QUOTE:

Essien the fulcrum but grinding Chelsea lack balance

Will Buckley at Stamford Bridge
Sunday November 19, 2006
The Observer

When these two teams met here last season, Chelsea conceded a goal, lost a man and then recovered to win 4-1. It was a performance that pretty much guaranteed them the Premiership. Now, they were less impressive, but they ground out a victory that might have been by a far larger margin. It ensured, with Arsenal faltering, that this year's contest will be a two-horse race.

Before the match, Jose Mourinho had criticised the Chelsea fans for their silence, but the visit of West Ham saw them reinvigorated. This used to be one of the tastier fixtures in days gone by, and memories of past battles made sure the atmosphere was rowdier than of late.

From the off, Arjen Robben threatened down the left. But too often Chelsea appeared cramped. If anything, West Ham were the more fluent with Lee Bowyer forcing Carlo Cudicini to save his cross.
Danny Gabbidon was booked for clipping Didier Drogba just in front of the 'D'. Drogba, Frank Lampard and Geremi stood around the ball and, to great surprise, Geremi stepped forward and curled the ball into the net. 'I was surprised he took the free-kick. I thought they wouldn't give him permission,' said Mourinho.

Andriy Shevchenko and Robben then exchanged a sublime one-two only for the Ukrainian to dither and fail to either shoot or cross. It was symptomatic of his shredded confidence.

There was plenty of bustle and muscle, but little finesse. Chelsea had the edge, but lacked composure and, while things remained topsy-turvy, West Ham were still in with a chance.

Robben pushed forward to leave Chelsea playing 4-3-3, but they continued to lack cohesion, with neither full-back getting forward enough. At the back, there were glitches. Cudicini lacks the presence of Petr Cech and he is liable to make those in front of him nervous.

West Ham, however, did little to take advantage. Bobby Zamora was stranded alone up front as the team concentrated on their defensive duties. When they did get forward they looked dangerous, and Ashley Cole had to be sharp to block an effort from Nigel Reo-Coker.

The second half started with Chelsea's front three continuing to fail to gel. For West Ham, Carlos Tevez continued to bother Ashley Cole and as the minutes passed the visitors' self-belief increased. 'I was buoyed by his performance today,' said West Ham manager Alan Pardew of Tevez. 'He's comfortable to play in four positions.'

Yet Chelsea's threat was never dimmed. Michael Essien hit the base of the post before yet another West Ham player was booked for fouling him. Next a John Terry header went down and then over the bar. And Claude Makelele nearly got his second in consecutive games when he burst through.

As the clock wound down, Chelsea were in almost constant possession, playing their most fluent football of the match. The fulcrum of their play was once again Essien, who decided to showcase his abilities in playing just off Drogba's shoulder.

'We pushed the champions to our absolute maximum,' said Pardew. 'We showed today that this season might not be as long as many people suspected.'

'It was a good game because both teams played with the right attitude,' said Mourinho. 'West Ham are a good team.'

Then he went on to insist many times that they will try their hardest to beat Werder Bremen, even though a tactical defeat might put Barcelona in trouble.

Sunday's title summit has gung-ho Mourinho champing at the bit

Jon Brodkin at Stamford Bridge
Monday November 20, 2006
The Guardian

Managers tend to claim the next match is the only one they are thinking about but Jose Mourinho did not pretend that was the case with the week that lies ahead for Chelsea. Werder Bremen may await on Wednesday but the manager is already eagerly anticipating Sunday's clash of the Premiership's biggest beasts at Old Trafford. "Personally I feel very sorry the next game is Werder Bremen and not Manchester United," he said.

Whereas Chelsea's Champions League progress is all but guaranteed, the domestic situation is less comfortable and a meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson's side is one to get Mourinho's juices flowing: he is not used to second-best and wants normal service to be resumed.
Chelsea were effectively top from start to finish last season and led from early November in Mourinho's first campaign. After watching a lukewarm performance but a deserved win over West Ham he said: "We're second in the Premiership and I want to be first. That's the only thing I'm not totally happy with but we have a chance to go top next Sunday."

Overtaking United looks unlikely then, because Chelsea would need to win by four or more goals, but victory would move them level and send out a huge psychological message. The clubs' last meeting saw Chelsea ease home 3-0 here in April and Mourinho made sure Ferguson knew how comfortable that was by shaking hands before the end. Wayne Rooney broke a metatarsal that day but looks ready to pose a sustained threat to Chelsea, who could sit an unaccustomed six points off the lead this time next week.

"We go to Old Trafford to win," said Mourinho, who lost there last season. "We have to respect their sense of football. If Manchester United beat Chelsea it's not an earthquake, because it's a big team beating a big team."

Chelsea beating West Ham did not even register on the Richter scale. Mourinho's players will need to raise their level in Bremen and Manchester but it felt as though they would have stepped up a gear had West Ham equalised Geremi's nicely curled free-kick. Alan Pardew's side never seriously threatened a goal, though, despite plenty of possession, and Chelsea would have won with greater ease but for Michael Essien being denied by a post and John Terry sending a free header bouncing over in the last 20 minutes.

Essien was Chelsea's best performer once he began to make typically driving runs and astute passes in the second half. There were occasional surges from Arjen Robben and Didier Drogba, who won the decisive free-kick. Frank Lampard had useful moments and Ashley Cole continued to bed in with an aggressive display but overall the team were uninspired.

Despite the Old Trafford trip, Mourinho promised to field a strong team in Bremen. He does not want to be accused of helping the German club at Barcelona's expense and hopes to secure top spot and use youngsters against Levski Sofia. "This game against Bremen can influence the future of the Champions League so we have responsibilities," he said, with Ricardo Carvalho doubtful with an ankle injury. "We need to play a serious game."

West Ham will be aware of the seriousness of their next match, at home to Sheffield United. They were largely sound but lacked quality in their shooting and crossing, with Paul Konchesky's and Matthew Etherington's delivery disappointing, and were short of presence in the box - they had only one central striker for most of the time.

Pardew exaggerated the impact of Carlos Tevez but there were flashes of promise and a high work-rate from the Argentinian. His future and that of Javier Mascherano are uncertain, though. Kia Joorabchian, who effectively controls them and looked into buying West Ham, may seek alternative clubs in January if, as expected, a consortium led by Eggert Magnusson takes control of the club.

Pardew said he felt sorry for Mascherano, kept out by Hayden Mullins and not even on the bench. The midfielder was faultless in his application, he said, but "a bit frustrated" - rather like Mourinho at being behind Manchester United.

West Ham saga ends in takeover

Martyn Ziegler
Tuesday November 21, 2006
The Guardian

West Ham are expected to announce to the Stock Exchange this morning that a takeover bid by an Icelandic consortium has succeeded. The final details of the deal were being completed yesterday in preparation for the announcement of the buy-out for £75m plus an agreement to take on the club's £22.5m debt.

Eggert Magnusson, president of the FA of Iceland, will become the new chairman, although he will have to wait several weeks, while changeover is processed, until he replaces current incumbent, Terry Brown, formally. Once Magnusson is installed he will resign his Icelandic FA post and step down as a member of Uefa's executive committee.

Magnusson, 59, met Brown over the weekend and confirmed that after completing the due diligence on Friday the consortium was preparing a formal offer which will see it buy more than 70% of the shares. The consortium's main backer is the billionaire financier Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson, the chairman of the Icelandic bank Landsbanki.

The takeover should not affect Alan Pardew's position: Magnusson has already met the manager to reassure him of his support and that he will have funds for signings in the January transfer window.

Less secure, however, are the positions of Carlos Tévez and Javier Mascherano, the Argentinians brought to West Ham by the Iranian-born Kia Joorabchian, who then led his own takeover bid but which failed to lead to any offer for the club.

Magnusson said recently: "I have always had a soft spot for West Ham - their trademark for many years was good attacking football, and that's what I like."
