Guille scored 5 winners, committed 17 unforced errors and 3 double faults in his debut against Safin.
Oh yes, it is Magic time again. After more than four months out of the courts, El Mago returned to the ATP Tour in Houston at the Master Cup. And even though he lost to Russian Marat Safin in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-4, that didn't matter. What it mattered is that he is that he is back!
Again, this time the result is not as important as have seen Guille playing tennis with no pain at all. As expected, he was sloppy and off rhythm, but he did show some of his old stuff in the second set.
In the initial set, was no surprise that El Mago looked very cautious when serving. And as expected too, Safin didn't give him any chance, and jumped right ahead by breaking Guille's service in the second game. He did it again in the sixth and wrapped up the set in the next game.
Guille connected his first ace "with his new shoulder" to go ahead 15-0 in the seventh game of the second set. Even Safin smiled when Guille raised his arms in celebration. He knew that Willy could put up al the fight he wanted, but his victory was no at risk at all.
El Mago will now face the loser of the match between American Andy Roddick and English Tim Henman, seeking for a victory that would keep his chances of reaching the semifinals alive. That is if he plays it...
Cold numbers said that Guille lost in a little bit more than one hour, scored just 5 winners -0 in the first set-, committed 17 unforced errors and 3 double faults.
What those numbers don't said is that Guille accomplished his goal of coming back this year when from his injury when everybody thought that his 2004 season was over.
And they don't say that he had earned the right to be in Houston among the best eight players of the world either...
But Guille, his people and all his fans knew those things. That is why this match against Safin was so important. Welcome back, Guille: It so nice to have you in a tennis court again!
