AFTER LA COPA
"Bielsa was right "
Crespo has admitted that the decision not to go to the Copa America came from the coach only, but he also
recognised that he needed a holiday to recover his form.
EZEQUIEL COGAN. Ole. 2004.07
"Bielsa believed that the best thing for me was to rest, to take a holiday... To feel the pleasure of playing football
again... "
- "Did you lose it?
- "Yes. It felt like a weight, and it was hard to return to my old self, and the games were a weight, a tremendous
psychological load. For that reason I now understand that Bielsa was right. Because I feel happy again to wake up
early, to train twice a day, to sweat and to kick a ball again.
Hernan Crespo, this time, preferred not to look back. Already far from that incident after the 0-0 with Paraguay, the
last fixture in the World Cup Qualifying Round, when he had a fight with El Loco, in what appeared to be a clash
of opinions... In short, Hernan used time like his ally and, when the obligatory question came up in an interview
with Fox Sport, he gave his version of why he was not in the Copa America: "It was not a mutual decision, we had
different points of view, but Bielsa gave his view and I respected it like I would respect any decision taken by the
coach. Did we fight? Not at all, I never fought with anybody."
The last days of September 2003 found Crespo facing a new experience: adapting to England, a different country
from what he was used to, and being one of those responsible for transforming the investment of Roman
Abramovich into sporting achievements. But that was not the only adventure he underwent? Because only two
weeks after his arrival at Chelsea, Buenos Aires awaited with that legacy that he wanted: the National Team was
already without Batistuta, Argentina’s first game in the World Cup Qualifying Round came along and he was the
new undisputed owner of the No 9 shirt. "Does being No 9 in the National Team seem like it’s weighing you
down? No, it doesn’t weigh me down," Hernan said then. Today, nobody can say that he hasn’t been able to carry
the load. What’s certain, however, is that since el Rey Leon [Lion King – Batistuta] left, Crespo has started to feel
his competitors getting closer to the back of his neck every time. And, now, he watches them from afar? He said,
"I’m convinced that I’m going to return to the National Team, and let’s see what happens now", but he also
recognized that for this to happen "the most important thing is to recover my old self, the one that I have been
sometimes".
Bringing the subject of the National Team to an end, Hernan shared his "major annoyance" at the defeat against
Brazil: "Everything was going well, we were so close to winning, yet it become a defeat to Brazil, which wasn’t
deserved. Luck? They had a little, because that last ball didn’t go to anyone; it went and stopped at Adriano’s left
foot."
And now. On the surface, at least, it’s clear Crespo has already started a new stage in his life. That transition has
come in a better way for him. As he explains:
"My exit from Chelsea had to do with socialising. Because if you look at the statistics, I scored goals. The problem
was that I wasn’t happy in England and then there was this possibility to go to Milan. Maybe if it had been another
club, I would have thought that Chelsea are also a great team, they will play in the Champions League and have a
desire to grow... But as a boy I watched the Italian league and watched Diego’s Napoli and the Dutch at Milan. I
dreamt of playing with Milan, so I’m going to try and take full advantage of it."
"I’m happy to be here because of the significance of Milan, because it’s a first-rate team, that paid attention to me.
It’s very nice to arrive at a club that has players who are winning?
"I found a great group. They made me feel at home, and that was what I needed in England ".
