Bielsa celebrates in Piura

In an action-packed game, in which the coaches were the standouts, Argentina beat bitter rivals Uruguay 4-2 and ended
the first phase of Copa America as runners-up, with 6 points, and face Peru in the quarterfinals. Despite the defeat,
Uruguay are still in contention, but depend on the results of the matches between Brazil X Paraguay and Chile X Costa
Rica.

The first half of the fiercest derby in the world, with a total of 194 clashes, lived up to tradition. With chances from both
sides, violent plays and goals galore, Uruguay went ahead with a quality strike from Fabian Estoyanoff, on 7 minutes.
Dissatisfied with the loss to Mexico, Marcelo Bielsa fielded Argentina without striker Saviola. So, Argentina had to count
on the offensive moves of right-winger Luis Gonzalez. In one of his plays, he was bundled in the box and Killy Gonzales
duly converted the spotkick. While the Uruguayans were still trying to recover from the blow, Luciano Fugueroa
(Saviola's replacement) pounced on keeper Luis Barbat's rebound and turned the game around. On 34 minutes, after a
crude challenge, Uruguayan defender Joe Bizera received his second booking and was given his marching orders. Despite
being a man down, Uruguayan grit came to the fore and Vicente Sanchez leveled the scores to make it 2 apiece after a
counterattack.

After the break, coach Jorge Fossati change his side, strengthening his defensive system by closing his ranks. Uruguay
marked well, and keeper Barbat made important saves, as in strikes by Figueroa, on 63 minutes, and Luis Gonzalez, on
77. In order to breach Fossati's blockade, Marcelo Bielsa fielded Carlos Tevez, Mariano Gonzales and ... Saviola. His
replacements paid dividends and on 80 minutes, Ayala beat the Uruguayan defenders to put Argentina back in front. The
Celeste, playing in red, succumbed and after a pass by Tevez, Figueroa bagged a brace and sealed Argentina's 14th win
against Uruguay in the history of Copa America.

Argentina 4-2 Uruguay

Luciano Figueroa scored his first two international goals as Argentina beat 10-man Uruguay 4-2 in the Copa
America.

Fabian Estoyanoff volleyed Uruguay ahead after seven minutes before a Cristian Gonzalez penalty and a Figueroa shot
put Argentina ahead.

Uruguay defender Joe Bizera was sent off for a second bookable offence before his teammate Vicente Sanchez equalised
with a wicked 25-yard effort.

Captain Roberto Ayala's header and Figueroa settled matters for Argentina.

Both Group B teams had already qualified for the quarter-finals.


Mexico 2-1 Ecuador

A good performance from forward Adolfo Bautista helped Mexico to top spot in Group B and in turn eliminate Ecuador
from the Copa America.

Hector Altamarino gave Mexico the lead after Bautista was tripped by Ecuador goalkeeper Jacinto Espinoza.

Bautista then doubled his side's lead three minutes before half-time when he fired home a 25-yard effort.

Ecuador reduced the deficit in the 71st minute when Agustin Delgado headed home a cross from substitute Franklin
Salas.

In its poorest performance of the tournament, the national team beat Uruguay 4-2 with two goals in the last 10
minutes and advanced to the quarterfinals against Peru, which will be held next Saturday; the goalscorers were Figueroa
(2), Ayala, and a penalty by Kily González.

PIURA, Peru. It took the captain to straighten out a team without any sense of direction. For want of football solutions,
Ayala rose like a marshal to head the ball from a corner kick by D'Alessandro. Their reputation was dealt a blow as they
grabbed victory by escaping through the cracks of Argentina's worse performance in the Copa America. The 4:2 success
was sealed in the end with a second goal by Figueroa, but it still did not change the impression of a fading performance
by the national team.

Having reached second in the Group B qualifying round, they now await the home team Peru in the quarterfinals next
Saturday...

The only thing worth mentioning [in the first half] was Uruguay's first goal, because the Uruguayans started better and
put much more into the game than Argentina, who entered the game too passively, lacked presence, and often yielded
the ball. Inspired and determined, Uruguay went ahead after 7 minutes, with a superb goal by Estoyanoff...

Again, as against Mexico, they were at a disadvantage from very early on. But they didn't react by playing football or
showing any good moves. There was neither accuracy nor focus. D'Alessandro retained too much of the ball and exposed
himself to too many fouls; Lucho González made more wrong than right guesses. There was no one who could bring the
team forward, so that the first 15 minutes were their worse quarter of an hour in the Copa America.

But football is full of paradoxes and mysteries. As in other games, Argentina did not make a difference with their best
playing and merits, and this time they went ahead by doing almost nothing positive. In two minutes, they levelled the
score, yet their actions suggested otherwise.

Lago mistimed his run and committed a penalty foul on Delgado, which was converted by Kily González, who has turned
into something of a penalty specialist in recent games.

Right afterwards, Argentina had a second goal in a game of errors and imperfections as Delgado was thrown into the
centre; Lucho González messed up a strike and the ball hit Barbat, who didn't hold onto it. Figueroa took advantage of
the rebound at the mouth of the goal. He reacted like someone surprised to be even appearing in the team, since Saviola
had been the only first-team player confirmed by Bielsa the previous day.

This was the moment when Argentina settled down and had more confidence in the game. It was mainly because
Uruguay was rather uncontrolled and appealed against various fouls, with Kily González and D'Alessandro as the main
targets. In fact, they gave Kily a bandaged nose. But the national team didn't know how to escape this rough
atmosphere; not because they reacted to the aggression, but because their football was dormant, without any flow.

Bizera, who had already been cautioned over a foul on D'Alessandro, was then sent off amid protests. Argentina had
another positive signal after 34 minutes, but it was immediately cancelled out: A fluffed clearance by Heinze and a
rebound off Ayala's head fell at the feet of Sanchez, who levelled the score from outside the penalty area. Abbondanzieri
failed to arrive in time as usual. Whether it was their own bad luck or the good luck of their rivals, one thing for certain is
that Uruguay had 100 percent effectiveness in its two shots at goal in the first half.

With few ideas and depth, Argentina won the game. Apart from Uruguay's predictable defensive play, they had to
struggle againt their own lack of surprises and options. Besides their will and persistence, a few more positive aspects
could be seen in Bielsa's line-up. There were a couple of shots parried by Kily, a header by Figueroa which was blocked by
Barbat, and a high right shot by Lucho inside the box, who then went off injured after twisting his ankle. The dismal
scene was cleared with a saving header by Ayala. Things looked up with the part played by Figuero. Argentina's win was
down to the result rather than their overall performance.

En su actuación más floja en el torneo, el seleccionado, con dos goles en los últimos 10 minutos, superó a Uruguay
por 4 a 2 y avanzó a los cuartos de final, etapa en la que el sábado próximo se enfrentará con Perú; marcaron Figueroa
(2), Ayala y el Kily González, de penal

PIURA, Perú.- Tuvo que aparecer el capitán para enderezar a un equipo sin rumbo. A falta de respuestas futbolísticas,
Ayala se levantó como un mariscal para conectar de cabeza el córner de D?Alessandro. Fue un golpe de autoridad para
atrapar una victoria que se escapaba por las grietas de la peor actuación de la Argentina en la Copa América. El éxito por
4 a 2 se amplió en el final con el segundo tanto de Figueroa, pero igual no varía el concepto sobre el destenido
rendimiento del seleccionado.

Superada la etapa clasificatoria como segundo en el Grupo B, ahora le espera el local Perú, el sábado próximo, por los
cuartos de final.

Además de ser cortado y friccionado, el primer tiempo tuvo un desarrollo insólito. Marcado por los imprevisibles vaivenes
en el marcador, por las alteraciones que hubo a contracorriente de lo que ocurría en el campo. Lo único que se puede
citar dentro de la lógica fue el primer gol de Uruguay, porque los charrúas empezaron mejor, mucho más metidos en el
partido que la Argentina, que entró demasiado pasiva, sin presencia y cediendo la pelota. Inspirado y decidido, Uruguay se
puso en ventaja a los 7 minutos, con un golazo de Estoyanoff, que cruzó un derechazo tras un despeje de cabeza de
Figueroa.

Otra vez, como ante México, se veía en desventaja desde muy temprano. Pero la reacción no fue con fútbol ni con un
buen funcionamiento. No había precisión ni claridad. D?Alessandro retenía demasiado la pelota y se exponía mucho a los
golpes; Lucho González se equivocaba más de lo que acertaba. No había quien sacara adelante al equipo, que en los
primeros 15 minutos completó su peor cuarto de hora en la Copa América.

Pero el fútbol está lleno de paradojas y misterios. Así como en otros partidos la Argentina no marcó las diferencias por su
mejor juego y merecimientos, esta vez pasaba al frente sin haber hecho casi nada positivo. En dos minutos dio vuelta el
marcador cuando las acciones no sugerían semejante vuelco.

Lago llegó a destiempo y le cometió un penal a Delgado, convertido por el Kily González, transformado en los últimos
cotejos en un repentino especialista en estas ejecuciones.

Enseguida, la Argentina consiguió el segundo gol en una jugada llena de errores e imperfecciones desde que Delgado
lanzó el centro; Lucho González pifió la definición y la pelota llegó hasta Barbat, que no la retuvo y dio un rebote
aprovechado por Figueroa en la boca del arco. Así respondía el hombre que sorprendió a todos al aparecer en el equipo, ya
que el único titular que había confirmado Bielsa el día anterior había sido Saviola.

Era el momento para que la Argentina se serenara y tomara confianza en el juego. Sobre todo porque Uruguay se
descontroló un poco y apeló a varios golpes y faltas fuertes, con el Kily González y D?Alessandro como principales
destinatarios. De hecho, al Kily le colocaron un apósito en la nariz. Pero el seleccionado no supo evadirse de ese clima
brusco; no porque respondiera a las agresiones, sino porque su fútbol seguía dormido, sin vuelo.

Dio la impresión de que Uruguay tiraba todo por la borda cuando Bizera, ya amonestado por foul a D?Alessandro, se fue
expulsado por protestar. Iban 34 minutos y la Argentina recibía otra senal positiva, que se diluyó enseguida, con esa
facilidad para complicarse que tanto le cuesta erradicar: se equivocó Heinze en una salida y un rechazo de cabeza de
Ayala cayó en los pies de Sánchez, que empató desde afuera del área, con un Abbondanzieri que no llega como imagen
repetida. Fatalidad propia o virtud del rival, lo cierto es que Uruguay tuvo un 100 por ciento de efectividad en sus dos
tiros al arco en el primer tiempo.

Con pocas ideas y profundidad, la Argentina fue por el triunfo. Además del previsible cerrojo uruguayo, tuvo que luchar
contra su falta de sorpresa y variantes. Más allá de las intenciones y de la insistencia, pocos aspectos más positivos se le
podían senalar al conjunto de Bielsa. Hubo un par de disparos apenas desviados del Kily, un cabezazo de Figueroa que
rechazó Barbat y un derechazo alto de Lucho adentro del área, tras lo cual el volante salió lesionado al torcerse un tobillo.
El sombrío panorama se despejó con el cabezazo salvador de Ayala. Un respiro que se hizo alivio con el cuarto de
Figueroa. El paso al frente de la Argentina fue más en el resultado que en la producción general.
