Commentators of ESPN here were also mad at the refree. One of them said, "There are only two types of umpires in World Cup. Bad and worse. And today we have seen a worse referee."

BTW, this referee was suspended in 2002 because of irregularities.

You also watched the match on ABC? I don't think a red card is inappropriate either. Americans like violently physical contacts. The commentators kept on complaining, "That's not a fould. We have seen so many plays like that......" Perhaps they thought it was an American football game
