Tottenham return to the stage of one of the finest (second-half) performances in their history, as they head back to San Siro to take on AC Milan in the first knockout round of the UEFA Champions League.
Spurs' 4-3 defeat to Milan's city rivals Inter in the group stages was a bittersweet occasion as they lost, but showed fortitude to win the second-half 3-0 thanks to a Gareth Bale hat-trick, having gone four down to the reigning European champions inside 35 minutes. However, they face an altogether different task against the red half of Milan and find themselves up against a side reinvigorated under new coach Massimiliano Allegri.
With the summer purchases of Robinho and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Milan have returned to the top of Italian football and lead the league, while also sealing progress in Europe behind a commanding Real Madrid side in Group G. Boasting Italy's best defence, and joint-best attack, the Rossoneri are in fine shape for the game, although will not be allowed to field new signing Mark van Bommel as he is cup-tied.
Meanwhile, Spurs have found a resilient streak of late, but are struggling to come to terms with the injury-enforced absences of key players like Gareth Bale and Rafael van der Vaart. Bale is definitely missing for the Milan clash and manager Harry Redknapp's natural inclination to attack could come at a cost without his main men.
Tottenham have scored a joint-competition-high 18 goals in the Champions League this season, but have also shown a propensity to let them in at the other end. Yet if Spurs need to take comfort in statistics, they can be buoyed by the fact that Milan have won none of their past five matches in European competition against English opposition and have been knocked out at this stage by an English team in the last two seasons.
AC Milan player to watch: Robinho. Virtually unrecognisable from the player who wandered around the pitch forlorn at the end of his days at Manchester City, Robinho has reinvented himself in Milan. With Ronaldinho gone, Milan's ageing squad look to the forward for creativity and pace down the flanks and his nine goals in 22 games so far this season - with two coming from off the bench against Parma at the weekend - is a decent return. Running with the ball at his feet, there are few better in the world game and Spurs' defence will have to pay close attention to his tricks.
Tottenham player to watch: Niko Krancjar. Two spectacular strikes in two games have elevated the Croatian midfielder into contention after he looked likely to leave the club in search of regular football in January. A classy performer with excellent technique and good vision, Krancjar has come to the fore of late in the absence of the usual creative forces in Spurs' midfield: Rafael van der Vaart and Luka Modric. With doubts remaining over the duo's fitness, Krancjar could be called upon again to provide inspiration in the final third.
Key battle 关键战: Zlatan Ibrahimovic v Michael Dawson. AC Milan coach Allegri may have been going a tad overboard when he claimed last week that Ibrahimovic was on a par with Barcelona's Lionel Messi, but the Swedish striker has certainly proved that he is back to his best after a poor spell at Camp Nou. With 13 goals and ten assists coming from his 23 games thus far, Ibrahimovic's time in Milan has been an unqualified success and their rise to the top of the Serie A table is largely down to his influence. As an international defender of rising potential, Dawson's ability to stop the striker will be tested to the limits. His place in the side for the capitulations against Young Boys and Fulham this season means his confidence is shaken, but he should be well placed to counter Ibrahimovic's physical style as long as he is not pulled out of position. 米兰中锋伊布 pk 热刺后卫迈克尔道森
Trivia 花絮: Spurs and Milan previously met in the 1971-72 UEFA Cup semi-final where Tottenham won the home leg and drew away to progress to the final.
Stats 统计: Peter Crouch has scored three goals from just five shots on target in the Champions League this season, while Harry Redknapp's side have scored with 28% of their goal attempts, the best percentage in the competition. Milan have the worst disciplinary record in the Champions League, picking up 17 yellow cards. 热刺打门和进球率有优势。米兰吃了17张黄牌。
Odds 赔率: AC Milan (1.70), Spurs (5.00) and the draw (3.75) are on offer at bet365, but Niko Krancjar to score anytime comes in at 6.00. 看赔率,米兰赢面大
Prediction 预测: Spurs have confidence and are relishing their chance on the big stage, but Milan's experience should see them win this encounter. 米兰欧战经验,胜过热刺的自信心 |
