Crespo sad about Italy exit
Planet Football, 15 Sep 2003
HERNAN CRESPO has admitted to having a tinge of sadness about leaving Italy, as he felt he had found
his dream home with Internazionale.
The Argentine superstar was prised away from Inter when Chelsea waved a massive cheque in the face of
the Giuseppe Meazza board.
Crespo has hit back at suggestions that he engineered a move away from Serie A, saying he always
wanted to stay in Italy and win trophies with Inter.
"I am sad that I left Italy, as I always wanted to stay," Crespo told planetfootball.
Having missed out on the scudetto last term, Crespo was looking forward to going one better with the
Milan club - but he joined Chelsea in a near ??17 million eve of transfer deadline day deal.
"My dream was to play for a big team in Italy, and I had finally achieved that," he continued.
"But somebody saw it different and they sold me."
Crespo is adamant that Inter were behind the move rather than his agents.
"Yes (Inter sold me)," he stressed. "Even if they are now telling people that it was me who asked to
leave."
The former Parma and Lazio striker says he was treated wonderfully in Italy and the warmness of the
people will be an abiding memory for him.
"The people are wonderful," he enthused. "In Parma, Roma and Milano I was treated well."
Crespo seems happy to have turned his back on the powerbrokers in Serie A, though, as he added: "The
lack of respect shown by managers of the clubs was bad.
"The newspapers are trying to change things, but here in England football is just a sport, nothing more."
