Valencia's best attacking option by some distance.
Aritz Aduriz Zubeldia 5.5
Played on the left of the front three and although he was involved in the build-up to the goal, too often was wasteful when feeding the ball into the area, and scuffed a late chance well wide.
Alejandro Domínguez 6.5
A surprise starter in a 4-3-3 formation, but linked well with Aduriz and Soldado, switching with them seamlessly to create space, and can be pleased with his efforts. Replaced by Joaquin in the second half.
• Substitutions
Joaquín Sánchez Rodríguez 5.0
Came on to give an injection of pace but could not get heavily involved in the contest.
Vicente Rodríguez Guillén 5.0
Arrived into the fray when Schalke equalised, but his swift dribbling could not fashion a clear cut chance.
Jordi Alba 5.0
Replaced Mathieu at left-back for the closing stages of the contest.
Schalke 04
Manuel Neuer 6.5
Helpless at the opening goal, and apart from a comfortable save from a long range Tino Costa effort, had precious little to do in the way of blocking shots.
Lukas Schmitz 6.0
Didn't cope well with Dominguez and Miguel linking on the overlap in the first half, getting his name into the book, and was involved in an incident in the dying seconds that saw him pick up a second caution, meaning he will miss the second leg.
Christoph Metzelder 6.0
The German international couldn't handle Soldado's movement and ability to drop off play, but improved when the match went to 1-1, and helped guide his side to an important result.
Benedikt Höwedes 6.0
Struggled with the interchanging los Che top three in the first half, and was on occasion forced into rushed clearances, but was stable in the latter stages to get in some more important blocks.
Atsuto Uchida 6.5
Failed to track the run of Mathieu which led to the first goal, but recovered from that mistake well to negate the full-back's forward momentum, as well as getting forward himself.
Jurado 6.5
A relatively quiet evening for the former Atletico Madrid man on his return to Spain, but his contribution to Raul's goal was invaluable, laying a well-timed pass into the path of his compatriot.
Joel Matip 6.5
Like Kluge, barely got involved in the centre as Valencia held the ascendency, but grew into the game superbly and was key in halting the wave of attacks latte in the match.
Peer Kluge 6.5
Frustrated in this first half with his inability to get his foot on the ball, but came close to scoring with a looping header that Guaita had to tip onto the crossbar. Performed better in the second half, winning more tackles and keeping the ball better.
Jefferson Agustin Farfán 6.0
Didn't get involved in the match in an attacking sense as often as he would have liked, but his contribution tracking backwards was key to ensure that Valencia were given less space in the second half.
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar 5.0
The Dutch international missed a glorious opportunity early in the match, missing his kick from close range, and after that looked a player completely lost.
Raúl -  Top of the Match - 7.5
The script was written for the legendary striker to do damage against his fellow countrymen, and he duly obliged, turning perfectly in the area to slot the equaliser into the corner. A big influence on his team, particularly in the second half.
• Substitutions
Hao Junmin 5.0
Was given a golden opportunity to win the match in the last minute by was denied by a good save from Guaita.
Edu 4.5
Came on for the last five minutes to add fresh legs to the team.
Julian Draxler 5.0
The emerging talent came on in the closing stages to experience Champions League football. |
