Classy Benfica stroll into next round
Benfica 4-0 Hertha Berlin
Benfica became the first team into the last 16 of the Europa League after a comfortable 4-0 victory over Bundesliga basement dwellers Hertha Berlin. Goals from Pablo Aimar, Oscar Cardozo (2) and Javi Garcia confirmed the Portuguese team’s superiority.
Such was gulf in class between the two teams one was left perplexed as to how the Germans had more than held their own in the first leg in Berlin last week. Benfica cut through the Hertha defence at will, with Angel Di Maria, Fabio Coentrao and Javier Saviola especially running amok.
Jorge Jesus’ team have now scored 17 goals in 5 Europa League matches at the Estadio da Luz and on this form the Eagles will feel they have a realistic chance of going far in the tournament.
The hosts took a firm grip of proceedings from the off, and not even a sudden hailstorm midway through the first half could knock the Lisbon club out of their rhythm.

Pablo Aimar got the only goal of the half, exchanging passes with compatriot Saviola before beating Hertha goalkeeper Drobny, but chances galore went begging with Di Maria, Saviola, Cardozo, Ruben Amorim and Maxi Pereira all peppering the goal with efforts.
At the other end of the pitch Hertha danger-man Raffael forced Julio Cesar into a super save with a curling effort, but overall the visitors must have been happy to go into the break just one goal down.
More goals duly arrived in the second half. Di Maria was the chief protagonist as a typically jinking run down the left flank earned him room to cross perfectly over Drobny for Oscar Cardozo to head into the empty net.
The two combined again brilliantly for Benfica’s fourth, as Cardozo showed good technique to collect Di Maria’s dinked cross and fire into the corner of the net with his left foot. In between Cardozo’s brace Javi Garcia got in on the act as he followed up a poorly defended corner to fire into the net.
Hertha were grateful to see Benfica slow up as a flurry of substitutions broke up the rhythm of the match. Next up for Benfica it’s likely to be Lucho Gonzalez’s Marseille, with the French giants well placed after a 3-1 away victory against FC Copenhagen in the first leg.

“We were a team that presented football of great quality. It’s not because we played one or two less brilliant matches that we are a bad team. We have been consistent throughout the season but it’s normal that one or other match a team plays less well – this happened to us and for sure it will happen again before the end of the season.
“Our overriding priority is to win the championship, where we have been the strongest and played the best football in Portugal so far. We want to go far in the Europa League, but if we have to put one put one competition aside, we are not going to let up in the Liga Sagres.”
