Marseille’s season started on the expected positive note, winning against a Grenoble side that showed good character to make a game of it after a nightmare start.
Any questions raised about OM over the last few weeks were dispatched within seconds, as les Phoceens shot into the lead after just one minute of play. A pass from Taye Taiwo to Mamadou Niang saw the latter then deceive two defenders before striking past Jody Viviani with the aid of a deflection.
The early pressure continued and the lively Niang could have doubled the lead moments later, however, his fierce drive flew wide. However, this verve soon dissipated a little, with Viviani forced to really exert himself once more in the remainder of the half, diving brilliantly to push away a Taiwo free kick.
If Marseille had been in complete control of the first half, they were given a mighty scare around the hour mark. Danijel Lubjoja’s dangerous centre nearly produced a golden chance for Nassim Akrour but Gabriel Heinze helped snuff out the danger. Moments later, Steve Mandanda made his first real save of the new season, beating away a shot from Laurent Courtois.
OM would struggle to impose themselves for much of the second half, however, they would enjoy a comfortable conclusion to the game as Benoit Cheyrou shot home with ten minutes remaining.
