Christian Abbiati 6.0
Replaced after 18 minutes after taking a blow to the head. He was tested in the air by balls into the box aimed for Peter Crouch and had a couple of collisions with the tall striker. The veteran 'keeper had mixed success at dealing with the crosses but was positive in coming for the ball.
Luca Antonini 5.5
Given a torrid time by Aaron Lennon in the first half, but better after the break.
Mario Alberto Yepes 6.0
Made an impact at the other end but his two headers were saved brilliantly by Gomes. Was exposed by Aaron Lennon's pace in the build up to Tottenham's goal.
Alessandro Nesta 6.5
Class personified on the deck, could do nothing on Crouch's goal.
Ignazio Abate 7.0
Got forward well down the right and learnt from his earlier mistakes by stopping Pienaar and Van der Vaart from getting balls into the box.
Mathieu Flamini 5.5
Showed there is no love lost between him and Spurs, from his Arsenal days, with a terrible two-footed lunge on Corluka. It was a red card offence and Flamini was very lucky to have stayed on the pitch. Struggled to assert his authority on the game.
Thiago Silva 6.0
The make-shift midfielder struggled in the face of constant Tottenham pressure. Whenever he received the ball he had Sandro and Palacios snapping in and around his heels not letting him settle.
Gennaro Ivan Gattuso 5.0
The 33-year-old did not fail to live up to his reputation as a hot-head. He was involved in a number of remarkable incidents which started with a shove on Tottenham assistant manager Joe Jordan. He then had a couple of clashes with Peter Crouch before finally being booked. His yellow card means he will miss the second leg. Very lucky to stay on the field.
Clarence Seedorf - Flop of the Match - 5.5
The former Dutch international looked sluggish up against his younger rivals in midfield and struggled for space. He did not do too much wrong in possession but he could not add the drive and dynamism to Milan's forward play. Replaced at half-time by Pato.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic 6.5
Did not figure at all in the first-half as his side were on the back foot but after the break he showed small glimpses of his talent, but the big Swede has had much better nights. Could have grabbed a late equaliser with a spectacular over-head kick which beat Gomes, but the goal was rightly ruled out for a push on Dawson.
Robinho 5.5
Failed to make any impact in the game and showed some really poor touches. Drifted in and out and Milan will expect much more from their £16.5 million pound signing in the second leg.

Marco Amelia 6.0
Brought on for an unexpected appearance after Abbiati had to come off with a head injury after 18 minutes. Tested early with a teasing cross but punched well away from danger. Only really tested by Van der Vaart's shot in the first-half but was called into action more in the second period. Given no chance by Crouch's finish.
Alexandre Pato 5.5
Came on at half-time to replace Clarence Seedorf to add some much needed urgency into Milan's attacking play, but barely touched the ball.
Gomes 8.0
Hardly tested in the first-half except for a cross by Abate which he plucked out of the air. Produced two stunning saves in the second half to deny Yepes what looked like certain goals.
Benoit Assou-Ekotto 6.0
Largely did okay, but was occasionally troubled by Abate's pace.
William Gallas 7.5
Hardly tested in the first-half as Milan struggled to get a grip on the game. Alongside Dawson the Frenchman was composed and he used his experience to help Tottenham claim the clean sheet.
Michael Dawson 8.0
The Tottenham captain was assured in defence and cleared everything that came his way. Not the testing evening he probably expected but he kept his concentration along with all his team-mates. Produced a great block in the dying seconds to deny Robinho.
Vedran Corluka 7.0
Solid performance in defence from the Croatian and when in possession he was quick to find Crouch with long range passes. His evening was cut short after being on the receiving end of Flamini's awful two-footed challenge.
Steven Pienaar 6.5
Preferred on the left to Niko Kranjcar and did the job Harry Redknapp asked him to do. Tracked back well to help out Assou-Ekotto to provide excellent defensive cover. Did not have the impact going forward he would have liked but worked hard with and without the ball for his side. Replaced by Kranjcar.
Sandro 7.0
Assured performance from the Brazilian. he is starting to show everyone why Harry Redknapp did his utmost to bring him to White Hart Lane. Always willing to receive the ball and passed the ball efficiently to get his side moving forward. Also shielded his defence well alongside Palacios.
Wilson Palacios 6.5
He closed down Milan's midfielders and forwards very quickly. Shielded the defence superbly. Given more to think about when Pato came on at half-time but stayed in position and broke up play.
Aaron Lennon - Top of the Match - 7.5
Very lively performance on the right from the England winger. He terrorised Antonini with his pace and got past him at nearly every attempt. Tottenham's number seven reminded everyone of the talents he possesses with his run from the half-way line and used his pace to beat Yepes. He then had the composure to roll the ball to Crouch for Tottenham's goal.
Rafael Van der Vaart 6.5
Tottenham looked to get their Dutch playmaker on the ball at every opportunity and when he got his opportunity he did not disappoint. He showed some magical skills in the first-half and was always a threat with his vision and first time passing. Threatened the replacement goalkeeper with a couple of long range efforts and a delicate chip which had the 'keeper beaten all ends up and only just sailed past the post. Replaced by Luka Modric after 62 minutes.
Peter Crouch 7.0
Was Tottenham's main target when they won the ball. The England striker looked to pull away to the far post at every opportunity and won his fair share of balls in the air. Run himself into the ground for the Tottenham cause and was rewarded with the vital goal.
• Substitutions
Jonathan Woodgate 6.5
Brought on for his first taste of first-team action as a second-half replacement for the injured Corluka. Made one important block on a shot from Robinho.
Niko Kranjcar 6.0
Given 15 minutes to try and break the deadlock and Spurs did manage to get the goal they so craved while he was on the field, but this time he wasn't involved.
Luka Modric 6.5
Struggled to get into the game after being out for the past two weeks with injury but will be better for the 30 minutes on the field.
