Al Arabi begin with victory
Al Arabi, who finished third last season, defeated ninth-placed Al Shamal by a solitary goal in their opening match of the Qatar Football League at the Al Gharrafa Stadium yesterday.
Abdulaziz Karim scored the match-winner in the 76th minute when he made no mistake to convert a penalty after the barren first half.
Both the teams were weak in the field in the first half as Al Shamal concentrated more on defence. Al Arabi started attacking since the beginning of the second half but they failed to convert many of the chances which came their way.
Shamal goalkeeper Eisa Buhakab pouched a powerful shot from Syed Bechir in the 65th minute. Shamal, led by Iraqi Ahmed Salah, made some moves but in vain.

Al Arabi thrashed Al Khor 5-2 yesterday in the Qatar Football League at the Al Rayyan Stadium. Al Khor drew the first blood in the 11th minute via Younus Mahmud.
Abdulaziz Karim restored the parity for Arabi in the 14th minute. Argentinean Amaya netted second and third goals for Arabi in the 34th and 47th minutes, followed by Musaa’d Farhan and Syed Bechir in 69th and 84th minutes respectively. Rashid Rouckey scored the second goal for Khor in the 85th minute.
Both the sides played an offensive game and witnessed the first red card in the league this season with Khor defender Iraqi Hyder Jabbar sent out for rough play.
Al Arabi maintained their position at the top of the standings beating Al Ahli 3-0 in the third week of Qatar Football League yesterday at the Al Gharafa Stadium.
Arabi now have nine points from three games. They downed Al Shamal and Al Khor in the previous two games. After the barren first half, Syed Bechir netted the first goal for Arabi in the 54th minute, while Ahli defender Meshaal Al Enazi scored an own goal to give Arabi a 2-0 lead.
Saad Farhan scored the third goal in the 73rd minute. This was the first loss for Ahli, after they drew both their matches against Al Gharafa and Al Rayyan. Ahli have only two points from their previous two matches.
Ahli's Carlos Pedro and Terbo West of Arabi clashed in a tensed match, resulting in a red card for both of them.
Al Arabi maintained their position atop the Qatar Football League standings beating Al Khartiyat 2-1 yesterday at the Al Wakrah Stadium. The winners were leading by a solitary goal at the end of the first half.
Arabi now have 12 points from four matches, while Al Khartiyat are on the bottom of the standings without any point. The lack of experience in the Khartiyat players was visible when they took on the mighty Arabi side.
Arabi’s Slovenian professional Fabian Spot scored for his side in the fourth minute but despite their rivals’ weaknesses the score remained the same till the breather.
Al Khartiyat’s Egyptian coach Mukhtar Mukhtar changed the strategy and his players surprised the Arabi side with their renewed vigour after the restart.
Khartiyat restored the parity in the 51st minute when Arabi’s Musa Haroon scored an own goal. Arabi tried to mount the pressure on their rivals but Al Khartiyat turned defensive. Musa’ad Farhan scored the match-winner for Arabi in the 53rd minute.
Qatari referee Haroon Mansouri, Salah Ali, Basheer Mahjoub and Yousuf Al Hidous were the match officials.

Anderson stars in Al Rayyan win over Al Arabi
Al Rayyan crushed Al Arabi 5-2 in the fifth week of the Qatar Football League yesterday at the Al Gharafa Stadium. The winners were leading 1-0 at the breather.
With this result, Al Arabi retained the second place with 12 points, while Al Rayyan are on the third spot with 11 points. Al Gharafa maintained their top position with Arabi’s loss with 13 points.
In a jam-packed stadium, Rayyan’s new Brazilian signing Sonny Anderson found the rhythm soon after taking the field in his new club. He drew the first blood for his club in the 29th minute.
The second half witnessed six goals. Musaad Farhan scored an equaliser for Arabi in the 50th minute. Anderson netted the second goal in the 63rd minute. He completed his hat-trick when he found the net in the 69th minute.
Arabi reduced the margin when Farhan scored in the 74th minute.
Anderson netted two more goals in the 83rd and 90th minute of the match.
Anderson showed that he was a prize signing for Rayyan.

Al Gharafa maintained their top position in the Qatar Football League standings after playing a 2-2 drawwith Al Arabi in the sixth week of the Qatar FootballLeague yesterday at the Al Rayyan Stadium.
Al Gharafa now have 14 points, followed by Rayyan, who also have 14 points but trail on the basis of goal difference. Al Arabi are on the third position with 13 points, thanks to their better goal difference than Qatar Sports Club, who are fourth with 13 points.
Arabi controlled the first half scoring two goals in the process. Musaad Farhan netted both the goals for Arabi in the 16th and 30th minutes respectively.
Gharafa fought back after the restart. Gharafa's Bahraini professional A'ala Hubail reduced the margin in the 65th minute. Former France captain Marcel Desailly scored the equaliser for Gharafa in the stoppage time.
The observers feel that the result was fair for both the teams. Gharafa wasted two chances in the second half when shots from Redrigo and Anas Mubarak hit the woodwork.

Gabrial Batistuta misses the last minute penalty for Al-Arabi and drew the ball straight to the hands of the goalkeeper and thus got the game draw against Al-Wakrah in the second match of the seventh round Qatar Football League yesterday.
Al-Wakrah controlling the first half with immaculate tackling and managing to score their first goal in the 16th minute by Ali Qasim, while Al-Arabi came with an equalizer in the 82nd minute through the excellence of Taribu Waist.
Al-Arabi gains 14 points while Al-Wakrah stands with 8 points with this draw match.
