RIVER
Thanks for everything
Spartak put up more cash and have taken Cavenaghi. El Torito trained yesterday with the team and left when the
sale was done. He's going overseas!
MARTIN BLOTTO and FEDERICO DEL RIO, OLE 2004.07.13
River's goleador is finally leaving to play in Russia.
The goals, the subtle definitions, the quality touch which ends each game is going away. Another of little gem of the club,
another fruit from an exquisite source is going away. Adored by the fans, the soft spot of adolescent fans, the most public
face of the squad is going away. Fernando Cavenaghi is leaving, el Torito ["little bull"] to the footballing world, el Gordo
["Fatso"] to his friends in River, el Kity to family and friends in O'Brien.
This time there's no going back. The transfer of the goleador [goalscoer] to Spartak Moscow was closed late yesterday in
the offices of the first floor of the Monumental stadium, while Cavenaghi, who was training for the last time with the
squad in el Hindu Club, will travel to Russia today or tomorrow morning after a medical checkup and will join a team
contending for the Intertoto cup (they have to play against Villarreal in Pellegrini) in order to win a place in the UEFA
Cup.
The negotiations between River and Spartak were carried out the moment that CSKA formally announced their interest.
On Saturday night, Jose Maria Aguilar met the manager of the Russian club (Yevgeny Smolenstsev) and Marcelo
Simonian, the industralist who made the offer. They immediately agreed on the total amount (11,500,000 dollars).
Doubts arose over how River was going to receive the 9,000,000 dollars owed to them. The Russians offered half the
amount in cash and the rest in instalments. River did not close the deal because they wanted to make sure that the
funds were guaranteed due to the current crisis in Russian banks.
In the end, they agreed on the figures by lowering the price, receiving more cash instead...
Meanwhile, Néstor Sívori, el Torito's agent, who wanted to discuss some questions, reached a preagreed contract (he will
sign for three or four years). Everything was arranged for the forward to leave the Hindu after having supper with the
squad.
The sale of Cavenaghi is a good deal for River, since getting 9.000.000 dollars for a player hasn't been easy since the
player was put on the market. In addition, el pibe [the boy] needed to develop his career and clubs, and the greenbacks
will be reinvested into the team.
Cavenaghi is not only leaving River. He's leaving his second home, where he has spent eight years of his life (he moved
into the hostel at 13), where his best friends are (Sebastián Rivera, la Gata Fernandez, el Flaco Saccone). He's leaving
behind his beloved shirt. He's leaving behind a space that will be hard to fill in the team and is breaking the hearts of
fans. He's leaving behind unforgettable memories and goals. Many goals.
Thanks for everything.
