Relentless Benfica close in on title
Benfica 5-0 Olhanense
Benfica are within touching distance of the Liga Sagres championship after a 5-0 hammering of Olhanense in front of an ecstatic Estadio da Luz crowd tonight.
An Oscar Cardozo hat-trick, another sensational Di Maria performance (one goal and two assists) and a Pablo Aimar strike had 65,000 fans singing “campeoes, campeoes, campeoes!” long before the final whistle.
With the Eagles needing a maximum of four points from their final three matches, the game kicked off in a party atmosphere, and the mood was further lifted when the hosts took the lead after just three minutes. Weldon’s cross was cut out by Delson’s outstretched arm for the most obvious of penalties that Cardozo dispatched with aplomb.
Delson red carded
Delson’s personal nightmare was exacerbated five minutes later as a clattering tackle into Di Maria, long after the lithe Argentine had skipped past him, led to a second yellow card and an early bath.
From that moment onwards it was only a question of how many Benfica would score. It looked ugly for Olhanense as a fine individual goal from Di Maria doubled Benfica’s lead on 18 minutes. Olhanense coach Jorge Costa was relieved to see a series of hairline offside decisions go the visitors’ way as the incisive running and passing of Pablo Aimar created several moments of danger.
The Algarve outfit survived without conceding further goals in the first half, but after the break Benfica put their foot on the pedal, with Di Maria again showing why half of Europe is after his signature. A stupendous pass, flicking the ball through to Cardozo behind his standing leg, left the Paraguayan clean through to hammer the ball past the helpless Verissimo.
Deadly duo
Two minutes later the deadly duo were at it again as Di Maria produced a low cross for Cardozo to complete his hat-trick from close range. It was Cardozo’s 24th league goal of the season, a sizeable proportion of which have been set up by his prodigiously talented team-mate.
Benfica scored their fifth ten minutes from time (the seventh game in 2009/10 in which Benfica have score five or more goals) as Aimar took advantage of a couple of lucky ricochets to slot the ball into the net.
Di Maria magic
Di Maria almost rounded things off with what would have been a stupendous goal. A high looping cross was brought down with a magnificent deft touch to tee up a stunning volley smashed towards the net without letting the ball hit the ground that produced an incredible reflex save from Verissimo.
Should Braga fail to win at Naval tomorrow Benfica will be crowned champions. However, most Benfica fans would probably not begrudge a Braga victory, as that would pave the way to what many of the club’s supporters are citing as their dream scenario: clinching the title next weekend at the home of bitter rivals and outgoing champions FC Porto. by Tom Kundert
