Tevez's free-kick curls past the helpless dive of Oscar Ibanez
Argentina knocked hosts Peru out of the quarter-finals of the Copa America thanks to a stunning free-kick from
20-year-old Carlos Tevez.
Tevez silenced a partisan 25,000 crowd in Chiclayo with his first international goal three minutes after coming on
for Andres d'Alessandro.
Argentina captain Roberto Ayala was sent off for a second bookable offence after 82 minutes but the team held
on.
Argentina will meet Colombia in the semis after they beat Costa Rica 2-0.
Peru appeared to miss injured striker Claudio Pizzaro and their best chances came immediately after the goal.
Nolberto Solano crashed a free-kick against the crossbar and Roberto Palacios side-footed wide a seemingly
unmissable chance.
Argentina coach Marcelo Bielsa said he was not sure he had done the right thing when he sent Tevez on.
"When I made the change, I had my doubts," he said. "I thought the team was in its best part of the game and I
wasn't sure it was in our best interests - but I went ahead and did it anyway."
Peru assisant coach Victor Zegarra said: Our only problem was that we didn't score." |
