How Ranieri's players measured up

The Guardian 《卫报》

Marco Ambrosio

The Italian goalkeeper had no chance with the first two goals but he might
have done better with the third. Made an instinctive save early in the second
half but was thankful to a Desailly goalline clearance. Had little to do before the
interval but did not look convincing when he came to punch one free-kick. 6

Mario Melchiot

Looked uncomfortable when Monaco players ran at him and his late tackle on Jérome
Rothen gave away the free-kick from which the French team opened the scoring. Caught
out of position a few times after venturing forward but was hardly a defensive liability.
Was replaced by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. 6

John Terry

Chelsea's most impressive defender early on when Monaco applied pressure, winning headers
and making blocks and tackles. But was grateful to Wayne Bridge for good covering when he
misjudged a pass and struggled as Monaco turned up the heat after half-time. Beaten to the ball
for Monaco's third. 6

Marcel Desailly

Not the player of old and might have been sent off had the officials seen him catch Fernando
Morientes in the face off the ball in the second half. Did decently in the first half but struggled as
the game went on. Looked vulnerable at times in the air and particularly when faced by pace, once
embarrassed by Guily. Did make a vital goalline clearance. 4

Wayne Bridge

Suffered a couple of times in the initial stages when Ludovic Giuly ran at him while Monaco were
dominating but made a vital block to deny the same player before half-time after a misjudgement by
Terry and had other useful defensive contributions. Looked to get forward when circumstances allowed
and delivered a couple of decent crosses. 6

Scott Parker

Provided to cross for Crespo's equaliser and made some decent tackles, doing his job in trying to block
Chelsea's right flank and prevent Monaco attacking down that side. But his use of the ball was mixed,
with his long passing tending to be loose and it was plain why he prefers a central position to one on
the right. 5

Frank Lampard

Chelsea's best midfield player and the dominant figure of the first half, continuing his impressive
form this season. The former West Ham player seemed to be everywhere, making interceptions near
the edge of his own penalty area, passing the ball astutely and accurately and getting forward to join
the attack at times. Several times played good long passes from right to left. 7

Claude Makelele

Spoiled his evening with an awful piece of play-acting which got Andreas Zikos sent off early in the second
half. Was barely touched by the Monaco player but collapsed as if poleaxed. That cheating overshadowed a
performance which was decent in the first half but went downhill, like Chelsea's. His yellow card will keep
him out of the return. 3

Jesper Gronkjaer

Struggled to get into the game, doing little with the ball when he had it in attacking areas, and looked
much inferior to the absent Damien Duff in terms of the trickery and invention he could offer. Nowhere
near as effective as he had been in the quarter-final win at Highbury. Delivered only one dangerous first-half
cross, which led to a penalty appeal, and was taken off at half-time to be replaced by Juan Sebastián Verón. 5

Hernán Crespo

The Argentina striker said this would be his 'moment' in a difficult season and looked spot-on when he
finished sharply to equalise. Mind you, he owed his team-mates after failing to clear the free-kick which led to
Monaco taking the lead and might have scored a second. Otherwise did not contribute a significant amount,
save for a few flicks with head and feet. 6

Eidur Gudjohnsen

Failed to take any of three opportunities to score but asked questions of Monaco with his movement
and his touches. Will be grateful that Crespo tucked the ball away to equalise in the 22nd minute because
he had stumbled when given the initial chance from Parker's cross. 6

Substitutes

Juan Sebastián Verón Came on at half-time for Gronkjaer and began well, chipping to set up Gudjohnsen
for a shot. But soon faded on the left. 6

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink Wasted a fine chance when he headed Bridge's cross wide. 4

Robert Huth Almost a winger at times. Not his forte. 5

〈独立报〉The Independent

Battle of Monte Carlo: Man for man

21 April 2004

MONACO

Flavio Roma: Not at fault for Crespo's goal but not unduly busy. Mark: 5/10

Hugo Ibarra: Bright start but early forays petered out as he dealt with Bridge runs. 6

Ga?l Givet: Used physical presence to squeeze space in the box and intimidate opponents at
set-pieces. 6

Julien Rodriguez: Worked hard to keep tabs on Gudjohnsen and limit threat from attacks down middle. 5

Patrice Evra: Dealt with Chelsea long balls and started counter-attacks on left. 6

Ludovic Giuly: Typically for someone with the "vision of Zola", his quiet spells were followed by
devastating touches. 7

Lucas Bernardi: Lively from the off. Roamed wide in search of space.
Distribution good from the centre. 6

Andreas Zikos: His delicately-weighted lobbed passes proved to be a sporadic danger until
unfair dismissal. 5

Jerome Rothen: Not as potent down the left as he can be but made a solid contribution. 6

Fernando Morientes: Always there or thereabouts and produced a thumping great finish for 2-1. 6

Dado Prso: His movement caused headaches for the visitors. Good conversion of fortuitous
heading opportunity for 1-0. 6

Substitutes:

Edouard Cissé: Team-mates seemed buoyed by his presence. 5

Shabani Nonda: Immediate impact to steal in and score with first touch. 6

Plasil: No time to make an impact. 5

CHELSEA

Marco Ambrosio: Flap on cusp of break; reaction save on 50 to palm Prso's header clear.
Error for 3-1. 5

Mario Melchiot: Nervous start and deserved yellow card for foul on Rothen.
Settled but substituted. 5

John Terry: Defence not as solid as usual, but he blocked well. Did best work tracking runners,
not least Giuly. 6

Marcel Desailly: Edgy early on, defending too high. Settled to give a slightly more assured display. 5

Wayne Bridge: Positive going forward, but also occupied for long spell in duel with the roaming Prso. 6

Scott Parker: Energetic and willing, provided ball in for 1-1. Lacked telling passes. Substituted. 5

Frank Lampard: Superb performance full of hard work, good tackling, fine passing and total
commitment. 8

Claude Makelele: Seemed in two minds whether to act as barrier or conduit.
Faked to get Zikos sent off. 4

Jesper Gronkjaer: Lively down the left but hesitancy with the final ball led to his substitution at
half-time. 5

Hernan Crespo: Fluffed clearance assisted Monaco for 1-0.
Made amends with goal and lively contribution. 6

Eidur Gudjohnsen: Did well to supply pass for 1-1 after falling over. Put himself about but not
always productively. 6

Substitutes:

Sebastian Veron: Needed to be more assertive and looked short of desire. 4.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink: Came on for Melchiot to little effect. 5

Robert Huth: On for Parker but did not add solidity. 5
