New signing Gabriel Heinze refutes claims he was a disruptive influence at Paris Saint Germain, saying he is completely committed to the United cause.

Heinze, 25, who signed from the French club last month in a £6.9m deal, refuses to accept the claims from his former coach at PSG, Luis Hernandez, that he was a troublesome member of their squad.

"eople have said many things about me in the past," Heinze is quoted as saying in the Daily Mirror. "They say that I am a player who makes things difficult for the manager.

"But this is a dream for me and when I go to Manchester I will use my energy in the right way for the football club."

"I still cannot believe I am a Manchester United player. It's every footballer's dream. I only spent a few days in Manchester and then I had to leave, so I had no time to think about it."

As reported on Tuesday on ManUtd.com, Gabriel Heinze has been named in Argentina's provisional Olympic Games squad by coach Marcelo Bielsa, meaning the player could miss the start of the season if he makes the final cut.

The Olympic squad must comprise of players under the age of 23, although each nation may select three 'over-age' players.

The final squad must be whittled down to 18 players, and Heinze is currently among those considered for a place.

Heinze is currently away with Argentina on Copa America duty, but if he were to be included in squad to travel to Athens, he could be unavailable for selection at United until 28 August, when the Olympic Games Final takes place.

Heinze in soup with Ferguson

Gabriel Heinze, Manchester United's costly yet elusive summer signing, is running the serious risk of causing irreparable damage to his relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson after the latest breakdown in contact between the Argentinian international and his increasingly irritated manager.
Since learning Heinze was taken to hospital after Argentina's 4-0 defeat of Costa Rica in the Olympics on Sunday, Ferguson revealed last night he had been desperately trying to get hold of the £6.9m signing, only to discover the defender has not left his mobile number with anyone at the club.

Subsequent attempts to contact him via his agent and the Argentinian football authorities have also failed and an exasperated Ferguson was still in the dark about the seriousness of Heinze's injury until he switched on his television yesterday to see him back in the Argentina team. Although initially relieved, Ferguson is livid that Heinze has not contacted his new employers.

"We understand he got an injury but nobody from Argentina has even been in touch," said Ferguson, making little attempt to conceal his irritation ahead of tonight's Champions League qualifying tie against Dinamo Bucharest. "We read that it's a hip injury and that he was taken to hospital, so it was obviously a concern. But we haven't been able to get hold of him."

Heinze fears cold shoulder

Manchester United new boy Gabriel Heinze concedes that he has already angered his paymasters despite not having yet trained with the club.

The Argentina international has only now arrived at Old Trafford after completing a big money move from Paris Saint Germain, following his involvement in the Olympics.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was less than enamored about having to wait for his new signing and the player admits he now has to win over his manager.

''Things haven't started the way they should have done but I'm sure they'll change,'' Heinze told The Sun.

''My situation isn't easy. The directors are a bit annoyed.

''But I always did what I felt was correct. I'm never going to say 'no' to Argentina.

''There won't be any kind of reprisal because I didn't do anything wrong.''

Despite his unsettled start to life in England, Heinz insists he is excited at the prospect of playing at Old Trafford.

''I'm going to put my life on the line for United,'' he continued. ''I want to respond to what has happened through effort on the pitch.

''I'm going to show I can shine in the Premiership.

''United are an extraordinary team and will raise themselves

Heinze Arrives In Manchester

Gabriel Heinze arrived at Manchester United's training ground on Tuesday - three months after he signed for the Reds from Paris Saint Germain.

The £6.9million signing has had a busy summer schedule - he helped Argentina to the Copa America final, where they lost to Brazil.

And he was one of Argentina's three permitted over-23 players in the Olympic games in Athens, where they won Olympic Gold.

Heinze's international commitments have meant he is yet to kick a ball for United, and his contact with manager Sir Alex Ferguson had been limited to telephone conversation.

Fergie sees the tough-tackling defender as United's left-back for the season.

However, he arrived at Carrington on Tuesday morning and pulled on a United shirt for the first time.

Heinze said recently: "My situation isn't easy. [United's] directors are a bit annoyed, but I always did what I felt was correct and United will be proud to have a gold medal winner in the squad.

"Some people say I did the right thing, others say I didn't. But I'm never going to say 'no' to Argentina.

"I deny I have a bad relationship with them [United]. I want to respond to what has happened through my efforts on the pitch. I'm going to show I can shine in the Premiership.

"I can't wait to play for United," he added.

home PL VS liverpool

another solid preformance

My angel Gabriel?

By Brady
Date: 25/11/2004

At last I can get a Lamb song into a title of an article, proud of myself. Mr Heinze has bean here a fair few months now. Most people, as that is what recent experience was telling them, had him down for a bit of a...what shall we say .. a bit like all the midfielders we have at the moment.

That is, we didn't expect much and thought it was another milk cup player in the making. With the Blonde Yonshell he has been a revelation this season. He has probablty been a laviticus aswell.

I have no idea what a laviticus is.

It comes with the sentence that has 'numerous' in it. It might not be even spelt numerous. Religious me loads and that.

I had cheesy beans for my tea the other night. I'd like to say that when I opened the beans it made me think of Gabriel. But it didn't. I was too busy concentrating on making sure that the cheese I had put into the beans was melting perfectly to form that cheesy bean gloop to be poured over my toasted muffins.

Never do a story whilst you're hungry.

Anyway. Gabriel, although somewhat smaller than most people expected from a hardman, has been so, so, so fine this season that he is making me proud when he enters the field.

That is not an emotion I can say with conviction about many of the others at present.

I have one concern about him. Again it is about his size.

But then again, after close observation, I'm not. You see I thought he was small when he first came. Worryingly, despite his fine contributions, he seemed to be getting smaller. After close inspection I find this not to be the case. It is an optickle illusion.

He is not getting smaller he is just wearing bigger shorts and tucking
them in deeper.

Seerz, look at the size of his shorts at the next game. They are easily as big as Scholes and we know what fat manhole covers he wears. When that
windy weather comes he is going to sail into the air for those corners as he utilizes his big panted garments

He will also have to start wearing even bigger ones after west brom and their turkey, stuffing and gravy muffins as Robson has given him the nod to have a few freemans as a thank you to Alex for rescuing his career from managerial oblivion.

Big up. Mmm now beans with the turkey stuffing and gravy might work. Adventurous I know but worth a try.

Never type whilst you're hungry.

Heinze reveals hopes and fears

GABRIEL Heinze has managed to escape the hair-dryer treatment from Sir Alex Ferguson during his fledgling Manchester United career.

But the tough Argentinian will not be reduced to a wreck should the fiery Scot eventually find reason to single him out. For the only thing that truly scares Heinze are aeroplanes.

It is a notable admission from a man who spent the first three months of his time at Old Trafford flying back and forth across the Atlantic on an international odyssey that took in the Copa America, Olympic Games and World Cup qualifiers.

If Heinze had been around when Ferguson learned he would be heading to Athens as an over-age player, the defender might have discovered just how ferocious his manager's temper can be.

At the time, the long-serving United chief suggested Heinze was putting his United career at risk with his prolonged absence. If the move was intended to deter the 26-year-old from his pursuit of an Olympic gold, it did not work.

Instead, the £6.9million summer recruit from Paris St Germain restated his loyalty to the Argentinian cause, collected the medal he craved, then set about proving his value to the Red Devils.

A goal on his debut at Bolton certainly helped and while United's performances have not been as consistent as Ferguson demands, Heinze has established himself as a clear first choice at left-back.

"I haven't had the hair-dryer treatment myself but I have seen one or two things when the games have not been going so well," he said.

"But that's just a normal part of football. I don't find it scary. The only things I am scared of are aeroplanes."

First-team regular

Aside from the Carling Cup encounters with Crewe and Crystal Palace, plus the lunchtime trip to Birmingham when he had not landed back in Britain until late the previous night, Heinze had played in every game since he arrived at Old Trafford in mid-September until Ferguson offered him a breather against Charlton last weekend.

Given Heinze carried on playing throughout the summer after completing his final season in France, Ferguson knows he will have to take the former Newells Old Boys man out of his side at some stage during a demanding English domestic programme.

However, the player himself insists he is ready to carry on for a little while yet.

"As long as my legs will carry me, I am not thinking about having a rest, only about the next game," he said.

"I am very happy here and so far things have gone fine. My team-mates have helped me settle in, which has made it a lot easier for me."

One man who would not make it easy for Heinze if he had to oppose him is Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The prolific Dutchman notched his 36th goal in 37 European appearances for the Old Trafford outfit in Tuesday's 2-1 win over Lyon.

It means that, including his time at PSV, Van Nistelrooy now has 42 Champions League goals to his name - just seven behind Real Madrid legend Raul, who matched Alfredo di Stefano's European Cup record at the Bernabeu yesterday.

"It's almost absurd for me to start talking about Ruud because everyone knows how good he is," said Heinze.

"For me, he is the most complete forward in the world and I do what I can just to try and avoid playing against him in training."

To Fergie and to the fans

Gabriel Heinze has thanked Sir Alex for allowing him a break over Christmas. He is quoted in The Sun as saying, “It’s been a hectic year and I really needed to chill a bit.

“The truth is I didn’t expect to be given the holiday and I’m very thankful to the technical staff and to Ferguson in particular. I’m so appreciative and I want to make a point of being grateful for the gesture. Ferguson has been marvellous to me ever since I arrived and it’s a pleasure to be coached by him.

“I’ve felt comfortable since my first day. I’ve been given everything I needed to do my job well and treated in a first class way.”

He is also going to come home earlier than expected, and is likely to play against Bolton:

“I’ve made the most of my break, basking in the affection of my family, chatting to friends and having barbecues. But I’m a professional and I must turn out for every game the club wants me to — and I’ll play on the 26th without any problems at all.”

Heinze also had praise for United’s supporters. He told UWS, "Can you imagine how I felt as an Argentinian playing in Manchester and hearing the fans singing the name of my country? It's special. I'm not an over the top, emotional guy, but it really touched me. I'm just trying my best to repay the fans by giving everything for my team."

HEINZE THE QUIET MAN

The Times talks to Gabriel Heinze about his life back in Argentina and his hopes for the future.

'A world away from Old Trafford, in the Entre Ríos region of Argentina, a community has been drawn to a standstill. Not that the pace of life is usually too hectic in Crespo, but on this particular day, a week before Christmas, its most famous son has arrived home and its citizens are preparing to throw a fiesta in his honour.

Self-effacing at the best of times, the hero looks sheepish as he emerges from the house of his brother, Hernán, and walks the 300 metres towards the Plaza Sarmiento, where a crowd has gathered. There, standing before the Argentine flag with his loved ones all around him and his Olympic gold medal glimmering in the sunshine, Gabriel Iván Heinze is appointed an ambassador of the town of Crespo.

It is unlikely that this ceremony merits a mention when he is asked, on his return to the Manchester United dressing-room a few days later, how he spent his mid-season break in Argentina. Heinze is not the demonstrative type and, in any case, the significance of the honour might be lost on his team-mates. But to this 26-year-old, an exiled Argentinian trying to make his way in Europe, it meant the world. After a touching tribute to his father, Jorge, who died in April, he told the crowd that this honour was "more beautiful than anything".

It is here, among his people, that Heinze feels at home. "It’s no different to how it has ever been," he said when asked why he so loves the small town where he will return once his playing days are over. "It’s very quiet, very agricultural, pretty much in the middle of the countryside. Everyone knows everyone and they judge me and treat me as a person, not as a footballer."

Recognition has been a long time coming for Heinze, who also had a spell on loan to Sporting Lisbon before joining United from Paris Saint-Germain in a £6.9 million deal on the eve of the European Championship finals last June. Since then it has been non-stop. The only regret is that his father was not around to see it, having died just hours after watching him represent his country against Paraguay last April.

"Because of everything he taught me, my father was and still is one of the most important people in my life," Heinze said. "When he died, I promised to dedicate the rest of my football career to him, because he loved football and he was an excellent father and a great person, someone who had the most important influence on my life. It’s because of him that I have achieved what I have and that I am where I am today."

After a delayed start to his United career, when Sir Alex Ferguson memorably claimed that he would "have a beard" by the time the defender was free of international commitments, Heinze has been a revelation. "He’s been phenomenal," the United manager said. "He’s a complete winner and he believes in defending, which is a rare thing. A lot of defenders are manufactured, they start off as centre forwards or outside rights, but this guy loves defending. South American defenders tend to be like that."

It is an appraisal that draws a hint of a smile. "I don’t like talking about my qualities," Heinze said. "I just try to be humble and work hard. There are players like (Wayne) Rooney and (Fernando) Torres (the Atlético Madrid and Spain forward) who have incredible innate quality and don’t need to spend years climbing the ladder. Other players have to work at their game and I think it’s nice to have that feeling that you have worked and gone through the various stages that I have in my career."

Gabriel Heinze has admitted that Manchester United's support when he opted to represent Argentina at the Olympics, spurred him on when he finally arrived at Old Trafford.

The South American star has had an enormous impact since arriving in The Premiership, quickly winning over the fans with his committed style.
However, Heinze admits that he feared his career with the club would be over before it began when he opted to miss the season's start by playing in the Greece Olympics football competition - and picking up a gold medal.
"I was very calm because I did what I felt I had to do," Heinze told The Mirror.
"But if United had wanted to break my contract I would have accepted the situation because I would have understood their reasons.
"That's what I wanted to prove to Sir Alex [Ferguson], that he was right to wait for me.
"I wanted to put in that extra effort for him because he put all of his trust in me.
"The manager and everyone at the club deserves the best I can give them. Everyone has made me feel really welcome."
