 APPIANO GENTILE - Adriano, scorer of two goals in the friendly match against Bahrain at the National Stadium in Manama, gave the following interview to Inter Channel after Sunday morning's training session:

You ended 2006 with a goal against Atalanta, and started 2007 with two against the Bahrain national team. So has something really changed?
"Let's hope so... I'm relaxed and I'm working very hard with the team. I have to continue to work, and not talk that much, so I can show I'm still a great player."

With your long goal drought, was 2006 the most difficult period of your career?
"Strikers live for goals, everything becomes harder when they don't come. I hadn't scored for nine months, I went through a difficult time psychologically. But I was calm and knew things would change sooner or later. I now hope to do well in 2007, like I have shown I can do in the previous years at Inter. I'm calm and focused because I want to do many good things with Inter."

Was the week you spent in Brazil useful to start work to get back to being the player we all admired before?
"I had a good time with my family and sorted everything out. I also sorted my mind out, it was a time during which I wasn't appreciating my family, and the most important thing for a player, and every person, is their own family. So I'm very happy because I returned with the right mind. This year I want to and can show what I'm capable of doing for the team."

After the Atalanta match you thanked Massimo Moratti, Roberto Mancini, all your team-mates and all those who were behind you at the most difficult times. And the fans have never lacked affection for you. How important was their help?
"The fans are clearly very important for us. At difficult times it's them who transmit to you the desire and determination to do a bit extra. The Inter fans are always with the team and this is very important. I have always said that Inter is like a second home for me, and I really am pleased with this affection from the fans. I will have to do more for them as well this year, maybe by scoring a lot of goals so they can be even happier."

There can always be difficult moments, but have you understood what you did wrong?
"Yes. I am a normal person, and every normal person makes mistakes. I made many mistakes, but you always learn from them. I'm still young and I still have a lot to learn. I have great responsibility on and off the pitch, so making mistakes has been of use to me, and I hope I don't make any more now."

Roberto Mancini has never lacked confidence in you, and has helped you tactically. Has this been of use?
"Yes, he has helped me a lot. I sometimes got angry with him, maybe because I thought I was right. I could have been right in some moments, but I must always be ready to listen a lot, particularly to someone like him, who was a strong player, has lots of experience, and can help me a lot. I still have many things to learn, I wasn't born perfect... I now hope I can do a lot for the coach, Moratti and the team. To do a lot of good things, it's important for me to be calm."

Which of Massimo Moratti's words have pleased you most?
"The fact that he has always had confidence in me. He always said he was convinced that this period would soon end. I now want to show him that I am above all a man. He wanted me at Inter when I arrived from Brazil and when I returned from Parma, and I want to repay this great faith he has always had in me. I can give a lot more to this team, I want to work very hard, and with my team-mates I want to take the team as far as possible."

Is this the strongest Inter team you have played in?
"Yes, we have many champions. We can aim for the Scudetto and the Champions League."

Were you pleased to discover you are one of the most-loved players in Bahrain?
"Yes, it's nice to see people in another country who love you and do anything for a hug. This is really important for me."

 EMPOLI - Inter take a two-goal lead into next week's Tim Cup quarter-final return leg with Empoli after a 2-0 victory at the Stadio Castellani.

The Nerazzurri dominated for long stretches of their first competitive fixture of the new year as Adriano started 2007 as he ended 2006, with a well-taken second-half goal to give further confirmation he's returning to his best.

Substitute Ivan Cordoba headed in the second in added time to give Inter a comfortable cushion ahead of next Wednesday's clash at the Meazza.

Luis Figo had a goal ruled out on 21 minutes after his indirect free sailed over the Empoli rearguard, out of Bassi's reach and into the left corner.

Mancini's men went close again twenty minutes later when Patrick Vieira had a header cleared off the line by Marzoratti after Bassi's one-handed clearance from an Adriano cross.

Right on the stroke of half time Zlatan Ibrahimovic tested the Empoli custodian with a crisp left-foot shot from inside the Tuscan box.

Francesco Toldo was rarely troubled in the opening period as the Empoli strikers failed to capitalise on a series of decent balls into his area.

Inter stepped up a gear after the restart, producing chance after chance. Adriano sidefooted wide an Ibrahimovic low cross before Vieira had a near range effort blocked by Bassi after receiving from Adriano.

Ibra then had a close-range shot hooked clear by Vanigli before Matteini sent a curler just wide after a quick one-two involving Marianini and Buzzegoli.

The inevitable breakthrough came on 71 minutes when Adriano (who ended his goal drought against Atalanta in the last game before the Christmas break, and added two more in the friendly match against Bahrain) ran on to Ibrahimovic's pin-point through ball before lobbing the onrushing Bassi.

Adriano was denied a second soon after by Bassi, who pushed the Brazilian's bullet header from Figo's free kick on to the post.

Empoli's best chance of an equaliser fell to Gasparetto, who outjumped Cordoba to head narrowly over Toldo's crossbar. The Colombian defender made amends in added time, rising in the Tuscan box to send a looping header from Mariano Gonzalez' cross over Bassi and into the back of the net.

 MILAN - Inter's Ragazzi che Stadio! initiative made its debut on 3 March 2004 when the Nerazzurri faced Sochaux in the UEFA Cup. Since then, thousands of young members of the various Inter Campus affiliate clubs, Inter football schools and local sports associations have watched Inter in European and domestic cup action for free as part of the club's project to 'train' and educate the fans of tomorrow.

Ragazzi che Stadio! continues tomorrow evening at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, with over 6,000 youngsters between the age of eight sixteen to watch Roberto Mancini's team in Tim Cup quarter-final second-leg action against Empoli.

 MILAN - Massimo Moratti gave a brief interview to journalists outside the Saras offices after his meeting with Roberto Mancini. The Inter president said: "It was a worthwhile meeting. Everything is okay. We confirmed the mutual respect. We just met to understand what the future plans are. We spoke about future organisation and the future of the team, and the confidence in certain players rather than others. However, there's so much confidence in the present squad that every project is based on young players. Another project is to look for Italian players for the Primavera team to be strong in the future and comply with UEFA regulations and have a few more Italians in the team. It's a matter of coordination between Mancini and the academy, but this is something he does constantly."

 MILAN - Esteban Cambiasso and Fabio Grosso scored in either half as Inter registered a 2-0 win over Empoli at the Meazza to complete a 4-0 aggregate victory and set up a Tim Cup semi-final meeting with Sampdoria.

After a sluggish start the game came alive on 28 minutes when Santiago Solari picked out Mariano Gonzalez on the right with a deft touch of the ball. The ex-Palermo winger's fast cross into the area was met at the back post by Cambiasso who lashed home from a tight angle to finish off the Argentine combination and put Inter in front.

Empoli forward Mirco Gasparetto wasted a golden opportunity to bring Empoli level two minutes later, blasting against the bar from the penalty spot after Dacourt brought down Eder to end a mazy run by the Brazilian.

Grosso twice went close to increasing Inter's lead before the break, shaving the post with a low right-foot shot from just inside the area before seeing a powerful free kick finish inches wide of the post via a deflection off Cambiasso.

It was third time lucky for the Italian full-back, who doubled Inter's lead on 77 minutes with a sweetly-struck left-footer that sailed into the top left corner.

Jonathan Ludovic Biabiany and Sebastian Ribas, two of seven Inter Primavera players drafted into Mancini's squad for the cup clash, came on during the second half to make their first-team debuts. Both strikers were presented scoring chances in the final minutes.
