Oleguer misses Chelsea game
   
      
Squad in hotel

The squad and the technical staff are staying together tonight in a city hotel ahead of the game, whilst one of the 19 will have to be left out of the final 18 permitted by UEFA for the match.  
  
  
  
  Frank Rijkaard concluded his press conference on Tuesday by naming his squad for Wednesday's game. Oleguer is out and youngsters Messi and Damià are called up.


With 19 players named in the squad, it's the absence of defender Oleguer Presas that makes the news. The Catalan, who missed the game against Mallorca at the weekend, has not recovered in time from his lower back muscle injury .

On the positive side, Messi, who was in the squad at the weekend, and Damia, who makes his debut in a Champions League squad are both available, as are winter signings Demetrio Albertini and Maxi López.

Oleguer back in action


  Oleguer Presas is back in the squad for this weekend's game against Numancia after missing the encounters with Mallorca and Chelsea. Víctor Valdés has also been included after he recovered from the knock he picked up in midweek.

The return of Oleguer to the squad sees Leo Messi and Damiá drop back down to the B team, for whom they will play this weekend. Messi was in the squad for both the Mallorca and the Chelsea match, while Damiá was called in for the Champions League game.

Argentine striker Lionel Messi (groin strain) and Catalan defender Damià Abella (thigh strain) continued with their individual training programmes on Thursday to recover from their respective knocks. These two young players from Barca B normally train with the senior squad and have made a number of appearances with the first team.

A depleted squad for training


After a two-day break, the squad was back in training on Tuesday morning for the first of three sessions scheduled this week by Frank Rijkaard. With nine players away on international duty, it was a pretty quiet affair. Reporting to La Masía were: goalkeepers Víctor Valdés and Jorquera, defenders Belletti, Sylvinho, Oleguer and Fernando Navarro, midfielders Gerard and Albertini and forwards Maxi and Rubén, the latter from the reserve squad.

Damià and Messi, who are still recovering from their respective injuries, also made a brief appearance on the training grounds before returning to the treatment room.

Larsson, Damià and Messi

The Swedish striker and the two Barca youngsters also worked out on the pitch next to La Masia. Larsson is the final stretch of his comeback from his knee injury and he worked with Jaime Jardi, while Damia Abella and Lionel Messi had individual coaching sessions as they bid to recover from their knocks. Damia has a pulled thigh muscle, while Messi has a groin strain.

Italian midfielder Demetrio Albertini has a calf strain and was unable to train on Tuesday. However, Damià and Messi are continuing with their recovery programmes and were able to work out on the pitch today.

Frank Rijkaard will be pleased to see his international stars back at the Nou Camp though, of the nine players, only Xavi and Iniesta were able to train on Thursday. Damià and Messi also returned to training with the squad after recovering from their injury problems.

In spite of the day off, a number of senior squad players were in the Nou Camp on Tuesday morning including Motta, Larsson and Edmilson who continued with their lengthy recovery processes from their respective knee injuries.

Márquez and Damià worked out in the gym while Giuly and Deco relaxed with a massage. Young Argentine striker Messi continued with his schedule of exercises to overcome his recent injury problem.

  A number of players from the senior squad plus youngsters from Barca B and C took part in a practice game in the Miniestadi on Wednesday. Thiago Motta took the chance to improve his match fitness.


While the players who took part in the Getafe match trained at La Masía, the rest of the squad went to the Miniestadi under the supervision of Eusebio and Albert Roca to play a practice game of 30 minutes each half together with members of Barca B and C. The senior squad team won 2-0, with goals from Gerard and Messi, from the penalty spot. One of the most interesting aspects of the game was the presence of Thiago Motta, who is still short of match fitness after his long injury layoff. Two other players who caught the eye were Leo Messi and the reserve squad's young Frenchman, Ludovic Sylvestre.


Goals in the second half

The first half was fairly even but after the break the side containing the senior squad reserves gradually took control. In the 11th minute, Gerard seized on a ball robbed by Ludovic to control and score with a hard shot from outside the area which went in the top left-hand corner of the goal defended by Javi Ruiz. A great shot.

With Maxi, Christian and Messi all very active in attack, the chances kept on coming. Messi was at the centre of the majority of the most eye-catching moves and it was the young Argentine who ran onto Motta's through ball only to be brought down by Javi Ruiz in the penalty area. Messi himself converted the spot kick just before the final whistle.

On similar lines, Laporta also singled out the goal scored by Eto'o, which finally broke the deadlock in the second half. "His goal gave us plenty of breathing space. It was a great goal, like so many he has scored this season, and he's winning us a lot of points. After that we controlled the game and found an excellent opportunity from which Messi was able to score the second."

Laporta used .Messi's goal as an excuse to compliment the work being done with the younger players. "He demonstrated that he is a class act by converting the goal the way he did. The fact that Messi is getting a game and that players like Iniesta are being handed such responsible roles is good to see."

  The league championship is surely now just a matter of time after Eto'o and Messi strikes were enough to bring Barça the three points and all but condemn Albacete to second division football. Barça are six points clear at the top of the league with just four games left to play.


Delight for Messi

In the final minute, Ronaldinho chipped a delicate ball to substitute Leo Messi to lob home for what would have been his first official goal for Barcelona, but the referee adjuged the Argentinian to have been in an offside position. But merely seconds later, and in an almost identical move, Messi lobbed Valbuena yet again from Ronaldinho chip, and this time was able to celebrate a goal that secured a 2-0 win and a giant's step towards the Spanish league title.

The record holder

Paulino Alcántara is still the youngest player to play and score in a Barca shirt, though not in the Spanish league. He played for Barca between 1912 and 1927, scoring 357 goals in 357 matches. He made his debut on 25th February 1912 in the Championship of Catalonia, scoring a hat trick in the 9-0 defeat of Català. The Spanish league started in the 1928-29 season.  
  
  
  
  Lionel Messi's goal against Albacete on Sunday makes him Barca's youngest La Liga goal scorer in the history of the Club, at the age of just 17 years 10 months and 7 days.


Barca's 2-0 win against Albacete in the Nou Camp will go down in the history of the Club and the young Argentine striker has set a new record for all aspiring players to beat.

Messi is having a great season. He made his debut on 17th October against Espanyol in the Montjuïc Olympic stadium (0-1 to Barca with a goal from Deco), describing it as "a dream come true". At the age of 17 years, 3 months and 23 he had become the second youngest players to take part in an official match with Barca, beaten only by Paulino Alcántara.

His goal on Sunday has given him the record over some illustrious predecessors. Xavi scored his first goal away to Valladolid (0-1) on 20th December 1998 when he was 18 years and 11 months old. Jofre, now with Levante, scored at the age of 18 years and 4 months against Salamanca in the Nou Camp (1-4), while Toni Velamazán, now with Espanyol, scored at the age of 18 years and 9 months in Barca's 1-5 away victory Betis in the 1995-96 season.

A difficult beginning

Lionel Messi' beginnings with the Club were anything but easy. He joined from Newell's Old Boys at the beginning of 2001 but was only able to play two games with the youth team because of injury problems. The following season, he had to wait until February due to problems with paperwork but was finally able to take part in the youth squad's triumphal season.

Meteoric rise

But it was in the 2002-2003 season that Messi's career really took off, when his youth team won every title on offer and broke all the goal scoring records. The breakthrough came the following season when he moved up to Barca C and helped the squad turn round a run of fifteen matches with only one win. He then made the leap to Barca B. He also took part in a friendly with the senior squad for the official inauguration of Porto's new stadium.

Fulfilling his promise

This year, Messi is part of the Barca B squad although he has been called up to the senior squad on a regular basis. He's played seven league matches, one in the Kings Cup and one in the Champions league. He's also made his international debut with the Argentine national side in the South American under-20 championship where, despite his age, he was one of the outstanding stars.

Practice games

After the usual ball control work, the players took part in a practice game in which they were restricted to just two touches of the ball. They then moved on to a standard practice game that the reserves won 2-1, with goals from Leo Messi, Thiago Motta and Deco.

Thanks to the youth players

The up and coming youngsters played a major role in the first part of the season, helping to fill the spaces left by injured first teamers. But now that almost everybody is back to full fitness, it is only players like Messi and Damià that are getting called up. Rijkaard said the following on the subject "I am happy to say that the reserve team players have done a lot to help out, and I think the club philosophy should always be that. But with an almost complete squad and at this stage of the season, we need experienced players. Once we have finished the job, then I'll be able to look at some of the talented reserves again."

  Barcelona's championship triumph sees players like Carles Puyol, Victor Valdes, Andres Iniesta, Gerard, Thiago Motta and Gabri all enjoy the first title success of their careers.

Youngsters such Albert Jorquera, Ruben, Damia and Leo Messi are also picking up their first medals. The only player in the squad who has won a medal with the club before is Xavi, who was part of Louis Van Gaal's side that won the title in 1989-1999.
