BOSELLI - THE FIRST INTERVIEW Posted on: Wed 30 Jun 2010
New signing hungry to get Latics career underway and make fans proud
Now, after the departure of Paul Scharner this summer one of the club's more iconic terrace chants of 'He comes from Austria, he's now a Wiganer!', will be sadly missed.
However surely there's an opportunity to resurrect the ditty in homage to our new striker Mauro Boselli?
Perhaps something along the lines of;
'Boselli whooooh, Boselli whoooo-oooh, He's from Argentina, he's now a Wiganer!'?
We'll wait and see if it catches on but for the meantime we spoke exclusively to the Argentine hit man shortly after joining the club on what it feels like to have become Wigan Athletic's latest signing;
"I'm excited and can't wait to start training with my new team-mates soon," said Boselli.
"I want to thank everybody at the club for making the move possible and for being so welcoming, a lot of effort has gone into the transfer and I'm very grateful for that.
"To be honest I wish we could start tomorrow.
"Everything Roberto (Martinez) said about the club and English football helped a great deal and made me realise that this was the right move for me.
"He wanted me here to play and enjoy my football in Wigan, which means a lot to me.
"In Argentina fans appreciate a player who plays with passion, and from what I've seen it's the same in England. Hopefully I can make the fans proud of the work I do on the pitch for them and for the team."
The striker also revealed that he was given wise words from both ends about the move, consulting former Estudiantes team-mate, and Argentine international midfielder Juan Veron about English football;
"Juan played for Manchester United and Chelsea and has good knowledge of the English game.
"He told me it was the best place in the world to play your football and that it would be the best place for me as a player."
After a two-year spell with the Argentine giants, 81 appearances and 44 goals, the 25-year-old admitted that whilst it was with a heavy heart that he left Estudiantes, he knows that he has made the right choice joining Latics;
He said; "Of course leaving Estudiantes was a difficult decision, but it was the right move for all parties.
"I had a fantastic relationship with the fans and people at the club, who will always have a special place in my heart.
"I would like to thank them, the Manager Alejandro Sabella, and everyone associated with Estudiantes for the past two years.
"Without them I wouldn't be the player I am or have this fantastic opportunity, I'm forever grateful to them."
Now Boselli can look forward to life at Wigan Athletic and in the Premier League, and already has a bit of background knowledge and experience ahead of his first season with the club;
"People may not know that I've actually already played at Old Trafford back in 2004 for Boca Juniors.
"It was part of a pre-season friendly tournament we were invited to and against PSV I actually scored there as well.
"It turned out to be the winning goal in the end because the game was called off due to bad weather after 70 minutes!
"Also, I'd heard of Wigan Athletic before, I've followed the Premier League for a long time and see it as the best in the world, and I'm very excited to get the opportunity to play in such a fantastic league.
"I've played against Hugo Rodallega back in 2005 when Argentina Under-20's took on Columbia Under-20's.
"He was a fantastic player then and has got even better since, and I can't wait to play in the same team as him here at Wigan Athletic.
"Of course I've seen a lot of action back in Argentina so know players such as Charles N'Zogbia, who is a very exciting player, and also Maynor Figueroa who has done very well playing in England.
"Back home we got to see his amazing goal last season against Stoke City, it was unbelievable.
"It actually reminded me of a goal I scored myself in my first game for Estudiantes against Rosario Central."
