UCL, Zanetti: "A well balanced group"
Thursday, 25 August 2011 20:39:38
MONTE CARLO – "We get to go to Russia quite often, don't we?" began Captain Zanetti as he analysed the Champions League draw in Monte Carlo over the phone speaking to Inter Channel. "Overall we can say that it's a balanced group once again. None of those games will be easy: all our opponents are useful, tricky sides. Obviously we'll try to do well right from the first match and go into each game on form – that's important.
"Lille are the current champions of France," Zanetti continued. "In Turkey there's always a tough atmposphere and going to Russia is no joke either. We're in good shape, though. We've been working to get ready for the start of the league season and if it doesn't go ahead this weekend we'll keep training to make sure we're at our best."
APPIANO GENTILE – "We can expect a tough game, that's for sure." Esteban Cambiasso was the man chosen by Gian Piero Gasperini to speak at the press conference on the eve of Inter v Trabzonspor, and he began by commenting on the Turkish outfit: "I don't know of any team in the Champions League that is easy to play against and, regardless of the previous encounter between Inter and Trabzonspor many years ago [a 2-1 aggregate victory for Inter in the 1983/84 UEFA Cup], they will want to prove they are good enough to compete in the Champions League. We'll have to be very careful, and in particular watch out for their counters when we're on the attack."
Cambiasso was then asked in what frame of mind Inter go into this European fixture after the defeat against Palermo in the league: "We're extremely motivated. A team like ours doesn't get knocked back after losing a game, it looks forward to the next match straight away."
So how does a player react to the criticism? "As a player you just have to let it wash over you. Criticism mustn't affect your mood, you can't be looking around to see who is criticising you, how much and in what way. You just have to concentrate on doing your job," the Nerazzurri midfielder explained.
Talk turned to the 3-man defence, which has come in for a fair amount of criticism in certain quarters: "Sitting here and debating about whether to play 3 or 4 at the back is reductive: there are 10 men who defend in a team. When you analyse a game you can't just look at the formation. I've won playing with a 4-man defence and I've lost with a 4-man defence. Football is much more complicated than that."
When asked yet another question about what changes need to be made in the light of the Palermo defeat, Cambiasso replied; "What is the problem exactly? Because we lost a game? So you lose a game and then you're supposed to change everything from the president right down to the kit men? I really don't get what we're talking about. We lost, ok, but nobody has looked to pass the blame or make excuses. We just need to remain calm: we made some mistakes but we just have to stay calm. Personally I don't see any problem. All that's happened is that we lost a match, and it won't be the last time. It's a false start but let's not make a tragedy out of it. Now we must concentrate on the Champions League and on not making another false start."
Finally, a wish, which is also an invitation to the Nerazzurri faithful: "I hope the Interisti will get behind us at the stadium tomorrow for our first Champions League match. We'll be expecting them."

Inter 0-1 Trabzonspor: chances but no goals
Wednesday, 14 September 2011 23:06:14
MILAN - Inter were beaten 1-0 by Trabzonspor in this evening's 2011/12 UEFA Champions League Matchday 1 tie played at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. After a goalless first half, the Nerazzurri engineered several excellent chances after the restart but couldn't find the net, then Celutska collected the rebound after Altintop had struck the bar (76th minute) and finished to give the Turks victory.
FIRST HALF – For his Champions League debut, Gasperini went with a 4-man defence and handed Pazzini a first European start for Inter up front alongside Zarate and Sneijder. Trabzonspor, who were also making their Champions League bow, were without their coach Gunes (his assistant Unal Karaman replaced him in the dugout), striker Yilmaz and midfielder Mierzejeski, who were all sent off in the Europa League play-off against Athletic Bilbao.
There was little action in the first 15 minutes and the intense heat didn't help matters. Sneijder hit a free kick into the wall (2nd minute) while down the other end a Turkish counter-attack came to an end when Lucio made a decisive challenge on Paulo Henrique (14). The Nerazzurri's first real chance was handed to them on a plate by the Turks in the 18th minute: Zarate surged forward with Pazzini in support but the Argentinian didn't see his team-mate and he was closed down by two defenders as he tried to break through; the ball fell for Obi, whose shot was also blocked by the Turkish rear guard. It wasn't until the 28th minute that the first ball came Julio Cesar's way, but Cech's effort went over. A foul on Sneijder by Kacar gave the Dutchman another opportunity in a promising position but he again shot into the wall. Shortly afterwards Zarate showed what he can do when one on one, tricking his way past a defender with a couple of stepovers and getting his shot on target, only to see Tolga stick out a hand and push it round the post. From the corner the ball fell from the sky for Pazzini, who coordinated himself for a volley on the turn but was unable to connect properly. Inter were the only side attacking at this point. Zarate had another chance when he latched onto a ball over the top but Tolga rushed out to deny the Argentinian a goal (34). That was followed by another Sneijder free kick, which cleared the wall this time but went straight into the keepers' arms (36). On the stroke of half-time Pazzini set up Cambiasso and El Cuchu struck the ball well but off target. Inter looked set to score just before the half-time whistle when Pazzini was put through by Sneijder, but the Italy striker was blown for offside. It was a dubious decision since he seemed to be kept in play by a defender on the near side. After a minute's stoppage time, Johannesson sent the teams into the dressing rooms with the scores even and goalless.
SECOND HALF - The second half began with another free kick for Sneijder following a foul on Pazzini: the Dutch maestro's curled effort skimmed Tolga's right-hand upright. Paulo Henrique tried his luck from distance but got it all wrong, before Inter threatened again through Zanetti, but play was halted by another dubious offside call (53). Gasperini shuffled the pack with a double change after 55 minutes, with Pazzini and Obi making way for Milito and Alvarez. The Prince didn't need long to make an impression: he beat his man for pace and whipped in a low cross from the byline but the ball was too far ahead of Alvarez. Zarate did well to make space for another shot inside the box but aimed too centrally making the keeper's task easy. Perhaps the best chance of the game fell to Milito in the 73rd minute, when he received the ball in front of the keeper. However, he could only fire straight at Trabzonspor's last line of defence, who then collected the ball as it trickled goalwards before anyone else could swoop. Zanetti kept leading by example and his cross found Milito again, whose glancing header went close but over. Like in Palermo, just as Inter were on top, the opposition scored: Altintop's shot came back off the bar but fell to Celutska, who scored as he slid on the turn. Inter went looking for an equaliser and, after Sneijder had won the ball, substitute Coutinho let fly with a shot on the run, but Tolga dived to save and frustrate the Nerazzurri once more. After four minutes of added time, the match ended 0-1.
Inter 1-0 Trabzonspor (HT: 0-0)
Scorers: 31' st Celustka
MILAN - After the match Javier Zanetti commented to Inter Channel: "Football is made up of episodes. Unfortunately we didn't manage to finish, and with only one shot on goal they scored. The only thing to do is put our heads down and work. This is a difficult moment; we've suffered two defeats that we didn't expect and didn't deserve either. The only thing to do is work and concentrate now on Saturday for the Roma match. I hope the fans understand. That way we'll all get out of this together. We all stand together when we win, and we have to do the same thing now. Roma? It is always a difficult challenge, but we'll try to face this match in the best way."
Milito: "We didn't deserve to lose"
Thursday, 15 September 2011 00:11:11
MILAN - A match in which the ball simply did not want to know about going into Tolga's net, not even when it was right at Diego Milito's feet. For Trabzonspor, however, just one shot brought a goal. The Argentine striker explained: "We know that that's how football goes. When you make a mistake in this type of competition you pay for it. This happened today. We had given away little and we let in an incredible goal, but unfortunately that's how it went. Now we have to move forward and look towards Saturday."
Inter received much criticism after Palermo, and there will be even more after today's defeat: "We know that there is criticism in football, especially for us. But we mustn't think about it. We have to look ahead and continue on our path. We have great qualities to do well. Right now the results are not the ones we want, but we are at the beginning and we still have everything in our hands. Will I guarantee for Gasperini? Certainly. We are all convinced that we'll do great things together."
LUCIO 6 – Sempre puntuale nelle diagonali e negli interventi difensivi.
Debutto in Champions a secco.

MOSCOW – "I've been lucky enough to play many times in Russia and against some big teams. They're always very tough games. For example, I remember playing here years ago in the UEFA Cup, when we won 2-1 thanks to Ronaldo. My most recent memory is the Champions League quarter-final in 2010, when Sneijder's goal put us through to the semis." Moscow is the location for Inter's first away trip in the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League and Javier Zanetti was speaking to the media in the press room at the Luzhniki Stadium on the eve of the match against CSKA.
"Tomorrow is a crucial game for us," the captain continued, "because we lost the first one. We hope to do as well as we did in Bologna and start racking up some points so that we can qualify from the group."
The topic switched to Gian Piero Gasperini and his sacking, which it has been said was partly influenced by the players' opinions. "The first thing I want to stress is that we're very sorry about what happened with Gasperini, because I consider him to be a very competent coach, but unfortunately we weren't able to go forward together. You have to accept the criticism but you also have to consider how much of what is said and written is actually true. The only thing that I'd be really sorry about is if the Inter fans let themselves be influenced by all those things."
Zanetti went on to speak about the current coach: "As an opponent I always had great respect for Ranieri; now that he's with us hopefully we'll win things together. We got off to a good start in Bologna and we want to repeat that here tomorrow."
News of Zanetti's appearance record for Inter has reached Russia too, as a local journalist asked if he realises how much he has played. The captain replied: "It is an extraordinary achievement and I think it will only sink in properly once I stop playing, because at the moment I honestly find it hard to believe that I've done so much for the great Nerazzurri family."
Shortly on inter.it you can read what Claudio Ranieri had to say in the pre-match press conference.
CSKA Moscow 2-3 Inter, winning with pride
Tuesday, 27 September 2011 20:35:44
MOSCOW - It was all Inter in the first half as Lucio and Giampaolo Pazzini put them ahead. The second half saw them suffer (because that's what the Champions League is all about) and then they showed their pride as Mauro Zarate scored the winner. Inter, who were 2-0 up after 23 minutes, saw CSKA draw level in the 77th minute, but bounced back to win deservedly, immediately after the disappointment of falling behind. After the win in Bologna, Claudio Ranieri's Inter repeated it in Russia. A great result and a great performance.
FIRST HALF - Ricardo Alvarez played between midfield and the attack comprising of Pazzini and Diego Milito. Inter let CSKA come forward at the beginning as they worked along the wings and were ready to break out of defence at speed. Milito and Pazzini combined to win a corner (after Pazzini's shot was deflected). Alvarez took it and the Nerazzurri went into the lead on 6 minutes as Gabulov didn't intercept before Lucio, at the far post, volleyed home in spite of Ignashevic's half-hearted attempt to clear, resulting in the first goal: 0-1. It was the Brazilian's second of the season after Saturday's goal at Bologna.
Inter were back and it was clear to be seen. Maybe they suffered a little along the wings with their three-man midfield, but they were compact, decisive in their challenging to win back the ball and effective on the break. After 10 minutes Pazzini crossed for Obi from the right and Gabulov worked a miracle to save from the Nigerian. In the 14th minute Milito tried to curl the ball in but unfortunately his shot was central and no problem for the keeper. The Nerazzurri seemed to be controlling the game well but were becoming complacent. After another chance fell to Obi in the 17th minute with a pass from Alvarez, Julio Cesar had his first real test of the match following a clash on the edge of the area between Lucio and Doumbia. CSKA showed their explosive power with Oliseh, technique and finishing skills with Vagner Love and their natural ability to find the net with Doumbia who has been on the scoresheet regularly: and if they find room to move they can be dangerous. But it was Inter who scored the second goal: on 23 minutes Captain Zanetti sped down the right wing, Nagatomo flew in with the ball at his feet to nutmeg Nababkin and handed everything to Pazzini on a platter, and the Italy striker doesn't miss chances like those. Ranieri celebrated the goal with clenched fists: this is the Inter team he likes, solid and effective. The Tuscan striker, just like Lucio, had scored twice in two games: from the Emilian Way to Russia.
After suffering 30 minutes of Inter domination CSKA tried to get back into the match but were foiled by a great save from Julio Cesar, resulting in a corner which Doumbia almost managed to head in. Leonid Slutsky's team took control in the dying minutes and scored 45 seconds into the 47th minute. A free-kick from 20 yards out by Dzagoev which rose and dipped suddenly, passing Lucio and Pazzini in the wall, and catching the Nerazzurri keeper, who had come out to close the gap, off his line.
SECOND HALF - CSKA took up where they had left off: attacking the Nerazzurri defence from the front to make room for their full-backs to overlap, almost rugby-style, and Vagner Love who showed great skill in small spaces. Mamaev had a go after three minutes following two consecutive clearances from corners. Mauro Zarate replaced Pazzini, who had been in pain since the end of the first half. Ten minutes later, it was Zarate who guided Inter back into the goalscoring mode, with a near-post shot that Gabulov blocked. When Inter had the ball, Alvarez controlled well, while Chivu cleared up, organised things and attacked along their left wing continuously. Both teams played in bursts, a shot from Dzagoev on 62 minutes, another from Zarate in the 63rd minute, CSKA tried to push forward and Inter struggled to bring their defence forward.
It was a battle; it was Champions League. There was no time for poetry. Hard and fast, wall-to-wall football. On 68 minutes: a corner and bicycle-kick by Samuel followed by a shot from Alvarez which Gabulov parried, Milito got there a second late, as did Lucio. End-to-end football: Dzagoev attacked on 71 minutes, but Esteban Cambiasso plugged the gap, Ranieri screamed instructions from the touchline, Vagner Love was left free on the right after 77 minutes, Zanetti found himself without Lucio's backing and Julio Cesar watched the ball slip inside the near post: 2-2. But Inter didn't give up. They pulled themselves together and got on with things. Cambiasso (yes, him again) won a ball outside the penalty area, passed to Zarate in the 78th minute and in a split second got away from the defender and shot hard, very hard and accurately to make it 2-3.
Jonathan came on and the formation became 4-4-2, and the clock seemed to slow down, Inter gritting their teeth sending out long balls, CSKA pulled all of their strength together, and Lorenzo Crisetig made his debut replacing a competent, but limping, Chivu. When the final whistle blew the score was 3-2 for us.
CSKA Moscow 2-3 Inter (HT: 1-2)
Scorers: Lucio 6, Pazzini 23, Dzagoev 45+3; Vagner Love 77, Zarate 78.

Julio Cesar: 5.5
He is not there in terms of freekicks this year: the one of Dzagoev was in the center and he did not even see it (like the one of Pinilla). But what a save on that razor sharp shot also from the same Dzagoev.
Nagatomo: 6.5
Took care of two phrases in the game: attentive on Dzagoev when he was floating around on his side and he also made advances. Half of the 2-0 was his as he beat Berezutski between the legs.
Lucio: 7
Was the best player until the equalizer with a fatal hesitation on Vagner Love. But he should be forgiven because other than two goals in four days, he is a totem at the back: got all the balls, gave courage and being the wall of the defense.
Samuel: 5.5
Did well fighting with Doumbia. Slipped in more trouble when it comes to dealing with Vagner Love. And also Olisen: that was not how to give the freekick in front of the goal which was the 2-1.
Chivu: 6.5
Only one major mistake in a game where he was huge in the defensive end and Oliseh was not easy to deal with. Also a contributor offensively.
Zanetti: 6
Il Tractor in a diamond midfield is not as powerful as before but knew how to administer and help out (Nagatomo on Dzagoev for example). But did not help out Lucio on Vagner Love.
Obi: 6
Close to sufficiency. Because sometimes he still sins of naivety and when Oliseh turned on the engine, he often fell behind. Almost a goal from header in the first half.
Alvarez: 6
If he was a bit more useful, he would have more than a 6. But the impression is that he will be more useful. The quality is there also even some sacrifices (some tackles).
Pazzini: 6.5
How can you not play someone is like? A total striker who almost had assist to Obi but when there is the need to score, he is there. First "true" goal in the Champions League.
Milito: 6
Another man who ate the bread of sacrifice without a murmur. From a nightmare for the defenses to defender in the final minutes. But he had a few playable balls and did much dirty work.
Zarate: 7
Decisive by scoring a beautiful goal as huge as a boulder.
Jonathan: N/A
Ten minutes of giving freshness to gall, to rescue those who had given a lot and were no longer fresh.
Crisetig: N/A
The game died as he defended the ball from three opponents.
Cambiasso: 7
Did not suffer heavy legs like the other night. Did not send in his cousin instead of him. A dam at the back with his radar open. Zarate is very thankful.
Ranieri: 7
Had the strength of not inventing anything because he did not have time. He restored security and conviction with simple and concrete ideas such as the entry of Zarate.

Cambiasso: "An important win"
Tuesday, 27 September 2011 22:03:41
MOSCOW - After the match, Esteban Cambiasso spoke about the CSKA game and also reflected on the Nerazzurri's start to the season: "We got off to a bad start but there weren't actually many games where we got it all wrong. Big teams sometimes need a little time to adjust and consolidate. As for tonight's match, if we had taken a 2-0 lead into the dressing room at half time, the match would have unfolded very differently - perhaps we would have scored another goal and been able to see it out without any problems. That's not the way it went but we had a great response."
Next weekend's clash with Napoli is already on the horizon but Cambiasso preferred to enjoy the Moscow moment a little longer: "I don't want to think about Napoli now, even though it's a crunch match. For now I just want to enjoy this win. It's an important victory."
UCL, Inter 2-1 Lille: Nerazzurri top of Group B Wednesday, 02 November 2011 23:00:05
permalink MILAN - After the 1-0 win in France, Inter overcame Lille once more in Matchday 4 of the
UEFA Champions League, this time at the Stadio Meazza and by two goals to one.
Walter Samuel was back on the pitch and also back on the score sheet with his first goal in Europe in
two years, rising above everyone else to power home a header and put Inter in front after 18 minutes.
Milito could have made it two soon after the restart but messed up his finish to the astonishment of the
Meazza faithful, who nonetheless continued to cheer him on. The fans' support was a big help for El
Principe and he did make it 2-0 in the 65th minute following a storming run by captain Zanetti, who was
outstanding tonight. A mistake by the Nerazzurri defence let in De Melo seven minutes from time for what
proved to be a consolation goal only.
FIRST HALF – Ranieri had Samuel and Thiago Motta available again to face Lille and up front opted for a
pairing of Milito and Zarate. Lille, without Basa and Balmont, stuck with their attacking trio of Cole,
Sox and Hazard.
There was merely a minute and 40 seconds on the clock when Milito was denied a goal by the woodwork:
collecting Chivu's long ball from inside Inter's half, El Principe found himself with just Landreau to
beat and flicked the ball over the keeper's head with the outside of his right boot, only to see it come
back off the woodwork. Zarate went down in the box following a challenge by Rozenhal in the 5th minute
but replays showed Stark was right to let play continue as the Czech midfielder played the ball. Zarate
tried again on 8 minutes with a low right-footed drive that failed to trouble the French keeper, while
Pedretti had a go down the other end (9 minutes): wide. Samuel's foul on Jelen on 13 minutes gave Hazard
a chance for a shot on goal, but the ball went behind for a corner following a defensive block by
Cambiasso's face. Sow threatened at the far post 17 minutes in: captain Zanetti was well placed to deny
him a shot on goal. It seemed Zarate had broken the deadlock a minute later, his powerful effort taking
a fortunate deflection off the underside of Landreau and trickling wide. Sneijder whipped in the ensuing
corner and Samuel leapt above the crowd - towering over Mavuba - to head home and put the Nerazzurri 1-0
up. Hazard went looking for an equaliser in the 25th minute but was thwarted as Castellazzi dived to
punch clear. Zarate then had two opportunities around the 40-minute mark with Cambiasso the inspirer:
Landreau saved the first with no real difficulty then rushed out to beat the forward to a dangerous
ball. As half time approached, Jelen found himself with a clear chance: Castellazzi saved and the Meazza
breathed a sigh of relief. After a minute's added time, the sides went in with Inter a goal to the good.
SECOND HALF – The teams started the second half with only one change: De Melo in place of Jelen. In the
48th minute Sneijder won a free-kick. He then took it and found Stankovic who nodded an easy ball down
for Milito, but the Prince from five yards out in front of an open goal managed to send the ball over
the crossbar. Nobody could believe it; Milito himself couldn't believe it, but he received the full
support of the Stadio Meazza and of his team-mates. Rozehnal caused a few hearts to flutter as he hit a
rebound from a free kick, but the shot went well over the bar (54th minute). Javier Zanetti was showing
all of his leadership qualities in this match: providing a barrier in every single part of the field,
running relentlessly and then providing the cross for Milito to put the Nerazzurri 2-0 up on 65 minutes,
as he met the assist from the captain on the right wing to side-foot the ball into the net. The fans
applauded the Prince; but, after thanking Zanetti, with a tear in his eye, it was the Prince who thanked
all of his fans. In the 72nd minute Hazard took an inch-perfect free kick which Castellazzi dived to
punch away for a corner. At the other end Alvarez received a pass from Zarate, dribbled past two
defenders and saw his shot fly inches over the bar (73rd minute). The 79th minute saw Pazzini come on in
place of Zarate, but it was Lille who pulled a goal back on 83 minutes: after a mix-up between Stankovic
and Lucio on the edge of the area, De Melo found himself with a relatively simple tap-in to beat
Castellazzi. When Milito came off in the 90th minute, to be substituted by Obi, he received a standing
ovation.
The other match in Group B between Trabzonspor and CSKA Moscow ended scoreless. The Nerazzurri now top
the group with 9 points: their next match will be on 22 November in Turkey.

Zanetti: "Happy for Diego - he needed that goal"
Thursday, 03 November 2011 01:15:12
permalink MILAN - "It went well for us tonight and I'm especially happy for Diego - he needed that
goal. He's like a brother to me and setting up his goal was like scoring myself." You could see the joy
in Javier Zanetti's eyes after a goal that gave Inter their smile back - and especially Diego Milito,
who crowned the Nerazzurri's win against Lille with his goal. "Strikers get periods like this," the
captain explained to Inter Channel. "Periods when you do everything right and others when you can't do
anything properly, but Diego is working so hard for the team, he makes sacrifices and he deserved this
goal. I want to thank the fans for getting behind him because they are always with us. Today's was an
important win to respond to the Juventus defeat. It allows us to work with a little bit less pressure."
There was also a goal for Walter Samuel this evening - another goal that had been a while coming: "He
hadn't scored for ages either and I'm really pleased for him. We all know what an important player he
is."
The captain ended by talking about the Champions League and how things could turn out this year: "All
the big sides are doing well. It will be a very well balanced competition. Do we believe we can do it?
You have to believe you can, and look to improve every day. But the Champions League is such a strange
competition that you have to see how each team is set come February, when it's make or break."
TRABZON - "We will find ourselves facing a strong opponent, Trabzonspor. It's a heated atmosphere. We have experience from the first leg, a complicated match that we lost due to an incident. The first objective is qualification, and the second is first place in the group." After Claudio Ranieri it was Javier Zanetti to talk about the game that awaits Inter tomorrow evening at the Hüseyin Avni Aker Stadium, against the same opponent that did not give the Nerazzurri captain and his team-mates the greatest of starts in the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League. However, they are ready to bounce back.
