Barcelona want Argentine striker Javier Saviola to apply for dual nationality to free up another spot in their squad for a non-EU player.
The Catalans have already held a meeting with the player to try and convince him to request a joint Spanish and Argentine passport in time for next season.
Barca president Joan Laporta admits the move would be very beneficial to the club, but insists the final decision will rest with the player himself.
"We (Barcelona) will make all the efforts possible, but it depends more on the player than the club and will require a bit of time," declared the Catalan chief.
Laporta is also hopeful that goalkeeper Rustu Recber will cease to be viewed as a foreigner after a court ruling allowing Real Sociedad's Turkish international Nihat Kahveci to become an EU national.
The Barca supremo has revealed his club will pursue the same procedures as Sociedad in a bid to gain Rustu an EU passport.
