Asprilla heads to Argentina

Veteran Colombian striker Faustino Asprilla has agreed to play for Argentine side Estudiantes this season.

Asprilla has been searching for a permanent club since his contract with Universidad de Chile expired last summer as his wage demands blocked an extension.

An offer from Qatar failed to come to fruition and the 34-year-old has confirmed his intention to turn out for Estudiantes in the coming campaign.

"I don't have any problems with the financial aspect - that has been arranged from the beginning," said Asprilla.

"I am very proud that a coach like Carlos Bilardo has called on me to play in his team. He convinced me to move to Argentina to play all this year.

"I played for Deportivo Tulua in Colombia at the weekend - the team for which I am an investor - but I will now travel to Argentina to start work for Estudiantes.

"I always wanted to have the chance to play in Argentina because I like their football. I always watch it on television so I think that playing there is a very big personal challenge in my professional career."

Estudiantes coach Bilardo does not feel the former Newcastle United star's well-documented off-field problems will come to the fore in Argentina.

Bilardo commented: "I know there will not be any problems with Faustino. He is very happy with this chance of playing in Argentina.

"I feel that he is going to have a great season with us. I only care about what he can do in each training session and, most of all, in each match.

"Anyway, I know that sometimes the press follows him too much and tries to make scandals. At least that is what happened in some places with him but I think that he isn't going to have any problem in La Plata."
