MILAN - Javier Zanetti spoke to Inter Channel after Inter's 1-1 draw with Chievo . The Nerazzurri captain said: "We didn't give much away to our opponents. We could have avoided their goal and it was tough after we fell behind. At that point we tried to give everything to get back into the match. Luckily we managed to get at least one goal."

Zanetti added: "Now we need a turning point because we can't continue like this. We must improve at all costs and let's hope we can do it as soon as possible. We must start working again immediately and forget about tonight's match."

CORSICO - It was a busy Monday for Javier Zanetti. After taking part in the presentation of Sky's new programme about Milan derbies, the Inter captain made for the Bar Leon d'Oro in Corsico just outside town to pick up an award for his solidarity initiatives.

Zanetti was presented with the 'Golden Lion for Solidarity' in recognition of the work done by PUPI Foundation, the organisation he set up with his wife Paula to help underprivileged children in Argentina. Welcomed by an ovation from the many Nerazzurri fans present, for whom the captain is, above all, a 'lion' on the pitch, Zanetti answered questions about his charity organisation and outlined future initiatives. On behalf of the Corsico local authorities, mayor Sergio Graffeo presented the captain with a special plate.

MILAN - Javier Zanetti took part in last night's presentation of new programme 'Derby per sempre', which makes its debut on Sky Sport 1 at 18:00 this afternoon. Presented by Fabio Caressa, the programme's guests include two derby veterans in Bergomi and Altafini, and will begin with the history of AC Milan v Inter clashes from the last decade, starting from the 1995/96 season when Zanetti made his derby debut.

During the presentation at Milanese restaurant Il Pontaccio, the Nerazzurri captain recounted his many experiences of Milan derbies and the emotions he feels before playing "the most exciting clash of my life".

Zanetti also spoke to journalists about the team's progress. "We have to take it match by match. We mustn't think about Milan and Juventus," he said. "Let's focus on each match as it comes, starting with Wednesday's against Atalanta . The victory over Palermo is an excellent result, but we must continue winning."

"We really want to do well. For us it's a fundamental match against a great opponent. These will be two important matches."

Do you disagree with the opinion that this match is easier than Juventus and Milan's?
"We have never thought this. We have great respect for this opponent that has done very good things. The fact that they have reached this stage of the Champions (League) definitely means something. "But the important thing is that the team manages to play well and create many chances. We must be more aggressive in front of goal; you can't give away certain chances, especially when you play abroad."

On Adriano's performance, the Nerazzurri captain said: "He's not finding the net at the moment, and strikers are always a bit disappointed when they're not scoring. Adriano is fundamental for us; he will definitely return to playing like he did at the start of the season." Looking ahead to Sunday's Milan derby, Zanetti added: "We're confident. MILAN - "It's always disappointing when you lose a derby, but today they took three points away from us that we deserved," said Javier Zanetti to Inter Channel after the 259th Milan derby. "We didn't give away anything to Milan and we created problems for them. The Nerazzurri fans at the stadium didn't deserve to leave with Inter defeated."

The Inter captain continued: "We should stay calm because of what we saw on the pitch today. We dominated the match and deserved to win, but we must stay calm and correct those few mistakes that we made.

"The Nerazzurri fans' ovation for us when we left the pitch at the end of the match? They understood that we gave everything. I thank them; unfortunately we didn't win. They deserve a lot more."

Team captain Javier Zanetti has been giving FC Internazionale Milano the benefit of his experience on the right side of defence or midfield for a decade since joining the Serie A club from CA Banfield in his native Argentina before the start of the 1995/96 season.

'It Trattore'
The 31-year-old Zanetti, nicknamed 'Il Trattore' - The Tractor - has been a star for Inter, with the highlight of his time in Milan coming in 1997/98 when he won the UEFA Cup. However, a 1-1 draw at FC Porto this week has raised hopes that the one-time bricklayer might yet win his first UEFA Champions League crown.

uefa.com: You have been at Inter for almost a decade. Have you never been tempted to go elsewhere?

Javier Zanetti: I've had many offers to leave but I've always stayed at Inter as they've always treated me very well. Since day one, they made me feel at home and I have a great relationship with the supporters and all the people at the club. People tell me that I've become a bit of a modern icon, I only say it with modesty but I'm very proud to have become captain of this club. A club with a great tradition.

uefa.com: How have you enjoyed being coached by Roberto Mancini since he took over at Inter?

Zanetti: He loves proper football that's played well, and players with strong personalities. He was a great player and he's trying to pass that message on to this hard working squad. We all want to play a role in Inter's history. In the past he was a team-mate of many of the players in the squad, both at [UC] Sampdoria and [S.S.] Lazio, but that doesn't matter now. When the time comes to make a decision, he doesn't let that get in the way.

uefa.com: Inter remain unbeaten in Serie A and the Champions League this season. How have things changed since the last campaign?

Zanetti: This season many good new players have joined the club and we're all working towards understanding what Mancini wants from us. We now have a solid platform to work from and that's an important part of our aim in writing a glorious page in Inter's history.

uefa.com: You have been playing alongside your Argentina team-mate Juan Sebastián Verón at Inter. How has he been settling in?

Zanetti: He's very important. Seba has been outstanding so far. You only have to see how much attention the opposition pay him - he's our playmaker, and he's always desperate to get the ball and make the team play.

uefa.com: Inter have not won a Serie A title since 1989 or a European trophy since 1997/98. Do you feel pressure as a result of that?

It's been a long time since the club last won a trophy and that's created even more pressure on us during key moments

Zanetti: Every player who arrives at Inter is aware of our duty to win everything. We have extra pressure because of this. We want to put that behind us now and finally come away with something for once.

uefa.com: Although you have not lost a game all year, Inter are still eleven points adrift of the top of the Serie A table. The Champions League looks like your best chance of winning a trophy. How do you see it?

Zanetti: Now, it's all or nothing. Only the best 16 remain. The task is simply to win. It will be very difficult but we just have to take each game as they come starting with Porto.

MILAN - After taking on Rossoneri keeper Nelson Dida at Subbuteo (the match finished 1-1), Javier Zanetti answered questions from journalists in a press conference held to celebrate the release of the new version of the Hasbro football game.

In just a few minutes, from the match against Udinese to the derby, you have gone from seven to fourteen points off the top...
"Unfortunately this is football. Things have gone wrong for us. We were hoping to get great results, but two small distractions have cost us many points."

How does Inter's season change after this defeat?
"It doesn't change, it continues. There are two competitions we can do very well in, and we are obliged to believe until the end."

On Sunday you face Lecce...
"We must stay focused and play our game. It will be a fight until the end with the other teams in the running for third place in the championship. Starting from Sunday we will be looking for that victory that has been missing for a few matches."

What's your opinion of Adriano's current situation?
"ersonally, I have seen that he's happy. He works very hard in training, and he just needs to score. But we mustn't forget that he has just come back from a bad injury and that he didn't have any holidays last year because he played in the Copa America. We are all convinced he will have a great finale to the season."

And what about the rumours that say he will leave Inter at the end of the season?
" Adriano is fine at Inter. He tries to improve every day; he will remain here for many years because he wants to win with this shirt."

But he didn't play on Sunday. Was he very disappointed?
"The coach has to send eleven players on the pitch. If he could, he'd get everyone to play. It's difficult for a coach when he has to choose. We have all been left out at some point. Adriano just has to stay calm. With a goal he will return to being the player he was at the start of the season."

You play Porto in a fortnight. What do think about this clash?
"We had an excellent match in the first leg. Unfortunately we didn't win, but we scored an important goal away from home which represents a small advantage. The best Inter is needed to win the clash, and we're very close to being a great team. We can do great things together."

MILAN - "We created loads of chances and we should have finished off the match earlier. We did well to give little away to Lecce, who scored from their first chance on goal," said Inter captain Javier Zanetti on the Nerazzurri's performance against the Giallorossi.

"The team must continue on this path because it is creating a lot of chances, it is focused and not distracted," continued Zanetti. "We deserved to win at the end. We had to give a reply after the derby we didn't deserve to lose. The reaction was the right one, the one we needed. There are still many important matches to go; let's enjoy this victory but start thinking about the next match.

"I also want to thank the fans who are always right behind the team. Adriano's goal? We are happy for him. He needed to score to set himself free."

NERAZZURRI AT CHARITY VOLLEYBALL MATCH

CASNATE (COMO) - Roberto Mancini and Inter players Javier Zanetti, Ivan Cordoba, Alberto Fontana, Esteban Cambiasso, Adriano and Zé Maria took part in a charity volleyball match last night to raise money for Zanetti's PUPI (Por Un Piberio Integrado) Foundation, Cordoba's Colombia Te Quiere Ver association and many other good causes.

Speaking to journalists about Esteban Cambiasso's natural ability at the game, Javier Zanetti said: "He was a volleyball player in the past." The Inter captain also commented on Brazilian forward Adriano's moment: "He's very calm, he's training very hard so he can find his best form. Zanetti continued: "I don't think the gap between us and the top reflects the truth because when we played against Milan and Juventus we were on a par, and in certain moments we were even superior." MILAN - Against Lazio last night, Francesco Toldo played his 350th match in the Italian top flight. For the Nerazzurri, the goalkeeper has played 165 matches (117 in the Serie A, 44 in European cups and 4 in the Italian Cup).

Captain Javier Zanetti played his 439th match for Inter last night (317 of those in the Serie A) and joins Alessandro Altobelli in ninth position in the all time list of most present Nerazzurri, behind Bergomi (519), Facchetti (476), Mazzola (418), Corso (414), Baresi (392), Meazza (365), Burgnich (359) and Zenga 328.

Julio Ricardo Cruz's headed goal at the Olimpico was his 16th goal in 51 games for the Nerazzurri. The Argentine is fourth behind Martins, Recoba and Vieri in the list of current Inter scorers in Italian and European competitions.

APPIANO GENTILE - A near-capacity crowd is expected at the Meazza for tomorrow night's Uefa Champions League Round of 16 return leg against Porto. In the build-up to the clash, Nerazzurri captain spoke at the pre-match Uefa news conference at Angelo Moratti Sports Centre.

The Argentine said: "We're expecting Porto to come and play their game; it's very important moment of the season for both teams. We will have to be careful of the traps this game might hide, but we want to take the match into our own hands.

"They have a lot of good players, especially in attack. And I'm referring to players like McCarthy, Quaresma and Diego, who returns. These are all players that can make the difference. We will have to be careful and focused, and take our chances in attack.

"But I am convinced the team will do very well. The team, the club and the fans want to do well in the Champions League. We know it's a very important game, we know what is at stake. MILAN - After Juan Veron, Nerazzurri captain Javier Zanetti analysed Part 1 of the Champions League quarter-final Euroderby in a post-match interview with Inter Channel. "In football it has always been shown that nothing is impossible. We're two goals down, but we have to believe in our possibilities," he said.

"We were playing an excellent game tonight, the episodes penalised us. Milan's first goal took away our legs a bit. They hadn't done hardly anything until that moment of the match that we were running. But this is football. In this kind of match episodes are decisive; they did well.

"We played better in the first half, but after their second goal we opened up a bit too much. The Inter fans will surely be right behind us in the return leg. Faith cannot be touched."

MILAN - Ahead of tomorrow's big Champions League clash with AC Milan, Javier Zanetti answered questions from journalists at Monday's pre-match Uefa news conference at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium.

"The eve of this match is important. We're focused on the match ahead of us and we're hoping to finish it in the best possible way," Zanetti said. "It is our goal to qualify, and we know it will be a difficult match because we're two goals down. We need to play the perfect match, and we will try."

Asked if Adriano will play on Tuesday, the Inter captain said: "It's important to have him back. A player with his characteristics can be decisive on the pitch and create difficulties for any defence. Let's hope he's fine, like he has showed in training recently, and that he can make his contribution together with the whole team."

Zanetti concluded: "It's fundamental to give all our pride tomorrow evening. We must give everything we have, and even more. We want to play a perfect match so we can get through the round. We gave very little away to Milan in the first leg and they scored two goals. We will have to be more careful tomorrow."
