Real Madrid 1-0 Barcelona (AET): Ronaldo header wins Real the Copa del Rey
April 21, 2011

The starting line-ups

A tight, scrappy game was won by Cristiano Ronaldo’s 103rd minute goal.

Jose Mourinho had to reshuffle his defence with Raul Albiol suspended. Sergio Ramos moved into the centre, and Alvaro Arbeloa came in at right-back. Mourinho also chose to play no true striker – Karim Benzema was dropped with Mesut Ozil back in the side on the right. Ronaldo started ufpront.

Carles Puyol was not risked for a second time, so Javier Mascherano dropped into the centre-back position he’s played a couple of times recently. Jose Pinto was used over Victor Valdes in goal. The rest of the side was as expected.
The game started off very scrappy – there were a lot of free-kicks early on, a few scuffles amongst players, and a stop-start nature to the contest as a whole. This, of course, favoured Real Madrid – who were keen to break up Barcelona’s natural rhythm and make the game more of a battle.

Real press

Tactically, they sprung a slight surprise by pressing Barcelona in the midfield zone early on. Pepe, superb in his holding midfield position at the weekend, swapped roles with Xabi Alonso – so whilst Alonso sat between the lines in a 4-1-4-1 system, Pepe used his energy and strength higher up the pitch, particularly against Xavi Hernandez.

This worked very well for Real. Barcelona’s passing was very poor in the first period, and they missed having Xavi constantly free in space to dictate play. They attempted to get out of the press by dropping Busquets into the defence at times and switching to 3-4-3, but they encountered the same problem – they couldn’t get the ball forward to their attacking trio, and Lionel Messi moved deeper and deeper to pick up the ball, making him less of a goal threat.

Attacking play

Messi’s absence from the final third was particularly obvious because David Villa was woefully out of form and Pedro Rodriguez wasn’t much better before half time. It’s difficult to remember Barcelona creating a good opportunity in the first half.

Real went closest to scoring. Their main tactic was to quickly hit the ball wide and try and catch Barcelona out in the full-back positions – and this resulted in their best chance of the opening period. A long ball into the Barcelona left-back zone brought Pinto out of his goal to clear – then Ozil and Ronaldo worked a crossing opportunity, dragged Gerard Pique out of the back, and Pepe towered over Dani Alves to head against the post. Mourinho was by far the happier manager at half time.

Second half

It was strange, then, that in the second half Real appeared to press less keenly. This is natural as the game goes on (especially at this stage of the season, and when the game ends up going into extra time), and Real’s intensity did dip a little after around 15 minutes anyway. However, this seemed much more of a deliberate tactic, as if Real wanted Barcelona to come onto them more, in order to leave more space at the back to exploit.

The obvious danger in that strategy is that Barcelona imposed themselves on the game. Messi, almost anonymous in the opening period, started to become the game’s key player in his playmaking position, whilst Xavi and Andres Iniesta kept the ball much better, moving up the pitch and making Barca more of a threat.

Key battles

With the two sides matching each other in midfield – and this stand-off only altered when Messi came deep – it was difficult to see where a goal was going to come from. However, whilst the first half was so scrappy that it was hard to identify key battles, the second half had more of a set pattern.

Iniesta v Khedira was a promising contest. Khedira’s job was to close Iniesta down, but he was also the Real central midfielder who had a responsibility to get forward, so it seemed that a chance may be created with one of these players getting in behind the other.

Pedro moved from the right to the left and used his pace up against Arbeloa, cutting inside and hitting the ball into the side netting early on in the second period. His movement is much better than Villa’s, and this also opened up space for Adriano on the overlap – he caught Ozil sleeping a couple of times.

The formations after Adebayor replaced Ozil

Pedro also had the ball in the net later on, but it was disallowed for offside. Barcelona played with more width in the second half, and that event was classic Barcelona – a through ball between centre-back and full-back, for a wide forward coming inside.

That side of the pitch was the key battleground, and Ozil was replaced by Emmanuel Adebayor, with Ronaldo coming to the right. In basic terms this was an attacking move – introducing a true striker – but it also helped Real defensively. Ronaldo pinned back Adriano and Barcelona were less of a danger down that side.

This was the only substitution before Ronaldo’s goal, and for such a tight, cagey game, it was a surprise that neither manager utilised their bench more. Pedro’s switch to the left and then Ronaldo’s switch to the right were the most significant developments, but positionally, little changed amongst the rest of the players.

Extra time

Ronaldo up against Adriano was now the game’s key contest. He went very close to opening the scoring with a move that typified Real’s approach – Pepe put Xavi under pressure and helped win the ball, Alonso picked it up and hit a diagonal ball out to the flank, Ronaldo sped past Adriano and flashed a shot just wide.

Ronaldo eventually got the better of the Brazilian to score – but it was in the air, rather than on the ground. Angel di Maria got past Alves and lofted a cross to the far post, where Ronaldo produced a powerful header back across goal. It was very similar to Pepe’s effort in the first half, and has been a route of attack all season for Real - in Mourinho’s first home game against Osasuna, it was notable how Ronaldo and Benzema (fielded wide) came in from their flanks to provide an aerial threat at the far post.

Guardiola couldn’t change things at 1-0 down. David Villa was removed with Ibrahim Afellay on in his place, but Real were always likely to drop deep. Barcelona really needed more of a presence in the box, but Guardiola didn’t have a true physical striker at his disposal. Real weren’t really hanging on – they saw out the extra time period confidently.

Conclusion

A tactical victory for Mourinho – he used Pepe higher up the pitch, used Ronaldo as a striker, told his side to press in midfield early on, and disturbed Barcelona’s passing with a proactive attitude without the ball.

Barca were well on top between 45 and 70 minutes, but Real defended well in this period, with Pedro against Arbeloa looking likely to produce a goal.

Real’s main strategy was to get the ball wide quickly, and in producing three great chances through this route (the Pepe header and the two  Ronaldo efforts in extra time), they probably created more true goalscoring opportunities than Barcelona

Tottenham 3-3 Arsenal: chalkboards
April 21, 2011

The starting line-ups

Another exciting north London derby finished all-square at White Hart Lane.

Harry Redknapp chose to use both Peter Crouch and Roman Pavlyuchenko upfront together again, with Rafael van der
Vaart going to the right in place of Aaron Lennon.

Arsene Wenger brought in Abou Diaby for Jack Wilshere, and Bacary Sagna replaced Emmanuel Eboue at right-back, but he used the same front four as against Liverpool.

This was a very open, exciting game. Both sides needed the victory, and both attacked relentlessly throughout the game. Tottenham’s urgency was because, in basic terms, that is how a 4-4-2 often needs to play against a 4-2-3-1 – to bypass the midfield battle, get the ball wide and then into the penalty box quickly, in order to take advantage of having two strikers.

That said, Redknapp’s use of Rafael van der Vaart on the flank was in recognition of the fact that Spurs needed to ‘narrow it up’ (see the report of the Arsenal v Spurs game earlier this season) to prevent being overrun in the middle of the pitch.

Equally, Arsenal wanted to catch Tottenham’s defence high up the pitch. Spurs defended brilliantly in this fixture last year by playing deep and narrow, but with Robin van Persie dragging the centre-backs around well here, Arsenal wanted space to break into.

The result of this was an end-to-end game – here’s some chalkboards on the key points:

Bale quiet

Having been named PFA Player of the Year the previous weekend, all eyes were on Gareth Bale to turn in a performance worthy of his new status.

He came up against the PFA’s choice as right-back in the team of the year – Bacary Sagna, who largely kept Bale quiet for the second time this season. Bale lost all eight challenges in the match, following just a 25% success rate earlier in the season in the fixture at the Emirates.

Assou-Ekotto

Arsenal didn’t defend well enough against Spurs’ left-back, Benoit Assou-Ekotto. He was given too much time on the ball to drift long passes towards Peter Crouch at the far post, and Arsenal had to try and deal with his knock-downs inside the box.

<flash> by Guardian Chalkboards

Szczesny / van Persie

Tottenham often looked to press Arsenal’s back four when goalkeeper Wojiech Szczesny had the ball. This meant he had to kick the ball downfield, but Robin van Persie hardly ever beat Michael Dawson or William Gallas in the air – by the end of the game, he’d effectively given up:

<flash> by Guardian Chalkboards

Walcott goal

Arsenal’s first goal was a classic 4-2-3-1 v 4-4-2 goal. The central playmaker, Cesc Fabregas, received the ball in space between the lines, which forced one of the centre-backs towards play – this space was then exploited by another player. The move was very similar to the way Holland tried to catch out Spain in the World Cup (where Arjen Robben was denied by Iker Casillas) particularly the way Walcott took up a very central position.

<flash> by Guardian Chalkboards

Nasri goal

Samir Nasri’s strike was a fantastic example of how effective one-twos can be in football, when combined with good movement. From picking the ball up on the touchline, he plays three one-twos to get into a central position, before unleashing a good shot into the net.

<flash> by Guardian Chalkboards

Huddlestone

Tom Huddlestone was another player who scored a fantastic goal, but his overall performance was disappointing. He has a reputation as a good long-distance passer, but he gave the ball away far too frequently in this game.

<flash> by Guardian Chalkboards

Clearances

The different patterns on the clearance chalkboards reflects the different threats of either side – almost all Arsenal’s clearances are from inside the box, when Tottenham played longish balls in from wide areas, whilst much more of Tottenham’s are outside the penalty area, as Arsenal tried to pass the ball through the middle.

Schalke 2 – 1 Inter Milan: Schalke Make History
Posted on April 13, 2011 by Cristian Nyari

Introduction – An opportunity to make the record books

Only a handful of clubs in Europe can boast a greater attendance record than Schalke.  They are renowned for their passionate fan base and are one of the more storied sides in German football.  Despite that history, Schalke have not been too successful in Europe, never getting past the quarterfinal stage of the Champions League.  Before that, their biggest achievement came in 1997 when they beat, ironically enough, Inter Milan on penalties to win the UEFA Cup.
The tie against Inter this season provided Die Knappen with a chance to make history.  One foot was in the door given their impressive 5-2 win in the first leg.  But football is unpredictable and a look back through the history books proves that anything can happen at this stage.

As defending champions, Inter came into this second leg with the dual pressure of living up to last season’s achievements while making up the three-goal deficit from the first leg.  Leonardo came under scrutiny for his side’s performance in the last couple of weeks and it is fair to say that his future at the club very much hangs in the balance of this outcome.  As forgone a conclusion as it may be, Inter supporters wanted a good performance out of their side and few teams in Europe have the experience this Inter side does.

All eyes turned to what was sure to be another exciting affair.  How would Schalke line up?  Would they sit back and defend the lead?  Was Inter capable of a historic comeback without conceding?

Rangnick lines up more defensively

With the suspension of key attacker Farfan and a comfortable three-goal lead, Rangnick had to reshuffle a bit.  Metzelder returned to the line up, Zoro mask included, while 19-year-old Matip moved into central midfield with the other 19-year-old Papadopoulos.  Jurado meanwhile moved out to the left while Baumjohan filled in for Farfan on the right.

Despite Rangnick’s propensity for attack this line up made the team automatically more defensive.  Whereas Jurado played a more attacking role in the first leg out of the center, Matip and Papadopolous are both sitting midfielders.  The shape therefore lent itself to be a lot more defensive than what we saw in the first leg.

Schalke could not take the result of the first leg for granted though and while his team was more cautious he did not opt out of attack.   Rather, Rangnick instructed his fullbacks to be more proactive in their approach.  This made for some interesting early battles between the teams’ two Japanese fullbacks, Uchida and Nagatomo.

Compared to the first leg, Schalke were a lot more comfortable sitting back and absorbing Inter’s attacks.  Baumjohan and Jurado dropped back quite a bit to hold off Inter’s forward runs and Schalke hoped to exploit Inter on the break rather than seeking to break up their play.  This was very reminiscent of Inter’s strategy against Barcelona in last year’s semi final.  The more the time on the clock winded down the more comfortable Schalke became however and the tide started to shift slowly.

Starting line ups with average movement and positioning.

Inter chase game from beginning

Raul rounds Cesar to effectively decide the tie.

Leonardo’s tactics were very straightforward, push up to make up the huge deficit. He started Milito and Eto’o up front again and moved Zanetti into midfield while fielding Nagatomo at left back after his good performance against Chievo over the weekend.   Inter needed four unanswered goals to advance so there was not a lot of room to sit back.  They needed to take the imitative and press forward.

Inter were much more effective using their width this time around.  Nagatomo was a threat down the left compared to the more conservative Chivu.  And with Baumjohan and Jurado not being natural wide midfielders Inter had more room to operate down the flanks.

Because they needed to score, Inter were always going to expose themselves defensively and that gave Schalke every opportunity to counter.  Chasing such a big lead is always a compromise and rarely are clubs able to send wave after wave of attack forward without giving up space at the back.  They had no choice however and the first half saw most of the action in Schalke’s half as Inter pushed up ferociously.  It was just a matter of time before Schalke pounced on the break and punished Inter’s defensive neglect.

Raul’s goal before half time came exactly under such a circumstance.  Jurado picked up the ball near the halfway line and with the Inter defense retreating he slipped it through to an unmarked Raul.  The former Madrid player rounded Cesar brilliantly and put his side up.  Inter now needed a goal every 9 minutes in the second half to progress and even though Motta pulled a goal back in the second half the tie was effectively over.

Interchangeable Schalke attack

Rangnick instructed his central midfielders to sit in front of his backline while Jurado and Baumjohan helped to cover for their fullbacks.  Matip was very busy covering for Sarpei, who was trying his best to hold off Maicon’s forward runs while Papadopoulos was once again given the task of tightly marking Inter’s playmaker Sneijder.

That in turn left unsecured space in the middle that was ripe for the picking by the Italians.  Edu and Raul were key in filling that vacuum.  The two strikers were instructed to stay deep in their own half rather than wait up field for the counter.

As such, Raul and Edu served two important purposes.  For one, they provided the extra manpower in midfield against Motta, Stankovic and Zanetti.  Two, they made it possible for Schalke to play in tight quarters and transition quickly out of their own half.  With Inter playing a high line and advancing as often as they did it was important to break as quickly as possible and catch them out of position.  Had Raul and Edu not dropped back the long ball tactic could easily have prevented Schalke from holding off Inter as effectively as they did.  Both were fantastic in their respective roles, particularly Raul, whose performance over the two legs will be talked about for a long time in Gelsenkirchen.

Jurado and Baumjohan were also crucial in Schalke’s link up and performed a dual function of being Schalke’s primary attacking midfielders and linking up their quick counter attacks.  The much-maligned Jurado has often been played out wide this season to little effect as he constantly drifted inside.  Rather than seeing it as a weakness, Rangnick seems to have embraced Jurado’s natural playmaking tendencies and encouraged him to move centrally whenever Schalke had possession.  Before his move to Schalke, Baumjohan played as a central playmaker as well as so Rangnick effectively deployed two natural central playmakers in front of his holding midfielders, a smart move when wanting to link up any play out of the back.

Edu and Raul were key in covering exposed space.

Physical fitness key

Raul's heatmap shows not only his great contribution but the vast amount space covered.

Magath’s footprint on this Schalke side may be tarnished but his influence in preparing his side physically cannot be denied.  One side looked fresh until the final whistle while the other was left gasping for air after just 45 minutes.  Farfan came out recently in strong opposition to Magath’s training methods but the team as a while seems to have benefited from the grueling regiment.

The two legs against Valencia and Inter saw Schalke outrun and outwork their opponents.  And while Farfan has bemoaned those methods Raul has stated that this is the fittest he has ever felt in his career so there is something to be said about the conditioning amongst Schalke players which has played a big part in their Champions League run this season.

Preview ahead of Manchester game

Last weekend Rangnick played Schmitz, Schalke’s left back for most of the season, in front of current left back Sarpei.  Surely this was done to cover for what is arguably Schalke’s biggest weakness.  A lot of Inter’s attacks came down Schalke’s left side and Matip constantly had to move over to help out.  Against United, Schalke will face their most difficult task considering Nani is normally deployed on the right for them.  No doubt that Ferguson will utilize the Portuguese winger in such a respect and instruct him to continuously attack Schalke’s left back.

It can also be said that Leonardo initially underestimated Schalke and that is why Rangnick’s men were able in large part to surprise Inter in the first leg and create such an advantage for themselves.  Ferguson on the other hand was present at this match and is one of the most astute tactical minds in the game.

Rangnick will have to be at his best to match Ferguson’s experience and know-how.  It will also be interesting to see if he will continue to utilize two holding midfielders against United and Rooney who has been dropping back to great effect in Europe this season.

Raul's heatmap shows not only his great contribution but the vast amount space covered.

Manchester United 1-0 Everton: United dominate but leave it late
April 23, 2011

The starting line-ups

Another poacher’s goal from Javier Hernandez, and another late victory for Manchester United.

Sir Alex Ferguson made many changes to his side, bringing in Darron Gibson and Johnny Evans for rare starts. Wayne Rooney played off Javier Hernandez.

David Moyes was without Johnny Heitinga, so brought Jack Rodwell into the central midfield zone alongside Phil Neville, with Tony Hibbert at right-back. Tim Cahill was on the bench.

The game went through three distinct stages: (a) in the first half, United were all over Everton and should have scored a few goals (b) for the first twenty minutes of the second, the game was much more even and (c) Ferguson’s substitutions helped United stamp their authority on the match once again in the final stages.

United dominance

In the first half, the ball spent barely any time in Manchester United’s half of the pitch. The tactical battle was almost entirely about United’s front four against Everton’s defence and two holding midfielders – and though United frequently found space and created promising situations, their final ball into the box was often wasteful.

Everton have generally got things right away from home against the top sides this season – when Gareth Bale mania was in full force, Moyes produced a clever plan to nullify Tottenham at White Hart Lane, he set up very well at the Emirates to deny Arsenal the dominance they’re used to at home – before Everton faded late on, his tactics away at Manchester City produced a great defensive display and a 2-1 win, and he also beat Chelsea in the FA Cup at Stamford Bridge.

United tried to play down their right, exploiting the space behind Leighton Baines

Here, however, they had problems in the first half, and Their main problems stemmed from the pace of Hernandez. Everton are usually good at keeping it tight between the lines, but the Mexican’s sheer pace forced Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin deeper. (They would also have been well aware that they were opened up by United earlier in the season at Goodison Park by Dimitar Berbatov running onto a through ball and finishing well, so they quickly dropped deep.)

Of course, this opened up space for Rooney, who played ‘in the hole’, in the role he’s mastered in recent weeks, particularly in the games against Chelsea. Phil Neville was Everton’s deepest midfielder, to the right, and Jack Rodwell moved higher up the pitch towards the left, so Rooney found space by moving into the inside-right channel, between the lines. Rodwell was slow to close Rooney down.

In fact, most of Everton’s problems occurred in that zone of the pitch. Leighton Baines is one of Everton’s best attacking threats, but as we’ve noted throughout the season, Everton are also vulnerable down that side of the pitch defensively. As Baines tried to move forward into the attack, both Rooney and Hernandez moved in behind, and United were keen to hit balls into that space – see the opportunity for Nani that came after Antonio Valencia outmuscled Baines.

Nani was disappointing – Tony Hibbert looked vulnerable early on but eventually got into the game and defended well. Nani can play on either side, but he remains much better on the right – when used on the left, he’s too keen to come inside and use his right foot, making him much more predictable. His delivery here was poor.

Second half

Moyes got little from Jermaine Beckford or Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, so brought on Victor Anichebe with Tim Cahill just off him. Anichebe moved to the left and helped pin back Fabio, whilst Leon Osman on that side also did a good defensive job. With John O’Shea hardly a great attacking outlet on the other side, United were much less dangerous with less drive from full-back.

Rodwell also picked up his game and was much more aware of Rooney’s movement in behind him. He couldn’t afford to drop goalside of Rooney and completely concede the midfield battle to United, so instead worked on preventing balls from the midfielders and full-backs being played into Rooney. United suddenly looked a little nervous, and Everton held the ball better.

United rally late on

A couple of factors combined to get United back in the game. Fitness was key – on a very hot day, United had 61% of possession, and Everton had to work very hard without the ball. Equally important, though, was United’s ability to change the game from the bench.

Michael Owen and Ryan Giggs came on for Nani and Gibson in the most eye-catching moves, but equally important was Patrice Evra’s introduction for O’Shea. With first Nani and then Rooney playing on the left and always looking to bring the ball inside, Evra stretched the play, made United more dynamic when spreading play to the flanks (Anderson should be praised for consistently good, positive diagonal balls) and from 70 minutes onwards they were all over Everton again.

<flash> by Guardian Chalkboards

Despite all the changes, it was Valencia down the right, the main battleground early on in the game, that produced the goal. He put pressure on Distin to win the ball, dragged the Frenchman out to the flank, and then his deflected cross found Hernandez at the far post for what we can start to call a ‘classic’ Hernandez goal.

Conclusion

A few changes established United’s position in the ascendency, but equally their persistence and commitment to their usual tactics – get the ball out wide, and get men into the box – proved crucial at the end of the game. The good movement from Hernandez, Owen and Rooney inside the penalty area was particularly notable.

Moyes’ switches midway through the game allowed Everton to compete – but making two changes so early meant he couldn’t react to United’s three attack-minded substitutions in the second half.

Schalke v Manchester United: tactical preview
April 26, 2011

Possible starting line-ups

Schalke have reached their first-ever European Cup semi, whilst United are in their fourth in the last five seasons.

Team news

The headline news is that Dimitar Berbatov hasn’t travelled because of a groin strain. On face value, the absence of the Premier League’s top scorer should be quite a blow, but considering that Ferguson has only picked Berbatov for one of United’s last ten Champions League knockout games, it really shouldn’t cause too much concern.

Darren Fletcher is also still out. He is more of a loss, as he would have been used in the centre of midfield. Aside from that, Sir Alex Ferguson has no major injury concerns.

Ralf Rangnick is waiting to see whether centre-back Benedikt Höwedes is fit enough to play. If not, midfield Joel Matip can drop in to play centre-back.

Selection decisions

Rangnick’s back four and front two pretty much pick themselves – with the exception of the left-back spot, where Sergio Escudero’s younger legs could be preferred to veteran Hans Sarpei.

His major decisions are in midfield. We can assume that Jefferson Farfan will start wide on the right, and it also seems likely that Greek youngster Kyriakos Papadopoulos still play in a deep midfield position. He, like Matip, is another who can play either at centre-back or in the centre of midfield, and he’ll probably be told to stick close to Wayne Rooney, having done a good marking job on Wesley Sneijder in Schalke’s previous tie.

The choice in the midfield is between playing the creative Jurado in the centre, with Alexander Baumjohann providing another attacking outlet on the left flank, or to ask Jurado to drift inside from the left, and insert another more sturdy central midfielder – probably Matip, but possibly Peer Kluge. It essentially depends on how open Rangnick wants his midfield to be – against Inter, Schalke often looked vulnerable to direct attacks down the centre, but Leonardo’s side were too ponderous to be able to exploit these gaps. United won’t be as foolish.

Ferguson’s usual decision is whether to play 4-4-2, his natural shape, or switch to a 4-5-1 to give himself extra protection in the centre of the pitch. A 4-4-2 seems more likely, though, for various reasons – but chiefly because Schalke aren’t a side United should have problems with in the centre, and also because the German side’s backline often looks very prone to pace. That would encourage the use of Javier Hernandez upfront, with Rooney in the hole. From there, United could easily revert to 4-5-1 should they need to, taking advantage of Rooney’s versatility, as they did late on away at Chelsea.

Ferguson’s selections in big games recently have been very unpredictable. Who expected Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick in the centre against Chelsea? Or Darron Gibson and John O’Shea against Arsenal (with the slight caveat that he was resting players) ? Considering how well Giggs and Carrick did in that tie, it seems likely they’ll be used again. Carrick was rested at the weekend in preparation for this contest, and his patient passing style may be vital to United’s gameplan.

On the flanks, Park Ji-Sung is made for this sort of match, in order to nullify one of the opposition full-backs. The other choice would be between Antonio Valencia and Nani. Nani’s form has dipped recently after Valencia’s return has pushed him to the right, but Ferguson may prefer Nani for his versatility. The last time United travelled to Germany, to play Bayern, Ferguson indicated that he left out Valencia (in favour of Park and Nani) because those two had the ability to switch if needed, whereas Valencia was restricted to the right. Still, on form, it would probably be Valencia who gets the nod.

The other decision is at right-back, between Rafael and John O’Shea. Rafael has become more trustworthy since this time last year, but O’Shea’s big game experience might be favoured. In truth, Rafael’s pace would be a better bet against Baumjohann and O’Shea’s positional sense would be more useful against Jurado – Ferguson’s selection there may be influenced by how, and who, he thinks Schalke will play.

Key areas

The most important part of Schalke’s gameplan against Inter (and to a certain extent against Valencia, although that was under the previous management) was to switch play across the pitch to the full-backs, and take advantage of the fact that they were constantly in space. This won’t happen against United, though – if there’s one thing Ferguson has been good at in recent years in European games like this, it’s been his ability to nullify opposition full-backs, most famously with his use of Park.

Therefore, Schalke will have to construct attacks differently. Direct wing play is one option – Patrice Evra is a fine full-back but Farfan will fancy his chances in 1 v 1 situations, but the key man will be Raul. United lack a midfield destroyer and Nemanja Vidic can be uncomfortable coming out of defence to pick up deep-lying forwards. Therefore, Ferguson’s side may be prone between the lines – and whilst Raul’s goalscoring ability will be a threat, his link-up play is even more important.

Raul has also been impressive this season with his performances without the ball. Against Valencia and Inter he’s dropped onto the opposition’s holding midfielder in the defensive phase of play, so it’s likely to see him occupying Carrick in this match. United may have to work harder to keep the ball, so the passing ability of Rio Ferdinand, stepping out from the back, and Rooney, dropping into midfield to scamper away from Papadopoulos, will be important in getting the ball from flank to flank.

United’s usual strategy away in Europe is quite cautious – reasonably happy with a 0-0, delighted with a 0-1. This might be a rare occasion when Ferguson feels the need to break more quickly, though. Schalke can be vulnerable to rapid breaks, especially if they play Jurado in the centre and therefore have three attacking midfielders in the side, and pace at the back remains a problem. This year’s Champions League first legs haven’t been as tight as usual – as Schalke know all too well after winning 2-5 in the last round – so a cagey match here isn’t a given.
