"... Outwitted, outmanoeuvred and outgunned by the third most famous team in Turkey,
Chelsea’s big-time pretensions were ruthlessly exposed as little more than a delusion. ...
A lethal combination of Turkish ruthlessness and collective madness from Chelsea’s suicidal
defence was enough to leave the Russian reflecting bitterly on the first defeat of his Bridge reign.
[Ranieri] even switched to a 3-5-2 formation for the first time in months. The end result was
little short of chaos as Hernan Crespo, Claude Makelele and Geremi all failed to make an impact.
To compound Ranieri’s selection error, those who hung on to their places — most notably Juan
Veron and Adrian Mutu — proved to be equally ineffective in Stamford Bridge’s first Champions
League clash in four years. ..."

'It is time for the Tinkerman to stop it. Otherwise he may be getting a tinkle all of his own from
a certain disgruntled Russian asking him to do his fiddling back in his native Rome. Claudio
Ranieri's "new Chelsea" suffered the first defeat last night - after 10 games - but what a
damaging one it was. Not, because of the events in Italy, as damaging as it could have been,
but embarrassing all the same. And Roman Abramovich did not spend his millions to be
embarrassed.
Players, no matter how good, need systems. And not just for one match. The constant changing
of personnel and pattern surely has to desist. Ranieri must find a core. A rhythm. A rhyme and
reason. ...
Ranieri left top-scorer Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink on the bench and watched as Hernan Crespo
skied a chance on five minutes and Veron, through on goal, lost his bearings after playing an
unintended one-two off a Turkish leg. His bearings were never found again. Ranieri had deployed
the team around him and he disappointed. ..."

’Chelsea's players did not lose this match last night; their coach did. An astonishing tactical
aberration by Claudio Ranieri, experimenting with wing-backs when his charges are far more
comfortable with 4-4-2, so confused his players that, shapeless and helpless, they succumbed
to Sergen Yalcin's smartly taken first-half brace. Chelsea now take on the Group G leaders, Lazio,
home and away and they will need to perform with far more cohesion than this. Frank Lampard
strived his hardest but he could not make up for the lightweight presence of Juan Sebastian Veron
and the suicidal nature of Ranieri's chosen strategy.
"...No wonder Ranieri saw sense and reverted to a back four at half-time... The arrival of the in-form
pair of Duff and Hasselbaink for the ineffectual Adrian Mutu and Hernan Crespo triggered applause
reverberating around the Bridge. Yet, in truth, responsibility for the first-half mess lay not with Mutu
and Crespo but with their coach. Life would have been so much easier for Chelsea's players if their
coach had not handicapped them. ..."
"...With Veron all feints, flicks and little of substance in midfield, the heart went out to Lampard
who was trying to play ball-winner and creator. Claude Makelele was too busy fighting fires in front
of Chelsea's defence to assist Lampard in covering for Veron. Here was a test of Chelsea's character.
Lampard stood up to be counted, driving forward, creating chances, including a fine one which Veron
squandered awfully. ...'

'...Ranieri's variations, half mischief and half cunning, no longer seemed so endearingly
idiosyncratic. It was no longer academic to ask why Damien Duff was not on the left when the
Turkish champions, with a trio of centre-backs, looked as if they would be susceptible to attacks
down the wings. This, too, was the first occasion when Chelsea's squad rotation looked more of a
cult than a policy. ... Where was the benefit of conjuring up a three-man defence when the
unfamiliarity of the formation had each man in it looking vague? ..".
英国小报《太阳报》"Statues turn to stone"
"CLAUDIO RANIERI had said he was like Michelangelo sculpting a team from a slab of marble.
Last night his trusty chisel slipped and removed his creation’s head. Any more results like this
and Ranieri’s will surely follow. ... The Tinkerman tinkered once too often as he switched to a
three-man central defence and wing-backs for the first time this season.
"... Juan Sebastian Veron did a disappearing act after 20 minutes. And his Argentinian
team-mate Hernan Crespo was equally invisible. That left embarrassing holes in Roman
Abramovich’s multimillion pound jigsaw. The result was an utter shambles.

Veron had a frustrating night
'Big-spending Chelsea were embarrassed at Stamford Bridge as they suffered their first defeat of
the season at the hands of 10-man Besiktas. ... Chelsea had dominated possession but the goalscoring
touch of Juan Sebastian Veron, Hernan Crespo and Frank Lampard deserted them before the
Blues fell behind. ... After the break, the dropped duo of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Damien
Duff replaced the ineffective Crespo and Adrian Mutu. ..."
Ranieri rues mistakes
Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri pinpointed mistakes by his reshuffled defence as the reason for
the home defeat by Besiktas. Ranieri started with a three-man central defence of Marcel Desailly
being flanked by John Terry and William Gallas.
"We made mistakes and when you make mistakes in the Champions League you concede
a goal 99 percent of the time," said Ranieri. "We started very well and tried to score a goal and we
had two good chances.
"Then we made two mistakes and conceded two goals, and when you give away something
to your opponents in the Champions League it is very difficult.
"My players tried everything to get a draw from the match but we faced an organised team
in front of us who closed down all the space in the second half.
"It was difficult to create chances and whenever we shot we had a wall in front of us."
