Villarreal's new signing Roberto Fabián Ayala has praised the team's performance last season after they recovered to earn a place in Europe. The Argentinian agreed to move to El Madrigal on a free transfer from Valencia and believes that he made the right choice. Speaking from Argentina's Copa América base in Venezuela the experienced central defender is relishing the prospect of playing for the Yellow Submarine next term. "I take my hat off to them," Ayala said. "It is not easy to win consecutive matches in the league and it proves the quality that is in the squad. "Villarreal are writing a memorable page in their history as they have done very well in recent seasons, in particular in reaching the semi finals of the Champions League. "All the players that are there want to play there and that shows how much they appreciate the club. "The team did exceptionally well to bounce back after what was not a great start and to end up qualifying for the UEFA Cup. "They were only four points away from the Champions League in the end. Ayala recognised the effort that Villarreal put into prising him away from Valencia and wants to repay that when he joins the club later in the summer. "They have placed a lot of faith in me and I hope to be able to live up to the expectations," he continued. "It is a club that has everything that I like and it is just what I need at this stage in my career. "I hope to be able to show the club and the fans what I can do. After his move to Villarreal became public in February, Ayala had his commitment to Valencia questioned, but he denies that he ever stopped focussing on helping los Ché. "I am a professional and my duty was to help Valencia, but I am not going to deny that I kept an eye on how my next team was doing," he joked.
