UCL, Inter 2-1 Lille: Nerazzurri top of Group B
Wednesday, 02 November 2011 23:00:05
permalink MILAN - After the 1-0 win in France, Inter overcame Lille once more in Matchday 4 of the
UEFA Champions League, this time at the Stadio Meazza and by two goals to one.
Walter Samuel was back on the pitch and also back on the score sheet with his first goal in Europe in
two years, rising above everyone else to power home a header and put Inter in front after 18 minutes.
Milito could have made it two soon after the restart but messed up his finish to the astonishment of the
Meazza faithful, who nonetheless continued to cheer him on. The fans' support was a big help for El
Principe and he did make it 2-0 in the 65th minute following a storming run by captain Zanetti, who was
outstanding tonight. A mistake by the Nerazzurri defence let in De Melo seven minutes from time for what
proved to be a consolation goal only.
FIRST HALF – Ranieri had Samuel and Thiago Motta available again to face Lille and up front opted for a
pairing of Milito and Zarate. Lille, without Basa and Balmont, stuck with their attacking trio of Cole,
Sox and Hazard.
There was merely a minute and 40 seconds on the clock when Milito was denied a goal by the woodwork:
collecting Chivu's long ball from inside Inter's half, El Principe found himself with just Landreau to
beat and flicked the ball over the keeper's head with the outside of his right boot, only to see it come
back off the woodwork. Zarate went down in the box following a challenge by Rozenhal in the 5th minute
but replays showed Stark was right to let play continue as the Czech midfielder played the ball. Zarate
tried again on 8 minutes with a low right-footed drive that failed to trouble the French keeper, while
Pedretti had a go down the other end (9 minutes): wide. Samuel's foul on Jelen on 13 minutes gave Hazard
a chance for a shot on goal, but the ball went behind for a corner following a defensive block by
Cambiasso's face. Sow threatened at the far post 17 minutes in: captain Zanetti was well placed to deny
him a shot on goal. It seemed Zarate had broken the deadlock a minute later, his powerful effort taking
a fortunate deflection off the underside of Landreau and trickling wide. Sneijder whipped in the ensuing
corner and Samuel leapt above the crowd - towering over Mavuba - to head home and put the Nerazzurri 1-0
up. Hazard went looking for an equaliser in the 25th minute but was thwarted as Castellazzi dived to
punch clear. Zarate then had two opportunities around the 40-minute mark with Cambiasso the inspirer:
Landreau saved the first with no real difficulty then rushed out to beat the forward to a dangerous
ball. As half time approached, Jelen found himself with a clear chance: Castellazzi saved and the Meazza
breathed a sigh of relief. After a minute's added time, the sides went in with Inter a goal to the good.
SECOND HALF – The teams started the second half with only one change: De Melo in place of Jelen. In the
48th minute Sneijder won a free-kick. He then took it and found Stankovic who nodded an easy ball down
for Milito, but the Prince from five yards out in front of an open goal managed to send the ball over
the crossbar. Nobody could believe it; Milito himself couldn't believe it, but he received the full
support of the Stadio Meazza and of his team-mates. Rozehnal caused a few hearts to flutter as he hit a
rebound from a free kick, but the shot went well over the bar (54th minute). Javier Zanetti was showing
all of his leadership qualities in this match: providing a barrier in every single part of the field,
running relentlessly and then providing the cross for Milito to put the Nerazzurri 2-0 up on 65 minutes,
as he met the assist from the captain on the right wing to side-foot the ball into the net. The fans
applauded the Prince; but, after thanking Zanetti, with a tear in his eye, it was the Prince who thanked
all of his fans. In the 72nd minute Hazard took an inch-perfect free kick which Castellazzi dived to
punch away for a corner. At the other end Alvarez received a pass from Zarate, dribbled past two
defenders and saw his shot fly inches over the bar (73rd minute). The 79th minute saw Pazzini come on in
place of Zarate, but it was Lille who pulled a goal back on 83 minutes: after a mix-up between Stankovic
and Lucio on the edge of the area, De Melo found himself with a relatively simple tap-in to beat
Castellazzi. When Milito came off in the 90th minute, to be substituted by Obi, he received a standing
ovation.
The other match in Group B between Trabzonspor and CSKA Moscow ended scoreless. The Nerazzurri now top
the group with 9 points: their next match will be on 22 November in Turkey.
