FC Porto: The end of an era? http://www.portugoal.net/index.php/more-opinion-articles/8811-fc-porto-the-end-of-an-era All the cards came crashing down this Sunday night for Porto as they fell 3-0 to a Benfica side that won their second consecutive Carlsberg Cup in the Algarve. But the comprehensive manner of the defeat leads to a deeper question. Is the club that has dominated the league for the last decade coming to the end of its glory days, to be replaced by their bitterest of rivals? After failing to land silverware to bring a high note to their disappointing season, Porto now face the worst-case scenario of witnessing their greatest rivals add the league and possibly the Europa League titles to their trophy cabinet. The tumultuous collapse commenced before the season even took charge, with the likes of Lucho Gonzalez, Lisandro Lopez and Cissokho all being transferred out of Porto in the summer of 2009. Porto did their best to replace this considerable talent, but teams aren’t built overnight. And Porto’s overall strength diminished in quality. Heart & Soul Lucho Gonzalez, El Comandante, was the heart and soul of the club and one of the reasons behind Porto’s four-year championship run as he dominated the midfield with such aplomb. After his transfer to Marseille, and even with Ruben Micael coming in as replacement in the January transfer window, his leadership and intelligence has been sorely missed in the middle of the pitch. Also, Lisandro Lopez’s tenacious forward running and goalscoring prowess disappeared along with the absence of Hulk for most of the season. Who knows how many points Porto lost due to the off-field drama that kept Hulk and Sapunaru away from the pitch for months. Counting on Falcao to produce most of the goals was always asking for trouble, especially in his first year as a Porto player. Since Orlando Sa and Ernesto Farias did not have regular playing time, Porto’s lacklustre attack has been evident to most as they struggled to score goals on a consistent basis. Porto’s season came crashing down in humiliating losses against Sporting, Arsenal and Benfica, as late season injuries to Varela and Mariano put the last nail in the coffin for the Dragons. Formidable squad Benfica couldn’t have picked a better time to yield a comeback to their winning ways. Rui Costa has slowly built a mighty armada of players that is currently wreaking havoc in the Liga Sagres and beyond. The signings of Saviola, Javi Garcia, and Ramires, combined with the “coming of age” of players such as David Luiz, Di Maria and Fabio Coentrao, has proved to be a lethal combination in their domination of the Portuguese league season, notwithstanding Braga’s outstanding efforts to keep pace with the Eagles. Porto fans should be grateful for what Porto has produced over the last decade. Winning the Champions League, UEFA Cup, and six league titles was a mammoth task. On the other hand, the humiliation this season was neither expected nor should it be tolerated by the supporters. Such a turnaround in fortunes explains Bruno Alves’s frustration on the pitch last Sunday night. Before he was ushered off the field at half time, he held four taunting fingers in the air, reminding the Benfica supporters about FC Porto’s era of domination of four straight league titles. Pinto da Costa will most definitely dive into the transfer market this summer to attempt to rekindle the magic. It remains to be seen whether or not 2009/10 has truly marked a shift in the power base of Portuguese football from the Estadio do Dragao to the Estadio da Luz. by Ricardo Costa
