Saviola: "It's a new team so there needs to be patience"



The forward asks for a little tolerance during the preparations for La Copa America. He says: "I want to show that I
can be a first-team player."

It can be said that Javier Saviola has been waiting for this occasion for a long time. This call up for La Copa America, held
in Peru from the 6th July onwards, plus the absence of Hernán Crespo, has placed hopes in the forward of winning a first-

show why I can be a first-team player... I definitely want to win a place in the national team."

In last Sunday's 2:0 defeat against Colombia in a friendly match in Miami, there was a dull display from the national

box and did not display his usual ability and speed.

"Most of this team are at a new stage," Saviola explained, "it's a different team, with some new parts, and for that
reason the fans must be patient. This team has some new faces who need playing time. La Copa America is our great
objective and they can make their judgements afterwards."

The Italian media are certain that Barcelona has proposed a swap with Inter for Uruguayan Alvaro Recoba in exchange
for the Argentine forward. The possibility exists, but Saviola has his mind on trying to change the image of his latest
performance. The game against Peru today will be a good opportunity. "So far I'm thinking about nothing else but the
national team. Until I came to Argentina I was a Barcelona player. I don't know about all the rumours that are being
talked about in Europe," Saviola explained.

- Does this national team seem a little tainted by the last performance?

- These games are a preparation. There is no need to despair, we have time to improve. It is necessary to have a good
Copa America so that we can become stronger as a team. It would be good to win it for ourselves and the people.

- At some point, did it feel a bit like an endless wait to have the opportunity as a first-team player?

- Sure, now I have more serious chances than before. A call up doesn't mean a guaranteed position and I've always tried
not to generate controversy. I've always kept the patience that all football players must have. Today these other call ups
show that I am being repaid for that patience.

- The immediate goal is La Copa America, but according to Bielsa this team will be the core of the team which will go to
the Olympic Games...

- I would like to be at Athens too. I've always watched the Games, since I was very young. I've always enjoyed them
very much. For myself, I would love to be there.

Now there's only one place left

With the call up for six football players, DT Marcelo Bielsa has 21 players and only has one place left to complete the list
for La Copa America. Last night, Newells defender Leandro Fernandez travelled to New York to join the squad. River's
Javier Mascherano and Lucho González will leave tomorrow morning directly for Chiclayo, where Argentina will make its
debut against Ecuador on 7 July. And Roberto Abbondanzieri, Carlos Tevez and Clemente Rodriguez will head from
Manizales for Peru the day after tomorrow, after playing for Boca against Once Caldas in La Copa Libertadores final.

Saviola: "Es un equipo nuevo y hay que ser paciente"

El delantero pidió un poco de tolerancia en esta preparación para la Copa América. "Quiero demostrar porque puedo
ser titular", sostuvo

Se percibe impaciente al seleccionado, con un traje almidonado, esperando que algunas caras nuevas, tan esperadas
para la mayoría, se saquen un diez en buen juego y le cambien el aspecto. Puede decirse que hace tiempo que Javier
Saviola espera vestido para la ocasión. Esta convocatoria de cara a la Copa América, que desde el 6 del mes próximo se
disputará en Perú, sumada la ausencia de Hernán Crespo, alberga la esperanza del delantero de ganarse la titularidad. No
hay nerviosismo ni desesperación. Pero sí deseo. Lo explica con un tono calmo y firme: "Quiero demostrar por qué puedo
ser titular. Si fui a Europa y me gané la consideración de mucha gente por algo será. Quiero ganarme un lugar en la
selección definitivamente".

En la derrota del último domingo por 2 a 0 ante Colombia, en el amistoso jugado en Miami, el seleccionado redondeó una
actuación deslucida, con muchos interrogantes con vistas al futuro. Saviola no escapó del nivel general del equipo, se
mostró estático en el área y no exhibió su habitual habilidad y rapidez.

"La mayoría de este equipo está en una etapa nueva –explicó Saviola–. Es un equipo distinto, con cierto recambio, y por
eso el hincha tiene que ser paciente. Este equipo tiene algunas caras nuevas que necesitan horas de juego. La Copa
América es nuestro gran objetivo y después de ella se podrán sacar conclusiones."

Los medios italianos aseguran que Barcelona le propuso a Inter un trueque del delantero argentino por el uruguayo
Alvaro Recoba. La posibilidad existe, pero Saviola tiene la cabeza puesta en tratar de revertir la última imagen. El cotejo
de hoy frente a Perú será una buena oportunidad. "or ahora pienso nada más que en el seleccionado. Hasta que vine
para la Argentina yo era jugador de Barcelona. Desconozco todos los rumores de los que se habla en Europa", explicó
Saviola.

–?Esta selección se siente un poco tocada en lo íntimo por las últimas actuaciones?

– Estos partidos son de preparación. No hay que desesperarse, tenemos tiempo para mejorar. Hay que hacer una buena
Copa América para afianzarnos como equipo. Vendría bien ganarla para nosotros y para la gente.

–En algún punto, ?se te hizo un poco interminable la espera por una oportunidad como titular?

–Es cierto, ahora tengo chances más serias que antes. A uno cuando lo llaman no tiene asegurado el puesto y siempre
intenté no generar polémica. Siempre me aferré a la paciencia que todo futbolista debe tener. Hoy tengo la recompensa
por esa paciencia que demostré en otras convocatorias.

–Como primer objetivo está la Copa América, pero según Bielsa este equipo será la base del que vaya a los Juegos
Olímpicos...

–Me gustaría estar también en Atenas. Siempre, desde muy chico, fui muy observador de los Juegos. Siempre me
gustaron muchísimo. Si fuera por mí, me encantaría estar.

plantel. Javier Mascherano y Lucho González, de River, ma?ana por la ma?ana partirán directamente a Chiclayo, donde la
Argentina debutará el 7 de julio ante Ecuador. Y Roberto Abbondanzieri, Carlos Tevez y Clemente Rodríguez se
embarcarán pasado ma?ana desde Manizales hacia Perú, luego de jugar por Boca la final de la Copa Libertadores ante
